Kalama’s gaze shifted to the unfamilar face smiling at her. “Much longer than can be deemed normal.” She huffed, annoyed with the unwelome attention. The hellhound was wary of kindess from strangers, but the girl seemed harmless enough. “Thank you, for that.” She said slowly, nodding her head in the direction of the dejected boy. 

“What’s wrong with these guys?” Sol rolled her eyes and sat back into her seat as she flipped through her textbook. The Professor was late, once again but not only had she grown used to it, but she was enjoying the time to herself at the beginning of class. “oh it’s my pleasure. Anything to kick these guys down a few notches. I’m Soledad by the way. Welcome to potions 101.”

MAL: HEY

MAL: Did you get the notes from class yesterday?

Sol: HEY

Sol: Sure did! Want them?

 “Do you have a purpose, or are you just going to hover?” Kalama sharply questioned the figure standing over her. The dark haired girl had been rather focused on the reading for one of her new classes and did not appreciated being interrupted, which explained her acrid tone.

Soledad napped her fingers and motioned towards the seat farthest away from the girl. The boy that had been standing over her groaned and went to take a seat. She grinned, leaning back in her chair and flashed a wink at the girl. “How long was he standing there for? Jesus.”

     “Didn’t curiosity kill the cat or something like that?” Ugh! If only he could remember the saying. Surface dwellers had the strangest phrases. They were so hard to remember, especially for someone who preferred to spend their time under the waves and not above them. “Stories such as?” He questioned, wondering just how much the princess had revealed to this woman. “Lovely doesn’t even begin to describe it. We prefer to keep it that way. The fewer people that believe, the fewer people that will go searching for it. It isn’t the lost city for no reason. “Someone thought it was funny to throw you in a pool, despite you not knowing how to swim? I’m surprised you didn’t learn just from that.” As they continued walking, Caspian wondered where the female had been stuck. A cave? A dungeon? The merman’s curiosity took over and he had to ask. “If you don’t mind my asking, where did you get stuck?” Letting out a deep sigh, the male stopped in his tracks. “I don’t know how much Sirena has told you but she had duties in Atlantis.”

“Yeah…Curiosity killed the cat but I really happen to like Sirena so I’m just trying to get to know her.” She could tell her was very protective of her new friend and Soledad found herself wondering more about them. “She told me her father sent her to the surface to learn more about it and when he heard about the university catering to powered folks, well…he jumped on the idea. I don’t know much but from what I know, it seems like she really loved everyone in Atlantis.” She nodded. “I understand how it would be better if not everyone knew about Atlantis. Wouldn’t want the wrong people there.” Soledad walked beside him, smiling at some classmates. “Well, it’s what scared me off but hopefully, I’ll learn soon. Um…well, I was…sick.” She left it at that and stopped as well. “Duties?” Soledad pointed towards the dorms. That door. It’s mine and hers but I think she’s out getting her schedule in check.”

     Caspian smiled bigger than he had since learning of Sirena’s disappearance and leaving his home. Instead of the small bit of relief the male had felt earlier, a wave fell over him this time. She was safe and she was here. “Thank you,” he said with that same smile plastered to his features. The merman ran his thumb along his fingertips impatiently. It was his only anxious tic. “Can we go now? Atlantis?” Sorrow tainted the last word as he nodded. “Yes. I’m a merman, not a mermaid. Sirena is a mermaid. Why?” Caspian had never understood the surface world’s obsession with mermaids. From their books to their pop culture - half of it was false information. None of them actually knew very much about mermaids and merman at all. “Swimming isn’t hard. Walking is hard. I’m sure the pr-I mean, I’m sure Sirena would love to teach you how to swim. She’s the second best swimmer I know.” Shrugging the male replied, “Unfortunately the culture isn’t very shocking. Sirena is a big fan on the surface world. Let’s go.” He wondered why the female seemed to need to clarify about the living situation. Caspian had known what she was trying to say immediately. “It’s okay,” he said, following closely behind her. Trying to keep balance was his biggest struggle as they made their way to towards the dorms. “It’s okay I guess. I’m just here to get Sirena and go.”

“A Merman. Of course.” She wanted to learn everything she could. How exciting to have two Atlantians at her school! She didn’t want him to feel awkward around her and like Sirena, he was so proper. “I’m just curious. I’ve heard so many stories from Sirena. I bet it’s lovely. Most people don’t even think it exists.” She spoke as they walked together. “I had a friend that thought it was funny to throw me in a pool when I was a little girl and then I got stuck in a place I couldn’t do much of anything but I’m determined to learn. I’ll absolutely ask Sirena.” Soledad then looked over her shoulder. “Go? As in you’re taking her back? W--why?”

     “By Posiden’s Trident! Can you lead the way?” He questioned quickly, the words pouring from his lips as fast as his tongue could produce them. Sirena was his focus. Sirena was always his focus. As her personal guard, he should have known she was going to leave. He should have been prepared. It killed the merman a little inside that he hadn’t seen it coming and now he would actually be killed if he went back to Atlantis without the princess. Noticing the starfish on the woman’s ears, he paused, taking a deep breath. A small part of him felt relief from seeing them. They were familiar. The princess’s favorite earrings. “Her boyfriend? No.” Pausing once more, Caspian wondered how much this stranger actually knew about Sirena. It was probably safer not to let this woman know that he was her guard, so instead, he opted to let her know about their friendship. “I’m Sirena’s best friend actually. Okay, Sol it is then. I’m Caspian.”

“Sure! I’m done with classes for the day so I can absolutely do that!” She wondered who he was. He seemed desperate to see Sirena and he seemed genuine enough which meant he wasn’t some creep she was trying to avoid. When he said he wasn’t her boyfriend, she nodded and he smile widened even more upon learning he was her best friend. How nice to have someone else from Atlantis. “So you are also from...” She bit her lip in excitement. “Atlantis? I’ve always loved mermaids. I wanted to visit them but I never really learned how to swim. Didn’t really get out much before...well, now.” She held out her hand for the guy. “Caspian. This must be a culture shock for you. Come on, I’ll take you to my room. Well, our room. Not yours and mine. Mine and Sirena’s.” She shook her head and grinned. I promise I’m usually more articulate than this!” She lead the way towards the dorms and kept close to the boy. “How do you like this town?”

     Moving his head to glance at the guys of which the female was speaking, the terror was clear on their faces. What had she done to them? The males had all but soiled themselves. “It’s fine,” turning to walk away, Caspian expected the conversation to be over. There was nothing more to say, especially not when he was on a mission. The entire reason the merman had left Atlantis was to come to find his best friend. Sirena had left without a word to him. It was then that the other spoke again, catching Caspian’s attention. Looking back at her, he sighed to himself. “I am. Sirena? Does she happen to have lilac hair?” Ignoring everything else the female had said, he turned his body to face her once again.

Soledad frowned slightly when the guy started walking away from the conversation. So moody. When he turned to look at her however, Sol perked up and flashed him a friendly smile. Maybe if she showed him she was harmless and welcoming, he would shed some of that broodiness. At the mention of Sirena and when she noticed how quickly it had caught his attention, she smirked. Sirena didn’t mention having a boyfriend! “Yes! That’s her!” She tucked a strand of hair behind her ear and showed off the tiny starfish studs. “She gave me these a few days ago. Well, she let me borrow them. Are you her boyfriend?”Sol had a way of being way too blunt. “I’m Soledad by the way but you can call me, Sol.”

     Eyes plastered to the floor and his feet below him, Caspian ignored the world around him. The only thing he focused on was keeping balance. Legs were much harder to use than a tail. Becoming lost in his thoughts and balancing, it wasn’t long until the merman had run into someone. Quickly trying to regain balance, the male was sure he looked just as he felt - like a fish out of water. When he was comfortable again and sure that he wasn’t going to fall over, Caspian looked over at the person he had bumped into. “I’m fine, are you alright?” The sentence was sweet and short just like he liked to keep his interactions with everyone outside of Atlantians.

“Yeah! I’m sorry! Those guys over there had my attention…” Soledad was just getting used to real people school or whatever you wanted to call this. She hadn’t attended a real school since her freshman year in high school before she turned and now that she was released from crazy town, she was free to do whatever she wanted. It was weird but also nice. Going to school with others like her was probably too good to be true. What was the catch? She offered the guy a smile. “Are you new? I’m new too. I have absolutely no idea what I’m doing. You kinda have that look. No offense. You can join me and my friend Sirena in the ‘we have no idea what we’re doing here but we look hot doing it’ club.”

“Excuse me! Hi! My brother is president of the student body so I assure you he will not appreciate you treating this beautiful fellow student this way. Now carry on before I bite your ear off!” She smiled and waved off the bully, turning around to go about her way and gasping when she walked into someone. “Oof! I’m so sorry. Are you alright?”
