Diversity Is Not A Trending Topic
Diversity Is Not A Trending Topic
I originally wrote this post for chelseakrost.com and I wanted to share it here.
“Diversity is not a trending topic.” These were the words spoken by Viola Davis backstage at her post award win presser during the SAG awards. It may seem like diversity is the current buzzword but it is something that many industries have been battling for quite some time. Being Black and a millennial in the…

16th Annual Dream Builders’ Bash
I love supporting a good cause. I recently attended the 16th Annual Dream Builders’ Bash put on by Homeless Solutions. The event was held at The Westin Governor Morris in Morristown. The Dream Builders’ Bash is the premier fundraising event for Homeless Solutions. It also serves as an awards presentation. This year the event honored Dr. Elizabeth S. Hall, former HSI CEO as well as Alex, Tyler,…

Joining a Pro Black Organization: Representation Matters #BHM #BlackHistoryMonth
Since Black people were brought over to America as slaves we have been looking for ways to bond with one another. Be it from learning another tribe’s language so that we could communicate with one another or sharing stories of survival, Black people have a way of sticking together. Having a shared struggle has a way of doing that.
Focusing on the idea of sticking together, I wanted to highlight…

Imagine getting to show your collection for the first time during New York Fashion Week! Well that;s exactly what happened to five young designers who took part in the White Label Collective mentorship program by AXE. The mentors for the program included Esquire‘s Nick Sullivan, legendary menswear designer Billy Reid and Grammy-winning musician John Legend .
The five designers showcasing their collections were
Whipping Post – beautiful leather wear and goods by Atlanta native Ryan Barr
Exercise Your State Of Mind or EYSOM for short – fashionable workout gear by Stanley Cheung
ATELIERSAVAS by Savannah Yarborough
Oberima Afriyie – vintage inspired menswear by Afriyie Poku
1K headgear by Kristopher Haigh’s
I love the diversity in the designers chosen. Each designer offered varying styles that you wanted to include in your closet.
Check photos from the collection below. What pieces do you love the most?

Culture: Soup Joumou a Haitian Independence Day Staple
Fourth of July has Bar-B- Que, Thanksgiving has turkey and Haitian Independence day has soup joumou. The people of Haiti got their independence on January 1st, 1804. The first free black republic. That sounds like a reason to celebrate and that’s just want the Haitian people did. That first day of independence was marked by celebration soup, soup joumou which is a pumpkin based soup. Think of it…

Innocently taking a selfie at The Menil Collection in Houston almost got be kicked out but it reminded me that I need to pay attention to the writing on the wall.
Had I paid attention, I would have seen the signs that said no photos inside the museum. What can I say, I wanted a photo-op. My bad.
This summer, I gifted myself a trip to Houston,Texas. This was also my first solo trip. I spent 5 days and 4 nights in Houston. I stayed in the Montrose section of Houston which is a very residential area but close enough to a number of must see Houston attractions. I spent my mornings sightseeing. I went to the Hermann Park, Discovery Green, NRG Stadium. I made sure to keep my water bottle with me, temperatures hit triple digits while I was on vacation. I also used my days to hit the beach, try the food and shop. The favorite food stops had to be PappaDeux and Pappas. Pappas is a family owned restaurant chain. There is Pappadeaux Seafood Kitchen for fresh seafood and Louisiana-style favorites; Pappasito’s Cantina for legendary Tex-Mex; Pappas Bar-B-Q for the best slow-smoked, pit barbeque around; Pappas Bros. Steakhouse for prime, dry-aged steaks in an exquisite, fine dining environment; Pappas Burger for a mouthwatering, Texas-sized, prime beef burgers; Yia Yia Mary’s Greek Kitchen for unique, flavorful cuisine from the Mediterranean; Pappas Seafood House for the freshest Gulf Coast seafood around; and Dot Coffee Shop for comfort food 24 hours a day. I went to the one near NRG stadium, (where the Houston Texans play). Since this was the most popular one, there were a good number of customer when I went and the atmosphere was great. The added bonus of my visit food wise was since I’m already a fan on Tex-Mex food and tequila the regional food was right up my alley. My nights were spent locating and experiencing the nightlife of Houston. I also took the opportunity to take nighttime dips in the pool.
Being that this was a solo trip. I made sure to take the necessary precautions. I did rent a car. I scoped out areas before traveling. I let people back home know where I was going. To have the best time as possible, I did reach out to friends in the area for suggestions on places to visit. I used apps, like Foursquare, Yelp, Twitter & instagram to find popular places and check out local specials. I feel like staying in a residential area allowed me to blend in and really get a feel for the area.
My trip highlights:
Kayacking at Discovery Green
Traveling to the City of La Porte to go to Sylvan Beach Park
Rooftop party at Proof even with the line holding that they do
Brunch at El Real and Rivas
Being the Jersey girl that I am, loved browsing the Galleria Mall. That place is HUGE.

Season’s Greeting! The weather in New Jersey isn’t too frightful and I couldn’t be happier. Besides summer, holiday party season is my favorite time of the year. Getting dressed up, mixing and mingling, holiday decorations, speciality treats I love it all.

Happy National Pumpkin Day
Happy National Pumpkin Day
I love food holidays. It allows you to rant and rave about your love of a particular food without being chastised. It also allows you the opportunity to overindulge. Food holidays are also great to see how others incorporate certain foods into their meals. I’m always up to finding out more ways to eat pumpkin.
Enjoying pumpkin during the autumn months is most, for any food lover. Autumn isn’t…
