Storyscape: A Retrospective

Today is a bittersweet day for me and the thousands of Storyscape fans that app that know and love is permanently deleted. If you would allow me, I want to look back on our short but brief time with this app. I made a multiple write ups for this entry. It is hard to grasp that the app will cease to exist. I cannot fathom that possibility. If you would allow me a moment to remember my time with Storyscape.

I first learned about this incredible app when I was disillusioned with direction that another app was having, (coughs) Choices (coughs). Excuse me, I had to clear my throat. I fought out on Reddit. I was eagerly anticipating the release of it. It was still in beta. Chopping at the bit to see what everyone was raving about.

On October 22, 2019, Storyscape released worldwide. I was excited. A lot of people were excited. 

The stories on the app were made for a mature audience in mind. I appreciated that. Other apps were homogenized compare to this with pandering to cutesy stories about weddings and pregnancies. The characters had depth and complexity. The art was unparalleled. It was moving seeing the characters coming to life on my phone screen. The transitional backgrounds were a feast to behold.

Your choices as the gamer affected the journey for the characters in positive or negative ways like a Telltale game.

The one major thing that the writers excelled with it the representation of people within LGBTQIA+ umbrella. I want to thank them for being inclusive without putting into a token minority in the story. One of their cancelled series, Ageless was going to have a non-binary customization option for the MC. That would have been amazing.

When the news broke last month that Disney sold Foxnext to Scopely not have Fogbank in the deal devastated the community on Tumblr, Reddit, Facebook and Twitter. People were outraged. People were sad that the characters that they knew and loved for those three short months will cease to exist.

My heart goes out to the sixty employees that were affected by these series of events. If you are reading, know that the fandom will never die. We will carry on. We will follow you to your next destination whatever that maybe. Know that you created something very special that touched a lot of people. That is something we will carry with us.

storyscape is closing today. i have to reiterate my heartbreak for the app and the incredible team behind every story.

i want to take a second to talk about titanic which is, to this day, one of the best stories i’ve ever played. every character mattered. every interaction had meaning. there was no moment that was written without purpose and intention behind it. 

adele was a brilliant and strong mc who i will miss dearly. her bravery and taste for adventure were inspiring.

matteo was a sharp yet caring counterpart to her; he brought out the shrewd and witty side of adele. his quips and warm gazes won’t be forgotten. 

charlie showcased the beauty of innocence and selflessness and brought out the curious and bright side of adele. his compassion and benevolence won’t be forgotten.

zetta showed the power of vulnerability and rediscovery of self. she brought out a gentleness in adele. her perceptiveness and warm heart won’t be forgotten.

thank you to storyscape for sharing such beautiful, touching stories for as long as you did. thank you, truly.
