                         IT DOESN’T SEEM to process at first. she listens but doesn’t hear. and then ------ and then it dawns on her that he said decades not DAYS and she’s deliberately jamming her chakra into a tender spot while her other hand soothes. it shouldn’t hurt too bad and that chakra point had needed cleared, but she certainly COULD be more gentle about it. she’s the same AGE as him, at least roughly, and her eyes narrow as she looks back up at him.      ( this place is so strange in it’s own ways. with it’s relative peace and the fact that skill like his could bloom and flourish without such a weakness costing him. she’d been travelling long enough now that its stark contrasts do nothing but startle her still. )

             “ you NEED to tell me if there’s anything else you’ve been hiding since childhood. if not i’ll tell tsunade-sama that one of her nin is a fool. ”     she scoffs softly, and her fingers work to sooth again, massaging her chakra back in to ease pain and gently restore battered muscle. this time of damage is familiar to her. she’d seen it in her homeland, even. her head shakes as she eases the wind of damaged tissue and her energy ebbs deeper against his.      “ i won’t. not really. but please tell me if there’s anything else, hatake-san. you don’t need to hurt and neglecting old injuries isn’t any sort of penance at all. ”

               he can’t put into words how much he hates this. there’s too much lightness on his shoulders – it feels awkward; the lack of weight to hold him down makes him feel as if he’s drifting, there’s no getting comfortable. it’s not just the pain, or the fluid that constantly wets the bandages surrounding his marred skin – just the lack of what was once there. stumps of bone and flesh still stick out from his back, and the doctors had made it clear that they’re unsure if feathers will ever regrow from them. he tries not to think about that; tries not to consider that he may not heal from this. that he might be grounded now. 

                 ‘ alright, sounds like a plan, doc. ’ there’s something ragged and pained in his voice. his throat had been littered with ulcers from the smoke and shouting – he still feels an ache every time he swallows, a stinging in every breath. her prompting commands his arm to move – lifting above his head and his face; all scared and war-torn; contorts with the discomfort of the action. a hiss escapes his lips and he feels he has to pause – even with her quirk it feels so wrong to move; like he has the sensation of ever muscle and tendon stretching and adjusting for where wings should be. ‘ fuck – i hate this. ’ he mutters, good eye squeezing shut. 

            she softens to him then, letting the worst of her ragged edges give way as she nods from above. his stilted movement lets her guide her hand back, below stump of bone. here, the burns seem worse but the muscle is too. settling on top of a damp patch of skin and trying not to balk as cream and fluid give way below even the gentlest touch. she doesn’t HAVE a hero’s constitution, but she has a doctors, and it’s enough to keep her face still.     “ it’s okay, you’re allowed to be upset. i can’t imagine what this must be like for you. ”

            “ enji-san asked after you today, ”       she says, soft and idle and, she’ll admit --- there’s the vaguest hope that it’ll lift the boy’s spirits.       ( he’s not much younger than she is but there’s still a twist in her stomach when she causes him to hurt that’s normally tied to children and civilians. )        “ i said you were hitting on the nurses. it seemed --- i don’t know, he nearly laughed, and by that i do mean the huff he does? but not the annoyed one. ”

naruto verse: 

welcome to tall lesbian hell: prepare to die edition. mai is from a family of wealthy, non-nin doctors from the land of iron. mai grew up knowing that ninjas existed, and that there were occasionally talks held by ninja using the land of iron as a neutral grounds for conflict resolution. she didn’t have an opinion on the ninja “way” other than believing that it must inherently cause strife given the amount of conflict that seemed to exist beyond the mountains.

medical technique in the land of iron was very different from technique elsewhere. mai’s family were particularly adept because they’d learned to ‘stretch their senses’ and use that to try and guide them in their healing. this was a rudimentary form of chakra channeling that allowed the hayashi to use spiritual connection to diagnose.

in the land of iron mai and her elder brother inherited their father’s position as head of a major clinic upon his death where she did everything from tending wounded soldiers to helping the ill to surgeries. she did treat a small number of nin but their view of her methods as strange or antiquated   ( rather than just different, which is all she saw them as )   made it difficult for her to connect with them.

her first point of interest with ninja was meeting a female medical nin who’s been brought by a group to help mediate. mai and this female nin shared interest in each other’s ways of healing and shared theoretical knowledge before finding the common thread of chakra use, although in different ways. mai taught this doctor how to use the more spiritually-oriented channeling that was common in the land of iron and in return she was taught how to make a chakra scalpel and the basic hand signs for some of the smallest medical jutsu.

downside: she was good at it and when she’s good at something she wants to excel. but ninjutsu was pretty soundly forbidden in the land of iron and if she wanted to learn any more she would have to leave to seek the knowledge out in bits and pieces. so, after consideration and with knowledge that a wider world was out there, mai left the land of iron.

she’s really tired. taking clients past a certain point in the evening meant any stress that came during that appointment went home with her.    ------   so that’s the air that she carries, TIRED and ready to sink into the couch with a glass of coke in a wine glass with jack to taste.

                what mai FORGETS about though is the immediate invigorating presence of the small redhead that makes her nights more interesting and days worth slogging through. when kayda comes to her on tip-toes mai smiles down, a hand moving to the small of her back as the other finds the side of her neck. mai’s touch alone is enough to make someone melt, not via heat but the loosening of muscles, the melting away of tension.

                          her lips linger against kayda’s and the hand at the small of her back goes to stroke below her shirt and on the tanned, freckled skin below. when she pulls away, she pushes her forehead to kayda’s, her eyes closed.

                                    “ how did you know just what i needed? ”

                   they’d cleaned him up and grafted the worst areas where the burns had melted skin and tissue to give way to exposed muscle and sinew; they’d done the best they could with medical science for him. and yet he still couldn’t stand – could barely move. the stumps of bone sticking out of his shoulder blades are a grotesque reminder of where wings should be, the muscle surrounding his shoulder now atrophied with lack of use and burn damage. 

                    ‘ my shoulder blades. ’ he mutters, face half pressed into the pillow and peering up at her through damaged left eye where vision blurs. ‘ my whole upper back ‘n neck, really. hurts like a bitch. ’

                           “ ALRIGHT, ”        at first that’s all he gets from the quiet doctor. she’s just eyeing it, trying to decide the best method of approach when all of it risks HURTING hawks even more. she pushes her tongue into the inside of her cheek.       “ you aren’t my first burn patient. we can get through this. ”       deliberate choice. not victim. medical language had been moving away from the use of the term but she’d never really used it to begin with. heroes made choices and got hurt as a result. she doesn’t know the exceptions to the rule.

                  “ the worst of it will be working the muscle itself. i can REDUCE the level of pain, but we’ll have to practice using this area again, and that’s going to hurt. ”           gloved hands settle gently on burnt skin and she channels her energy into marred flesh. the kinks, the places where it’s knit together WRONG and tension has wound atrophied muscle tight ------ those are the spots she can soothe. the purple-blue of her eyes settle where bone twists outside skin, letting out a thin breath.       “ it may still feel wrong, hawks-san, but please try moving your shoulder. ”

                THEY DON’T ------ NORMALLY give her KIDS to work with.  she doesn’t have anything against them, she’s just nearly thirty and over six foot tall, she’s not the best at relating to them on their level and what she remembers from her pediatrics rotation? SUPER important. mai smiles as she bridges the distance and hovers beside the edge of the bed.

              “ hello eri. i’m dr. mai. i’m the kind of doctor they call in when something is hurting in your arms and legs ------ or any of your muscles. how are you doing today? ”          she gives her best smile, soft still, and shifts on her feet.
