End of Term Report #6
Hey, hope you had nice Christmases and also have nice New Year’s Eveseses. In self-imposed tradition, here’s a top five albums list from each Skeleton and a photo from the work Christmas do.
Cool cool cool.
James
Moon Tooth - Chromaparagon Like a blues-rocky version of Protest the Hero back when Protest the Hero were good. Can imagine that a lot of people will be put off because they don’t like the singer’s voice, but I like it so there.
Black Peaks - Statues Thought I’d put this lot’s EP off of when they were called Shrine in one of my previous top-5s, but apparently I didn’t. Probably because I’m not a hipster like that Aidan. Anyway, more of the same goodness from the newly christened Peaks. First thought it wasn’t a patch on the old EP, but then I realised it was great.
The Rocket Summer - Zoetic A great return-to-form after Bryce Avary’s middle of the road last couple of efforts. He’s kind of gone a bit electronic which perhaps explains the renewed bite of the songs.
Into It. Over It. - Standards Well, it’s not as good as Intersections, but this is still a great slice of American Indie, or whatever you call this genre of music.
All Get Out - Nobody Like a Quitter Ok I haven’t actually listened to this album yet as Simon has just pointed out that I somehow missed that it was released at the end of October, but I basically love everything they do so I’m going to assume it’s amazing. At least better than the two albums that were fighting for 5th place - the Biffy Clyro and Blink 182 albums - which themselves were both good returns to form. Also, the fact I’ve named an album I haven’t listened to and also given honourable mentions to two other albums at the same time will really annoy Simon and Aidan. Especially Simon.
Finally, a bonus one-to-watch-for mention: a rapper from Salem, Massachusetts called Token. He’s 18 now, but even the songs he was recording when he was 15 are just amazing.

Aidan
Ordered by most recently released, because why not:
Sims - More Than Ever. Just edges Astronautalis to win my favourite white boy rap album of 2016 award as my devotion to Minnesota based hipster hip hop continues for a fourth year.
How To Dress Well - Care. Listened to this more than any other album this year. Proggy pop/r’n’b stuff with some beautiful lovelorn melodies and his most direct effort thus far. Thought was pap on first listen but now love it. Second hipster thing on my list.
Bon Iver - 22, A Million. I like how unsettled this album is, I want to give Justin Vernon a hug. Is this hipster too? Probably. Am I a hipster? Probably.
Deftones - Gore. Took me a while to really love this album, it’s dense and kind of relentlessly monotone, but gradually revealed its treasures to me on a bank holiday weekend of drink and pals.
David Bowie - Blackstar. Never really been a big Bowie fan, but I fucking love morbid stuff and couldn’t resist the Thin White Grief Bandwagon. It’s a fairly gut-wrenching listen, and combined with the creepy videos for ‘Blackstar’ and ‘Lazarus’ a perfect sign-off from a titanic audiovisual chameleon.
I would have included Cecil Otter - Dear Echo in here, but it’s a 6 song EP and 3 of the songs are instrumental versions of the other 3 songs, so I was told I wasn’t allowed.
Simon
Pinegrove – Cardinal
Pill Friends – Child Sacrifice
Modern Baseball – Holy Ghost
Microwave – Much Love
Big Thief – Masterpiece
There you go, see you soon x
Annoying The Neighbours Pt 1
Hello you handsome devils! Keen fans of facts will know that we released our debut album 'Vigils' just over a year ago, and so we have decided to commemorate the occasion in slightly tardy fashion by unleashing a couple of acoustic versions of a couple of songs from said album. We originally did these rearrangements for a radio session in the summer, and thought it'd be fun to do a home recording of them. We spent a few pleasant evenings round at Simon's flat in the heat of July making too much noise and this is the result. We hope you enjoy this little Christmas treat that is in no way Christmas related. Click on the lovely artwork Simon did to get yourself the songs, or click here. As ever it's free, or not if you think it's worth paying for.
A lot has changed in the world since we released the album - for one thing I had blonde hair a year ago and now I don't - and we haven't been as active as we'd planned in 2016, but are planning on putting that right in 2017. I would put down our lack of activity due to mourning the deaths of famous celebrities and dealing with tumultuous world events, but the honest truth is that we're just lazy. We'll be back soon with our eagerly awaited top albums of the year lists. Bet you can't wait. Aidan Skellie x
Stuff and Things
Hi! How have you been?
Here's some things:
Mountain Schmountain
Simon’s other and more productive band Mountain Schmountain have just released their second album. It’s real good, I’m allowed to say that cos I’m not in MS anymore (one of the main reasons it’s real good probably) cos we got into a fist fight about whether a particular chord should be played on the beat or not. You can listen to the album on their bandcamp page, and buy it from there also, which you should cos it’s ace.
Friends Having Fun
Our hatefully young friends Merricks Tusk and Little Bribes are both heading out on tour soon, much to my poorly concealed envy. You should go and see them both if they’re heading near you, cos not only are they staggeringly handsome collections of men, they’re also both tremendously good bands.

More Holomax Goodness
Always post about these guys and their amazing videos that should propel them to worldwide stardom, and I’m not about to stop now. Whilst I don’t condone the language used, I agree with the sentiments of the red clad man about ET:
Us
What are Skellies up to I hear you cry? Mum, is that you? Well, we recorded some little treats that we’re not sure what to do with, but will hopefully see the light of day soon. We’ve been squirrelling away new song ideas, and working out our next move, which I imagine will be a long and protracted process whilst real life gets in the way. Other than that, I’ve given up caffeine and been playing a lot of No Man’s Sky. I’m not sure if NMS is good or fun, but it’s sorta compelling, and I admire the scale of it. Also how else am I meant to discover a star system and name it ‘Clive The Star System’?
Until the next time I feel the need to type into the void, stay safe homies! Aidan Skeleton x
We're working on some stuff. Expect it in your ears soon, in the form of music. (at Nottingham, United Kingdom)
Hey there! We've done a new video for 'To Exceed; To Achieve' which is the second song on our album 'Vigils'. If you like the vid and the song then treat yourself to something: ----> Get 'Vigils' free here - http://someskeletons.bandcamp.com ----> Get merch not for free - http://someskeletons.bandcamp.com VIDEO TRIVIA (& LIES) 1. This is the third video we've done that features a dining table in a prominent role. This is the first time that James' dining table hasn't been cast as that character. We filmed it at my flat, so used my dining table. 2. The basic plan was to do a lyric video that I could do by myself whilst James & Simon were away for Easter and I had four days off with nothing to do. Problem was I kept embellishing my idea and gradually realised it'd be easier with a bit of help, and of course having some help meant I could add more to it. 3. The total budget for this video was about £25, most of which was spent on the wig and moustache, though this turned out to be money wasted of course, as Jean Luigi van Guðmundsson has long hair and a moustache already. 4. After much undignified pleading, our friend Joe of the incredible Holomax - http://holomaxtheatre.com - agreed to help out with filming. Also it turned out that Simon would be back from his Easter break in time to help too, so the crew had swollen to blockbuster proportions, or 3. 5. Joe brought round a lens and some lights, Simon brought round hot cross buns, both were greatly appreciated. 6. I had food poisoning from eating a reheated omelet the night before, drank too much coffee and went a bit weird. 7. Jean kindly left us a LyricMaster 6p, it's a privilege to have such a wondrous invention adorn my shelves. Hope you liked all that nonsense, don't be a stranger! Aidan x
Just hanging out on a roof in that #london yesterday (at West Hendon)
End of Term Report #5
It's been a busy year for us what with releasing the album and going on tour and whatnot, and so it behoves us to thank everyone who's helped us out this year, come to a gig or bought some stuff from us, it's been tremendous fun and hopefully there'll be more of the same in 2016. In traditional style, here are each of our top 5 albums of the year, there's no extra category cos we couldn't think of any, but as I'm (Aidan) writing this I'm going to include some surplus stuff. Let's go: James
Everything Everything - Get To Heaven A return to form after 2013's hit-and-miss Arc. It's full of EE's trademark pop weirdness and is catchy as hell.
All Get Out - Movement Technically an EP, but technically I don't care. I was very late to the party getting into their first album (which is now one of my favourites) and this EP is a good sign that their next should be equally as good.
SikTh - Opacities SikTh are one of my favourite bands, so I was very excited when they reformed last year. I am happy to report that the new stuff is just as good as the old stuff, unlike some bands. (Here's looking at you, Refused.)
Doomtree - All Hands Aidan introduced me to this lot when we were discussing music videos. Great dark hip hop with great dark hip hop videos.
The Wombats - Glitterbug The Wombats just consistently produce great indie music. There's nothing particularly new here, but if you like the Wombats, it's another slice of indie pop goodness.
Aidan In no particular order:
Braids - Deep in the Iris I think 'Taste' off this album is one my favourite songs of the year, and the whole album is interesting, intense and good.
Bring Me The Horizon - That's The Spirit I'll probably really hate this album in six months and never listen to it ever again, but I couldn't get enough of it for a month.
Doomtree - All Hands My favourite album of the year, 'Final Boss', 'Cabin Killer', 'Gray Duck' & 'Heavy Rescue' are just great isn't it.
Fathoms - Lives Lived Raaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaar.
Jessica Curry - Everyone's Gone To Rapture (OST) I was completely obsessed with the game that this is the soundtrack for, I couldn't stop thinking about it and the music was such a big part of the game that. It's an occasionally euphoric, occasionally downcast but always beautiful elegy for the world.
I also really enjoyed Blind Wives - Recovery Position EP, but didn't include it cos I had enough albums to fill a list this year, and Rocket League is probably the most fun game I've played for ten years. Booya. Simon
Hop Along – Painted Shut
All Dogs – Kicking Every Day
Say Hi – Bleeders Digest
mewithoutYou – Pale Horses
Witch Coast – Burnt Out By 3pm
There you go then. Happy New Year, may 2016 be filled with joy and wonder for you! Skellies x
Hola! We're doing some gigs in January. There's facebook events for the Bristol & Worcester gigs and there'll be more details about the other two shortly...
Narcissism O’Clock
Hi, First off, thanks to everyone who came to our launch show. It was almost certainly the most fun we've had playing live and we can't thank you enough for the reception we got. We've had lots of positive reviews for 'Vigils', so far we've not had one stinker, which is nice for us. I'm not really sure what the point of posting up reviews of our stuff is but it seems to be something that bands do; it seems a bit self-congratulatory but I'd honestly post up any review we have whether good or bad. Frankly it's tremendously gratifying that anyone listens to us and takes the time to write about it, and for us it's interesting to know what people think about what we've done. If you're a magazine person, you can find a review of the album in the latest issues of Louder Than War and Rock Sound, and here's what we're aware of online in more or less chronological order: 1. Alt Dialogue are very keen and love dinner based lyrics 2. Shout It Loud enjoy the release 3. Stabbed Panda really really hate dinner based lyrics. Really hate them. But are otherwise very keen 4. The Mixed Tape humble us by saying we've released one of the best alternative rock albums in the last decade 5. Already Heard humble us further with more kind words 6. GIGsoup like it, particularly harmonies but don't think we're breaking new ground 7. Rock n Reel are fans 8. AltCorner think the record has a good half and a less good half, and there's welcome praise for lyrics invlolving dinner 9. Mosh like it, particularly the unpredictability of the music but are less keen on the repetitive lyrics. No particular mention of dinner though. I'm not sure if being compared to Mumford & Sons is something we'd like to encourage 10. The Verse are positive about ting 11. London In Stereo think we're so wrong we're right, without ever really revealing how we pull that off, but I think they like it. You decide! 12. New Noise Magazine say yay, and call us a disease in probably the only way that that could be a positive thing So there you go. If you want to make up your own mind about the merits of dinner based lyrics and listen to "a truly spectacular piece of work", then you can buy the album or download the album for free on our bandcamp page, or listen on spotify if you don't want to give us money/us to have your email address and send extremely occasional missives. Thanks to everyone who's bought or downloaded the album, and helped us out with it, it's been great. We'll be back in a few days with our no doubt eagerly awaited annual Yuletide blog. Until then, we remain your humble Skellies x

Up On The Rocks
