Went to see Avenue Q last night.
It was fun enough, but severely showed its 14 years of age. Not too cool with comedy Asian accents and their definition of racism (like saying the black character was just as racist as the white ones for making jokes about “P*laks”).
But worse of all (for me) was when a not insignificant portion of the audience applauded when Lucy the Slut “died”. [sarcasm]Oh yay, a lady who enjoys sex got what she deserved!![/sarcasm]
I saw that as a teen and thought it was great, and I was just recently thinking about how if I watched it again, I’d be far less impressed.
I loved it to pieces when it first came out, listening to it endlessly in 2004 and finally seeing a production in 2008, but yeahhh... it’s super dated, and not just cause of Gary Coleman and George W. Bush:/ Some of the songs still hold up (”Schadenfreude” is still perfection) but I just can’t listen to “Everyone’s a Little Bit Racist” anymore. There was definitely a kind of 2000s-era “Heyyy, we’re all equal now and can all make fun of each other!” kind of comedy that we’re getting past now.
Also the idea of a 20-something woman being shocked and appalled that people look at porn on the internet is hilariously outdated too.
