I honestly find it depressing that Merlin, at the beginning of the show, was so desperate to find a purpose; a reason for his existence and this gift he couldn’t quite understand. The look on his eyes when Kilgharrah tells him that yes, you indeed have a mission and you, of all people, have a destiny to fulfil is priceless. Before knowing his magic is meant to protect Prince Arthur Pendragon, he’s excited. There’s is finally a use, and there’s finally a place for him.

Little did he know that same destiny would tear him apart. Because that destiny made him love everything on his path just to take it away. That prophecy made a vessel full of devotion out of Merlin, making him lose his freedom and right to be free in order to keep Arthur safe. He sacrificed his life and his youth for this. And worse, he sacrificed his heart.

But hey, at least there is a purpose, right?
