Lines of poetry by our Shaikh Muhammad Ibn Alī Ibn Ādam al-Ityūbī (May Allāh have mercy upon him):
يا أيها العزيز فاعلم أنه لا بد في ذا الفن أن تتقته
My dear one, you must know that when it comes to this discipline, it is imperative for you to gain proficiency in it
ملازما مجالس الحفظة محترما لهم بلا أنفة
by regularly attending the gatherings of those who have preserved its knowledge, remaining respectful towards them without any disdain;
بالحفظ والفهم وللتقوى الزم مع التواضع لكل مسلم
memorizing, understanding, always observing taqwaa, and maintaining humility towards every Muslim;
مذاكرا بالفهم مع أولي الهدى مجانبا ذوي الخبال والردى
revising with comprehension along with others of sound guidance, and avoiding individuals who are foolish and destructive.
إن لم تجذ مذاكرا فلتلزم مطالعا كلام أهل القدم
If you find none to revise with, then you must continue poring over the statements of the well-versed scholars.
فإن من رزق أن يطالعا كلامهم بالحفظ والفهم معا
Indeed, anyone who has been blessed to peruse their words, with both memorization and comprehension,
فإنه ينال فتح الباب من ربه الكاشف للحجاب
shall certainly have the gates opened for him by his Lord, who removes all barriers.
نسألك اللهم أن تجعلنا من فيض هذا الفن قد نلنا المنى
O Allaah, we implore You alone to able us to achieve our aspirations in this expansive field.
And he rahimahoe Allaah said:
يا من يريد فتح باب العلم وأن يكون بارعا في الفهم
I say to anyone who wishes to have the gates of knowledge opened for him, and be outstanding in comprehension:
فلتتق الله وتلزم السنن وابتعدن عن أهل سوء وفتن
You must observe taqwaa of Allaah and adhere to the teachings of His Messenger, and you must remain far away from people of notoriety and turmoil.
ولتسلكن في الهدي نهج السلف ولتبتعد عن ابتداع الخلف
You must ensure that the path you follow is the one traversed by the foremost generations of Islaam, and you must avoid what those who came later on invented and then claimed to be part of the religion.
فكل خير في اتباع من سلف وكل شر في ابتداع من خلف
All goodness lies in following the course traversed by the foremost generations of Islaam, while all ills lie in adopting what those who came later on invented and then claimed to be part of the religion.
يا من يريد أن يسود غيره في العلم ناشرا لكل خيره
I say to anyone who desires to lead others in knowledge, spreading its goodness to all:
أخلض لربك وأعل همتك ترى المواهب تحل ساحتك
You must remain sincere to your Lord and keep your aspirations high. When you do that, you will find yourself gifted with aptitude.
فالجد منك ثم فتح الباب من ربك المهيمن الوهاب
The effort required has to come from you, and then the opening of the gates comes from your Lord, the All-Acquainted Watcher who bestows profuse blessings.
قد وعد المجاهدين بالهدى قال ‘لنهدينهم’ فاسترشدا
He promised His guidance to those who struggle in His path, as He stated, “We will most certainly guide them,” so seek direction from this.
فالجد وحده يكون مهملا إن لم يكن بالفتح منه مكملا
However, you must also recognize that your efforts alone will be futile if they are not brought to completion by the opening of the gates which comes from Allaah.
فرحم الله الكريم من غدا في مثل هذا العصر قد تجردا
May Allaah, the Most Generous, have mercy upon anyone who devotes himself in a time like this
في طلب العلم الشريف معرضا عن كل ما يلهي ودنيا رافضا
to seeking the honoured knowledge of Islaam, turning away from all distraction, and rejecting the lowly;
مشمرا عن شاق جد جاثيا بين يدي أولي الرشاد واعيا
remaining diligent, kneeling down as he sits before the possessors of guidance, listening attentively,
وكاتبا جميع ما يسمعه من الفوائد التي تنفعه
making note of every point he hears which is to his advantage,
وحافظا مذاكرا ما نقلا مع رفقائه الهداة النبلا
and then memorizing what he wrote and revising it with his esteemed peers of sound guidance.
فإن ذا يحظى بفتح الباب من ربه الكاشف للحجاب
That is the person who will have the gates opened for him by his Lord, who removes all barriers.
نسألك اللهم أن تكرمنا بالعلم والتقوى وجنة الهنا
O Allaah, You alone are the One we beseech to bless us with knowledge, taqwaa, and Jannah which is the abode of happiness.
