another one of my uni portfolio pieces. something about kind gestures of strangers that go unnoticed because we're so used to them and the inherent goodness of people etc etc etc
honestly i just wanted to draw a comic because i wanted to show off my illustration skills. i wish i had spent more time on these & drawn more comics for this series but i was running out of time :(

To Starve a Body
I have been starved my whole life.
Every ounce of reciprocity, every drop fell to the floor.
I quiver and cup it in my hands.
I gather what I am able, dirty sip after sip,
and I thank them for such fulfilling meals.
I sit in that awful dark and wait,
waiting, waiting, waiting still.
And the fear of never being fed again
swallows my empty stomach whole.
And when I finally see that crevice
—that tiny crack of light that signaled the door open—
I will hold a person by their legs
and cry so horribly they will flinch
and they will pour me that drink, and I will be happy.
If I am lucky enough, they will stay
and bask in my praise for just a while longer
run their fingers through my hair and thank me hollowly.
If my body aches, I shall ignore it.
If my eyes wet, I will say they are of joy,
and they will be satisfied all the more,
and I will be happy.
Then, one day, a man will come with a bowl,
and though I try to hold him down,
to say endless praise for his pretty ears,
he will back away.
He will sit against the door and wait,
waiting, waiting still.
I am not used to them waiting for me.
I do not like how the bowl sits perfectly still on the ground, full.
But I touch my tongue against its contents,
and the milk has been warmed.
I watch him tell me how pretty I am,
how my filthy dress looks like moonlight,
and oh, how his mouth moves so perfectly,
speaking my name, saying his thanks,
that I hate how gentle he was being,
and my unease grows as his eyes gleam at me.
He was perfectly unwanting
—but my starving, rotting body had hoped he would want me so hard,
there would be no words for it.
He was so kind,
and I felt so cruel, grasping onto him like a lunatic.
Perhaps that is why he left the bowl.

i don't know what to say, im a fan of characters who died at a young age and who could have accomplished much more if they lived longer ಥ‿ಥ
oh, and it seems to me that Ming dynasty really liked to write fanfics bc a lot of classical literature comes from these times (and The Investiture of the Gods (封神演義) too lmao). let's pray he didn't face such a brutal death in reality and died from smth else or im gonna cry (╥﹏╥)

Cheng Wang (成王) is presenting to Zhou-gong (周公) the doubled wheat as a sign of good omen, and they are exchanging poems about it (馈禾 and 嘉禾）

these two basically started my great love towards the chinese history. the only thing i don't forgive them for is burning the Zhou's books, but i prefer to remain a sceptic and to think it didn't happen in real life

meet my new historical crush (✿^‿^) he was the regent during the beginning of Cheng Wang's rule (he was his uncle) and what is special about him - he didn't usurp the country and when the king came of age he left the palace (he "ruled" the country for 7 years)
Cheng Wang's father killed the previous chinese king from Shang dynasty so the situation in country wasn't stable. there were still previous king's relatives left and Ji Dan's brothers weren't satisfied with the fact he was the regent. so he left the palace to prove he didn't want to hurt the king and had no intention of usurpation. soon bad omens happened: poor harvest and locust attack. Cheng Wang asked his uncle to return to the capital, and as soon as he had done it, the rebellion started. he managed to quell it and after that the prosperous years of Zhou dynasty started. some historians say that he even took part in completing the "Classic of Poetry"/"Book of Songs" (collection of folk songs)! he also came up with new management of lands and rituals, which were took up by later dynasties

i'm learning about Zhou right now, so sad there are no materials telling about their clothes and attire ｡:ﾟ(;´∩`;)ﾟ:｡ so i hope that their fashion didn't differ too much from the later dynasties
