F.J.Haydn :: Keyboard Sonata No. 31 in Ab - Hob.XVI/46

The Divertimento in Ab major, Hob. XVI/46, was composed in the late 1760s. The entire sonata has a sense of peacefulness to it that seems almost peculiar. Throughout the entire piece, there is heavy ornamentation and brilliant scales, which is quite usual for Haydn. Each movement is written in some variant of sonata form.

The development section of this first movement is lengthy and actually occupies one measure more than the entire exposition, which is quite unusual for composers of the classical period since it was sought for a closer balance between the exposition, development and recapitulation.

II. Adagio The second movement is a written in D-flat Major and takes on a more contropuntal texture, meaning counterpoint plays a significant role in the piece. This movement adopts the Baroque sonata form. It opens with a flowing melodic line, specifically marked ‘expressivo,’ which is immediately repeated with an added counter-melody. After the exposition, the first theme is picked up again in the same key with the second theme following in the tonic. Both themes throughout the recapitulation are treated differently and are moderately expanded.

III. Finale. Presto The third movement is more lively than the other movements of this sonata, but it presents itself with a supple charm. A coda is appended to the end of this movement where scales are to be played over a steady bass rising up the A-flat Major scale, which builds up energy only to be released in a flurry of notes that close this sonata.

W.A.Mozart :: Piano Sonata No. 3 in Bb - K. 281

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Piano Sonata No. 3 in B flat major, K 281 (189f) (1774) is a sonata in three movements. This piano sonata is one of the most virtuosic pieces Mozart ever composed. It was written during the visit Mozart paid to Munich for the production of La finta giardiniera, an Italian opera Mozart wrote in January 1775 while in Munich. The piece was written from late 1774 to the beginning of the following March.

The theme of this first movement introduces a delightful dualism between sixteenth triplets and thirty-second notes.

II. Andante amoroso The second movement is a modified sonata form in E-flat Major. The first theme begins in the Tonic, E-flat Major, and beautifully transitions into the second theme which begins on the Dominant, B-flat Major.

III. Rondo (allegro) This final movement in rondo form is in a gavotte rhythm and begins back on B-flat Major. This movement is packed with the expression of concerto-like effects, for instance with the short cadenza and the return of the theme beneath a trill accompaniment. The second episode in in minor and introduces a slight bit of melancholy, which the third episode interrupts with a loud, dramatically spread diminished-seventh chord. It ends with a brief, playful coda.

W.A.Mozart :: Piano Sonata No. 2 in F - K. 280

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Piano Sonata No. 2 in F major, K 280 (189e) (1774) is a sonata in three movements. It was composed along with other piano sonatas during the visit Mozart paid to Munich for the production of his opera,  La Finta Giardiniera, from late 1774 to the beginning of the following March.

The first theme of the exposition begins with a forte arpeggiated chord followed by three thirds. The next theme contains a series of falling quarter notes over block chords and an Alberti bass, rapid sixteenth notes, and falling fifths. The second theme consists of legato triplets in the right hand over octaves in the left and contains frequent accidentals, so it’s somewhat chromatic. The third theme is mostly quarter and eighth notes with an irregular accompaniment. The exposition ends with a C major chord, the dominant of F major.

II. Adagio The second movement is an adagio in F minor. The movement is a siciliana — a musical style or genre often included as a movement within larger pieces of music starting in the Baroque period. It is in a slow 6/8 or 12/8 time with lilting rhythms, making it somewhat resemble a slow jig or tarantella, and is usually in a minor key. — although it is not marked as such. The mood of this movement is mournful and tragic, with an opening resembling that of a funeral march.

III. Presto This final movement is a presto rondo in F Major. It’s relatively short for a presto, which generally takes the performer between two and three minutes to perform.

W.A.Mozart :: Piano Sonata No. 1 in C - K. 279

The exposition opens with a turning figure for the left hand, which forms the basis for much of this movement. An Alberti bass is later introduced for the left hand after the opening two bars whilst the right hand plays the melody based on the opening turning figure. The opening section also uses chromatic appogiaturas for a bit of colour. The first movement ends with a perfect cadence and a three bar elaboration in the tonic key, C Major.

II. Andante This movement in F Major, the sub-dominant of C Major, is full of expressive shading, which is the result of Mozart’s harmonic freedom and is structured in sonata form. By the end of the exposition, Mozart modulated to the dominant of F Major, C Major, and begins the development in this key. The movement makes temporary transitions through G and D minor, in an order to move back to the tonic for the recapitulation.

III. Allegro This movement goes by quickly in 2/4 and has C Major as its tonic. This piece features an unexpectedly quick and active part for the left hand. Mozart ends the sonata off with two firm chords, which he marked Coda.
