Things I Didn’t Listen To (But Probably should have)
a dad, a boy, and a battery
Dad told me ages ago to buy a battery boost kit.
I didn’t.
Said I’d get one eventually.
Now I’ve got one arriving tomorrow—because my car wouldn’t start.
Because I didn’t listen.
J told me yesterday, “Take it for a drive.”
I smiled. Said maybe later.
But later came, and I was too cozy to move.
Now I’m sitting here with a dead battery and a half-smirk thinking,
he probably would’ve kept it running.
Because I didn’t listen.
I knew I needed rest this weekend.
But I also knew I needed joy. Connection.
So I said yes to the dinner, the conversations, the people who showed up,
and no to the ones who kept expecting more than they give.
That part? I did listen to.
So maybe I’m learning.
Maybe the quiet “next time” moments don’t need regret—
just a little grace, a laugh, and a better charger.
Thanks, Dad. You were right.
J, you too.
Next time, I’ll take the drive.
