As we walked home, I clung to Gin's arm, wishing I could stay with him as long as he was hurting. Despite being upset myself, there was something about being around him again that made me not want to part with him. Perhaps I'm afraid he'll be mad again next time I see him, and I want his kindness to last as long as possible. But he's so sad. I can feel it radiating from his body like steam. I was soaked in it by the time I walked through the door and plunged onto the couch.
My nightmares are becoming more frequent. I often fall asleep on the couch, reading until I can't hold my eyes open any longer. Sometimes I steal books from the library. I don't know if I'm allowed to take them, that's why I call it stealing. I always bring them back. I'm sure Cross wouldn't mind...
I keep dreaming about him. His face is never covered in my dreams. He seems so normal, so much less sinister when you can see his whole face... But I'm afraid he's gone for good. I know that's not positive thinking, but I'm so worried. More worried than I could admit to anyone at least.
I feel more lonely than ever. Kel is so busy with work, and I'm so busy mulling over the same things over and over again in my head. I'm a nervous wreck. Things have to brighten up soon. It's been storming too long.
The Alarms Aren't Ringing
The ginger haired elf sat perched on a table in one of the main rooms of the library. Her emerald eyes were glossy as she stared out the window, rain streaming down the glass on the other side. Her fingers fumbled idly with the pages of a spell book on the Holy Light.
Veilissia hummed to herself, putting away the books that had been strewn across the floor last night by an unknown force. The platinum haired elf glanced occasionally over to her companion with a smug smile, but kept quiet.
If Unison had been paying attention, she might've felt bad for not helping clean up, but she seemed to be lost deep in her thoughts. The room felt hot and muggy, and smelled of wet paper. The walls seemed to be closing in around them. Unison's ears perked and flattened a few times as she watched the water drops on the dirty window.
The violin from the graveyard had stopped since Cross disappeared. Now it was so quiet at night. She never much liked staying in her room at the Tower, and wouldn't do so unless Cross promised to keep watch. But now, she spent as little time there as possible.
She'd run into several Forsaken in the past few weeks, and the encounters had seemed to put her in a constant state of uneasiness. They always looked at her with those haunting eyes, sizing her up and smirking at her. The place seemed to be flooding with them as of late, adding to her reasons to only come to the Tower when she had to.
Veilissia didn't seem to mind the new employees, which actually helped Sonny forget about how frightened and uncomfortable she really was. If Veil was calm and collected, why couldn't she be? Though, to be fair, Veilissia's father was the Undercity Ambassador, so she'd had plenty of time around the Forsaken, and was probably used to their empty eyes and rotten smells. Most of the time, Sonny tried to stay near Veil. Despite the woman's hard exterior, she seemed to have a soft spot for Unison.
Though she would never admit it, Unison had been counting the days since Cross had disappeared. She listened around every day, and asked Suvere every time she came in to work if they'd found him. Certainly the man was annoyed, but that didn't stop her. It was impulsive, she just had to know. Even at home, she would lie awake wondering where he was, and if he was okay.
The young elf was under more stress than she'd ever been under, and it was a strange new burden weighing her down.
(I just thought it was cute.)
Despite the fact that the trip was sudden and slightly obligatory, I had a wonderful time. It was a much needed opportunity for Kel and I to have some time together away from our responsibilities. We went to several different beaches and retreats, testing the different waters and lounging around in the summer sun. Unfortunately enough, I got a bit of a sunburn, especially on my ears. I'm tempted to wear a hat when I return to work.
That's the hard part. Returning to work. Not for me, but for Kel. I figured it out about two days into the vacation. We were lying on the beach and I was falling asleep in the warm sand.
"You know ever think of pursuing any other interests? I mean you've got lots of talents in categories aside from... Books." His tone was casual, but the relaxed attitude had a prying undertone.
I opened my eyes and shaded them with a hand. As I looked at him, I could see that look on his face. He was worried. Like the time when we were younger, I broke my ankle and he had to carry me home. He was afraid for me.
"You could have asked me about it. I wouldn't have been upset. But I'm sure you have jumped to worst case scenario conclusions."
Kel offered up a weak smile. "I don't want something to happen to you. It's one thing for you to be a Knight and hang out in the city, protected by bigger, stronger Knights where nothing worse than theft happens most the time. But that place isn't safe. And I don't know how much I trust Syn'rio to take care of you there."
I shut my eyes and lied my head back down on my arm. "I'm an adult," I repeated for the umpteenth time since I'd actually become an adult.
"Yeah, but you're my little sister and I'm worried. Come on, you understand, don't you?" I was silent. "Just... Think about how much more you can do with yourself than... that."
And throughout our travels, similar conversations took place sporadically. Eventually, nearing the end of our vacation, things grew more desperate on his end.
"Let's go through the shops in the city when we get home and see if there's any work. I know you want something to do besides patrolling the city and that's totally fine. You know what, I bet that DJ friend of yours might want some help with some of her parties..." Kel droned on and on about alternative things for me to do that don't involved returning to the Tower. And I'd become fed up.
"Kel, listen," I interrupted. "I understand where you're coming from. But you have to understand where I'm coming from. I signed a contract with Mister Cross when I entered his tower. And that means that I have an obligation to be loyal to he and his tower. Okay? I have to stay there because I committed to it. And more importantly, I want to stay there. You have to know that I was scared when I found out about the murders. Anyone would be. But I trust in the people that I work with, the people who have become my second family, to protect me and to protect the tower." I took a deep breath, feeling faint from having finally said what was bottled up inside of me the whole week. "I'm going back, and that's final."
And he finally stopped pestering me. The next few days were much more pleasant. We talked and laughed like we did when we were kids. I told him about some of my adventures and he listened politely, though I could tell he was itching to bring up the subject we had already resolved. But I pretended not to notice, and gave him time to let it go.
Finished Lady Fy, lounging with a smoke in her undies— well close enough.
