the dark romance debate

The other night I sat with my sister talking about how I can stomach horror movies better than romance movies and she looked at me like I was crazy BUT LISTEN!!!

There is nothing that disturbs me more than when abusive/problematic behavior is justified and romanticized. With the rise of dark romance books I've seen genuinely terrifying things be passed off as "a different kind of romance."

When consuming horror media I can at least feel a little at ease knowing that the killer or the stalker or whatever IS the antagonist. Yes we can get some sort of backstory to how they ended up there, but it doesn't get excused nearly as much as the stuff in dark romance books. Like, there's a very clear line in the sand saying, "hurting people is bad."

I understand that a lot of dark romance is catered towards a specific fantasy but there has to be a line, especially when it becomes really big in media and suddenly becomes "normal," (like stalking being labeled as "aw he's so protective" or controlling/isolating behavior as "he just loves her so much he doesn't want anyone to hurt her") ESPECIALLY when the protagonist fights back against it, right?

Am I crazy? Is this just something I'm not suited for or are there other people who find some of the "dark romance" plots horror re-wrapped as romance? I'm not trying to shame dark romance readers I just don't get it and am trying to understand lol help

My only real gripe with people who say Mel and Langdon give "sibling" vibes is that their interactions are nothing like any sibling interactions I have had or seen.

You wanna know what I did when I saw my older brother after not seeing him for almost a year? I said "sup bitch" and then we argued over Attack On Titan.

My other brother? He told me "happy birthday cunt" and the same week told me that the Romans would have fought for nacho fries at three in the morning.

Never have I EVER seen a brother figure look at a sister figure so mesmerized and with such fondness as Frank Langdon looked at Mel King while she explained a patient's ankle injury to them. I feel like the true sibling dynamic duo so far is 100% Whitaker and Santos, with the dumb nicknames and casual bullying and rage baiting, thank you for coming to my TedTalk.

okay kingdon nation here me out,

A fic solely centered around Mel having caretaker fatigue and really just being done with being in charge and responsible for decisions all the time, enter Langdon who feels so out of control after rehab because yeah he's sober now but godDAMN does he not feel responsibilities enough.

Like the guy isn't being acknowledged by his coworkers, he isn't getting assigned to cases that require a lot of surgical skill and trust to care for. He's fresh out of rehab and everyone is kind of walking on eggshells and babying him in terms of "we can cover for you, we've been doing it for months" like Robby said.

Meanwhile Mel is always so alone, people clear out around her and she's left to finish up cases by herself and she has to think of patients and Becca and god she really doesn't have time to be injured or vulnerable because 24/7 people are counting on her.

I just need a good old fashioned fic where the roles get reversed and Langdon is given the opportunity to make decisions and be in charge and help take care of her and Mel has to let herself be taken care of and not worry about who needs her help next. He did so good in 2x2!!! He helped and noticed when she was overwhelmed and made decisions that were responsible (without permission by Robby or criticism from the other pittlings) and Mel didn't get sent into a panic attack or sensory overload from all the stuff happening around them!!!!
