Sophie Rundle to YOU Magazine.
“ ‘It meant that we felt so much more empowered than we would normally, and that was important because we also wanted to tell these women’s story in a way that represented them and wasn’t simply for titillation. In the end, Gentleman Jack was simply a love story we can all relate to. I’ve never had a breakdown like Ann [Walker], but I’ve had my heart broken and fancied people I shouldn’t have fancied. Everyone’s been through that.’ ”
I truly appreciate Sophie Rundle's respect for Ann Walker and her will to shine a light over the forgotten story of this courageous woman

“ ‘It’s easy to write Ann Walker off, but she definitely had this little spark of defiance. Sally said to me, “Anne Lister was amazing, but she had the charisma to deal with all the opprobrium, while Ann Walker had none of that. Ann was religious, she was homophobic against herself and racked with guilt, so to do this transgressive thing must have taken so much strength of character and I love her so much for that. I just think, “What a hero.”’

I love SR’s acting choices as AW. The hesitancy when she speaks (The scenes where she says, “Oh, I...”), the insecurity, low self-esteem/confidence and anxiousness shown thru her fidgeting fingers/hands and slouched posture. I just love those nuances, they’re fantastic to witness. She’s seriously a brilliant actor.
I totally agree with you! She is just amazing and I love how she played Ann Walker. Can we talk, very briefly, about her acting in episode 5 & 6 pleaseeee?!? about two specific things because OH MY GOD.
I love this bit. SR is perfect here and it’s the first time we see this side of Ann Walker. This sends shivers down my spine every single time. Her eyes are on fire. You can see that she means every single word she’s saying. The emphasis on “die”, the little pause she does right after to let it sink in, the breath she takes, everything is just perfect.
The way she conveys anxiety, obsession, frustration, pain and tension with her gestures is brilliant. I can physically feel her pain when she does this:
And you know, in these scenes you can see how fuuucking tense her body is the whole time, she never relaxes, and that hurts like hell.
I can’t really process my thoughts about her acting because I’m amazed by her and I just can’t form coherent thoughts apparently (it also seems that tonight I can’t english)…anyway, I just wanted to say, to close this post, that I love how she portrayed not only the anxiousness and the insecurity but also that quiet strength that you could see was present all along and finally manifested itself in the last episode.

Agree 100%. I am in awe of her acting
Everybody talks about what Suranne Jones got right portraying a kickass “masculine” lesbian a la tophat and greatcoat, but Sophie Rundle did such fabulous work portraying all that unutterable wordless speechless lesbian longing through little more than wonderfully subtle and varied looks.
Exactly!
this took a completely different direction than what i had anticipated

Sophie Rundle interview for Brief Encounters (2016)
“I feel really proud to be a part of something that brings Ann Walker back into cultural awareness. I think she is someone we should be incredibly proud and respectful of. She was so nearly eradicated from history because her family was so ashamed of her, but I’m proud to have played a part in giving her dignity back and giving her the admiration I think she deserves.” - Sophie Rundle for The Last Magazine
Thinking about some stuff regarding the real Ann Walker...
Ann Walker outlived Anne Lister by 14 years.
Ann Walker was put away in a mental asylum because her family was that ashamed of her
Ann Walker was buried far away from her wife as unceremoniously as possible
Ann Walker's nephew (?) completely ignored her last will
Ann Walker is only ever remembered as Anne Lister's "lesbian friend" on the official Walker family history website
This is why it's important to not only remember and celebrate Anne Lister's life. But Ann Walker's too. Ann Walker married another woman in the early 1800s and she went against all the expectations from her family
Ann Walker who survived her parent's deaths and the deaths of all her siblings
Ann Walker who was a sexual abuse survivor
Ann Walker who had to deal with sexist mental health prescriptions who would dismiss her mental illnesses as mere hysteria or melancholy and that all she needed was a "good adventure"
No ladies and gents. If there was ever a time where we need to celebrate and remember the lives of historical lesbians, it has to be now. And if Ann Walker is looking down from heaven (or wherever else) then I hope that she will be proud. That she will finally be at peace that she is being recognized, loved, accepted and appreciated
And finally. I would love to thank the whole production team behind Gentleman Jack and especially give all my praises to Sophie Rundle for perfectly portraying this amazing person
So true. I feel so sad to see how underapprecciated she is, i hope someone will uncover her story and give her the honors that she deserves.
