ââOh, no thank you. Iâm only eating pineapples and cranberries for the next few days. Iâm doing a little experiment.â
âAnd, what does this experiment include? I canât think of any benefits from only eating two types of fruit.â
âOh godâ the last thing I want and I hate to seem rude, but can you please not move so much?â Lucy muttered, closing her eyes for a split second; the uneasy feeling of nausea washing over her. âIâm getting motion sickness just watching you.â
âOh, no Iâm so sorry. do you need anything? I can get some water, I might have some medicine in my bag.â Sophie immediately stopped moving and began searching for something to help the woman who was clearly looking green and nauseous, hoping to bring her some form of relief.
Sophie gave her order and turned back to Gabe. âItâs impossible to have a favorite 80âČs movie. But if I really had to pick, I guess Iâd pick Ghostbusters.â She smiled at him, slowing the movements of her nervous fingers and finally letting loose. âAnd I promise you, it takes a lot for me to hate someone, especially over a board game.â She liked Gabeâs silliness, something she needed more of from people around here, it kept the mood light, and she liked it that way. âSo, Iâm curious. Whatâs the worst thing youâve seen as an EMT?â
Sophie was relieved when Buffy picked up. âI just-Iâve been having a rough night, and I just needed someone to talk to.â
âBurgers are fine.â Sophie assured him. âWell, Iâm a criminal justice major, and I want to work for the FBI one day.â She stood up and took another nearby rag and began helping Blue clean up some tables even though he told her not to. She felt bad sitting there, making him clean up while she watched. âJesus, this must have been some party.â
âNothing too extreme. Just some people who get off on the idea of leading people to believe that theyâre someone else. But, there was one person who would write me poetry and letters and send them in the mail. But, whenever I would ask to talk over the phone or over facetime they wouldnât do it. Needless to say, I caught on pretty fast.â
âOh god, oh god.â Sophie sat up in bed, startled by the nightmare that she just had. She quickly wiped away at the tears on her face and wrapped herself tighter in her blanket. When she rolled around for a little bit, she finally gave up and reached for her phone. She aimlessly searched until she found the right number, hoping they could answer. âHey, Iâm sorry to call you this late.â
âBless you for answering the door. My car broke down a few miles back and your house is the only one not giving me murder vibes. Also itâs kinda raining super hard and my hair is starting to freeze. Can I use your phone?â
âOh my gosh, please come in. Iâll get you another towel, my phone is on the counter. Are you okay? Do you need anything else?â
âUmm no⊠You canât have a twizzler because this one is mine?â
âI mean, no offense but I really didnât want it to be that one.. Donât you have any other twizzlers?âÂ
âI donât want to cause any controversy, but Iâm a bigger fan of Marvel. And I admire anyone who still has board games and doesnât totally rely on apps to play anything.â Her thumbs continued to move around nervously, letting herself loosen up around Gabe. She has no idea why she was so nervous, as she felt like she had known him forever. âAnd I grew up on 80âČs movies, my family was pretty much stuck in the past.â That same shiver came back when she mentioned her family, but it once again disappeared. She giggled, forgetting about what happened, and looked up at Gabe to see the same smrik on his face that had been there all night. âMaybe if tonight works out, the next date can be a board game tournament?â
Sophie gave the waitress her drink order and placed her hands on the table to twiddle her thumbs, something she always did when she was nervous. She looked back at Gabe to continue their conversation. "Well, I like comic books. I'm a sucker for crime documentaries, which I know is really ironic. Other than that, there's nothing too special. And what about you, Mr. EMT?"
"Thank you." Sophie waited for Gabe and lead him to a table to sit at, taking off her jacket and placing it beside her. "Well, I've always been interested in psychology. The idea of studying someone and why they are who they are is incredible to me. Plus, I've seen some things that kind of fueled my fire." She smirked at him and blushed at his smile, but took note of his changes in attitude.
âWell, I think youâre amazing for doing what you do Gabe. Not many people are willing to do that, and the fact that you are is so humblingâ Sophie smiled at him, hoping they could reach the restauraunt soon because she was starving. âSo, do you have any family here?â
"I wouldn't say that I'll be a cop." Sophie smiled. "Maybe a criminal profiler, y'know, Criminal Minds type stuff." Her mind went back to the moment he called her cute. No one had ever really called her that, but when they did it sent a shiver down her spine. It still brought back bad memories, but Sophie got good at pushing them back. "You must be a pretty brave guy to be an EMT."
âWell, Iâm a criminal justice major at Westfield U. I spend my day looking at different cases of psychopaths and serial killers., so thatâs great. Other than that Iâm not too interesting.â Sophie smiled at Gabe, but couldnât help but shake off a feeling of something wierd in the air. âOkay, your turn. Youâre obviously interesting enough to accept a date from someone younger than you.â she said mocking his earlier remark.
âHey, I know that look. âNo, donât do that, donât look at me like you donât know what Iâm talking about. You got that whole judgy look going on.â
âFirst off, Iâm not judging you. Second, I donât really know what youâre talking about.â
