So I was re reading chapters 58 and 59 and I noticed Ogier having quite funny expressions in some small panels. I was supposed to only take pics of him in those two chapters but I eventually took pics of those expressions from other chapters too. So here y'all go:

Some rambling about what those could mean...

I also think it's interesting it chronologicallly went : vampire (Dominique), dham (Dante), human (Ogier). Dhampirs are perfectly in the middle between vampires and humans.

They are also all looking towards us, the readers (or towards someone walking towards the door).

Ogier

Since it's supposed to be the door (≈ boundary) 'separating human from demon' (Dante's text), I wonder if it's a reference to the fact that Ogier is helping spreading Miel (which is supposed to turn a 'human' into a 'vampire', which to most humans, are nothing more than demons). Thus, his door is open and moreover, he's inviting anyone to go through with a big smile.

Behind Ogier's door is a mirror......which makes it reflect into an infinite number of doors. 'There is no beginning and no end.' It's either referring directly to Ogier (backstory, personal goal, etc), or to the general situation- there is no beginning to the hate dhams receive, and there will be no end. Even if the main characters succeed in their current goal and save dhams, hate will continue spreading like poison.

Dante

On the other hand, Dante is not looking at the door, not considering entering (for now or forever). Quite the opposite ; he's almost....guarding his door. He wants to stop this from happening. He wants to save the dhams, his family.

Dominique

She's knocking on the door, which means she's asking permission to enter. She seems nervous, almost shy. Maybe it's because she wants to understand dhams (and humans) better, as she herself admits she might not have been as fair as she thought she was to them. She wants to break the boundary that keeps them apart. Petals are floating around her, something new blossoming- or maybe dying petal by petal. I am not quite sure.

Those are just some of my thoughts! Searching the metaphor behind it is interesting. Thank you for reading!!

Dante’s namesake makes sense in this context. Dante in The Divine Comedy was a rare living person able to travel through Hell, Purgatory, and Heaven. He was also an exile trying to find meaning through his journey. Vanitas’ Dante also is systematically ostracized for political reasons much larger than himself and can travel between worlds. VNC’s Dante was just able to use this as a workable business model.

I wonder if Johann is named-whether in universe, out universe, or both- after Johann Georg Faust. Yes, that Faust. Alchemist Faust. Occult Faust. Probably demiurge Faust. Who the shapeless one is already based on I believe.
