Grocery store gothic

• “Accident in aisle thirteen” the intercom says. But there is no thirteenth aisle, the store doesn’t go that far. Now that you think about it, the store doesn’t even seem to have speakers for the intercom. Where did that voice come from? • The store is said to be open 24 hours, but nobody talks about the deep rumbling that comes from the ‘staff only’ area every twelve hours. • You come up to a worker to ask him a question. He responds in a monotone voice, and carries on doing his job. Is every worker like this? Why do all of them have blank stares. Is that blood on his shoulder? • You asked where the meat and poultry section is, the clerk tells you that the meat doesn’t arrive until the early morning. It’s always fresh, he says. Just tastes a bit different than your regular, it’s more stringy. • You could have sworn you saw a rat in your peripheral vision. But was it only just a rat? • None of these price tags make sense. It’s like they’re written in some ancient language that you cannot understand. You ask the clerk what the price is, she says three dollars. • Did that camera just blink? • A week later you tell the grocery store five blocks away about the one you visited. They laugh and tell you that there’s just an empty lot there. “They wanted to build a store, but one day the equipment and vehicles were just gone, probably didn’t have enough funding.” Now you know.
