I rlly like that abed from community wants to socialize and wants to have friends. I feel like it’s a trope in sitcoms especially where the autistic character doesn’t care about other ppl and doesn’t want to make an effort to be social bcus they are just too Logical or smth, which I feel like is a kind of cold take on what the autistic experience often is. I love sm that abed rlly wants to understand and connect with ppl but he hates that he can’t, that is rlly real and relatable. I just love that community manages to write an autistic character that behaves cold and blunt and has trouble understanding empathy but at the same time is full of emotion and love for others and has a longing for friendship and connection. Neurotypical writers tend to assume sometimes that autistic ppl who behave “robotically” don’t have feelings or social needs but that is often not true. I’m like abed, I struggle with socialization and often seem like I dont want to be interacting with ppl when I am but I actually rlly want to connect with ppl and love to make friends and I just can’t understand how. and I just love community for exploring the nuance there

i hate how shirley got 0 character development but pierce got so much. like, pierce barely improved, he was the same racist old fuck at death as he was season 1, episode 1.

pierce’s character was way too tolerated by the group, and i could’ve liked him if they’d actually let ALL of the screen time he got make him better. but, shirley’s character was an extremely likeable one, even if she was judgy and a little bit racist (“i’m a woman, i guess it’s wrong for me to eat that, abed, sorry”) and way too overly religious. and she could’ve IMPROVED but they gave her like one episode??? if that??? shirley was lowkey so much better than pierce!!

as someone with religious trauma, a lot of the things shirley said FUCKED WITH ME. but she could’ve improved, and if she had, i think she would’ve been my favorite (after trobedison). because, without the judgy comments, religious tangents, and itty bitty bit of racism, she would be such a loveable character for me. and the screen time would have been fantastic!!! get that old racist ww2 veteran off my screen, give me the christian mom who’d commit war crimes for her kids ☝️

(i’m not saying one of shirley’s problems is her religion. i think that’s supposed to be and IS a big part of her character. her problem about it is how she’s so against every other religion and how she makes so many remarks about those who don’t even believe in it going against it. i js don’t like that. but i love her sm)
