Rex: I'm not a father figure

[ID: A page of a play. It reads as follows, "Theseus: Stop. Give me your hand. I am your friend. / Herakles: I fear to stain your clothes with blood. / Theseus: Stain them, I don't care." End text.]
Herakles - Euripides (Tr. Anne Carson)
lightfaithed:
Anakin was very good at this. Back when Anakin’s valiant attempts at growing his own beard had failed, Obi-Wan had thaught him how to shave properly. Obi-Wan didn’t fear him nicking him for a single moment. Rather, he was unsure how he felt to be looked at without the beard again. It had served as a bit of a barrier. Like a visible sign: look, I am the Master here. It was ridiculous, he knew it. If facial hair was the only thing making him feel in charge in their dynamic, then they had a problem. He was afraid of admitting that too.
But Anakin had changed in the recent months. He still had his rebellious streak, liked to challenge Obi-Wan’s decisions, sometimes even in front of others. But at the end of the day, he felt like Anakin was interested in his opinions when it counted. When they were in danger or engaged in combat. Maybe losing his beard now, letting Anakin see his age, was a good idea. A little bit of honesty, injected into their relationship. The truth was that he needed Anakin’s help as much as Anakin needed his, that Obi-Wan learned as much from Anakin as Anakin learned from him.
Being scrutinized like this made his cheeks redden. This was another downside, the beard had hidden his smaller blushes easily. He reached up to brush his fingers over his tender, shaved skin. “It reminds you of what? Do you really like it?” He turned away to look at himself in the mirror. It was a jarring sight, even for himself. He had gotten so used to the beard and he almost feared if he looked at Anakin, he would see a small boy again.
No, when he met Anakin’s gaze after turning back around, Anakin was a tall young man and Obi-Wan couldn’t be any prouder of him. “I hope you’re right, Anakin. This may be too little too late, but we must try. And thank you, that was some very good shaving.”
He removed the last few traces of soap with the towel and then put his outer tunic back on again. “I say we give it another try. Worst case we come back here and truly fly back to Coruscant to do the walk of shame into the temple.” Without his beard. Which would be what he deserved if they truly failed this time. “I suggest you go first, I go behind you and we try not to draw too much attention until we’re back at the room where they met us.”
Anakin weighed up briefly whether or not to mention the fleeting thought. In the end, he thought that being honest and sharing his thoughts with Obi-Wan was better than keeping things bottled up. He and Obi-Wan had both been guilty of it before, and that never ended well. Anakin inclined his head a little to the side. ‘It reminds me of when Master Qui-Gon was alive,’ he said. Then, quickly moving on, he brushed past Obi-Wan to glimpse out of a vent at the empty hangar beyond their ship. ‘You were more fun back then,’ he couldn’t help but add, glancing over his shoulder with a dry but playful smirk. ‘I agree, Master. But until we reach the... albeit relative diplomatic immunity of another audience with the King himself, I think you really ought to disguise yourself. You could just be another ambassador, coming to help me negotiate for my Master’s safety. I bet when they evacuated their embassies some of those old dignitaries left some cloaks and uniforms behind.’ He cast his mind back to the map he’d studied in Master Nu’s mission files. It still bothered him that the council had made him study the whole bureaucratic superstructure of this stupid planet and failed to mention once that beards like the one Obi-Wan had worn to every damn meeting in that very council chamber were a surefire death sentence. ‘If I remember correctly, the Mandalorian embassy is just across that main corridor from here. And the Alderaanian embassy is next to it. We’d just have to sneak you across somehow… I could come up with a distraction.’
‘You’re correct soldier, you no longer have a general. All of them have perished. But what you do have is a Supreme Commander of the Imperial Forces. You belong to the Galactic Empire now. There are new rules you will be wise to familiarise yourself with. I can assist you.’
Vader took a further step towards Fox. He needed to pull the clone into line for self-preservation as much as to re-assert his position in their… relationship. It wouldn’t do for a Sith lord to be taking orders from a guards’ commander, a clone no less (he felt a tug of resistance from the memory of Anakin Skywalker, which balked at this casual ideology, but quickly smothered it). And he needed to shut down Fox’s suspicions about what he was doing in the Temple. If the guards attempted to seize the holocron from him, they would know it existed, would know that Vader had it. And word would almost certainly get back to the Emperor. No. This had to stop now.
He used a subtle flicker of the force to knock the blaster from Fox’s hand, and remained at close quarters. ‘I can feel your resistance,’ he murmured; in truth, he didn’t even need the force as a telltale. After fighting together for so long, he could read Fox’s body language like a book. ‘I don’t advise you try to maintain it. What do you intend to do, Marshall Commander?’

Darth Vader: Anakin is dead, I killed him, so leave you weak old man—
Obi-Wan: Alright, goodbye then, Darth.

It comes to him at night, every night. The black glass sad, scorching, sweltering. The heat of the place, overwhelming, all consuming. The fire, the lava. Anakin asking him to join him. Everything in his entire being screaming no, and yet…doing it anyway. Setting down his lightsaber, hands raised in surrender. Anything to bring sense to the madness, anything to pull Anakin back from the edge. He’d had time to send Padme away, carry her gently into the ship and set the destination, only a lingering hope that the autopilot would see her safely on a journey where her life would no longer be in danger. Dead, to Anakin. The child, too. A cruel ploy, but the only work around. And then, a reunion with his padawan. Sweat dripping down his face, his spine. Hair damp with it. “Join me, Master.” But he’s not his master anymore, is he? He’s pledged himself to a darker one, to a Sith lord.
The dream shifts to the scream caught in his throat, Anakin kneeling, saying the words on the holo. And sometimes, if he’s lucky, that’s when he wakes. Before it gets worse, before it turns to more recent adventures. His old lightsaber, gone. A new one, dripping in blood, bled from a fleeing Jedi. On his hands, the evidence of his crime. Glee in Palpatine’s voice. Earnest in Anakin’s. FInd a Jedi, kill them, and take their kyber. Week ago, he’d done just that. The Jedi had known him, known his face. Hero of the Clone Wars. He had begged. Anakin had watched on while Obi-Wan cut him down. What other choice did he have? He must convince Palpatine of his loyalties, to stay close to Anakin, to continue toward his goal. Bringing Anakin back. Tonight is no different, and after hours of tossing and turning, he sits up abruptly in his bed, and breathing heavily, damp with sweat, takes in his dark surroundings. It’s just himself, and Anakin.
Anakin, who is sleeping a few feet away, more peacefully than he had in all his time as a solider. They’re on the hunt for a Sith artifact for his master. Their master. Obi-Wan hopes they don’t find it. Still….it’s time to get up. The purple blue sky of the planet is lightening with one of it’s three suns, and Obi-Wan couldn’t go back to sleep if he tried. “Anakin,” He says, raspy at first. He tries again. “Anakin, it’s time to get up.” Once he might have playfully harassed his young padawan into waking but there is little playfulness in him any longer. Anakin does not seem to notice, does not seem to see, the toll it’s all taking on him. Good. He mustn’t. He pulls back the covers of his bedroll and stands, glancing over at the other man.

Anakin was fast asleep. He had slept through Obi-Wan’s tossing and turning, through the rain that seethed against the transparisteel casement and drenched the sticky loam. Now, high above the black sand shoreline, a few minutes before the first sunrise that swelled beneath the horizon, the only sound was of distant thunder behind the dim silhouettes of volcanic mountains that Anakin knew reminded Obi-Wan of a different planet. Apparently it reminded them both of it. Obi-Wan’s voice trembled between the worlds of conscious and un-conscious, and Anakin’s reaction manifested before his eyes opened. His hand shot out to grab Obi-Wan’s wrist. Dark power bore down with his grip. His heartbeat hastened beneath the pale uncovered skin of his chest, on which the scars from that night still stung like unwisely acquired tattoos from some port in the Outer Rim.
When his eyes opened a second later, tinged with yellow, he could only stare at Obi-Wan in silence, whilst reality came back to him. They were not fighting. Anakin did not have to kill him anymore. One might have thought he was tormented by guilty nightmares. But what still troubled Anakin wasn’t a desire for light, but a desire for more darkness. He had been wrong about what the dark side would feel like. He had thought it would be, but the night that had fallen after the Republic was not deep nor dark enough for him to hide in. And to make it worse, Obi-Wan was still here. Watching his every move. Yes, Kenobi had joined him - but Anakin had not just forgotten the betrayal of those few weeks preceding the fall of the Republic. Obi-Wan had not trusted him, just like the rest of the council. He had been jealous. Secretive. Anakin had not forgotten. Even now, Obi-Wan had been hiding himself from Anakin in the Force. Standing guard over his vulnerability, he’d assumed at first. But it was beginning to bother him… another hint at the fact that Obi-Wan didn’t trust him.
His devised solution, when he looked at Obi-Wan sometimes and wondered - how the perfect Jedi, the benevolent hero of the Republic - was standing so composedly in the equipage of a Sith, was to tempt to Obi-Wan, whenever a subtle opportunity arose. To test his reactions by showing weakness in himself. If Obi-Wan slipped up… commiserated, comforted him with admissions of regret of his own. Then Anakin would know.
His eyes cut across to the corner, and dropping Obi-Wan’s wrist without so much as an acknowledgement, he rose just in time to cross the room and answer the incoming holo that would give them their orders. The flickering, green-hued figure of Sidious filled the silence with the low rumble of his voice, and Anakin listened to the missive on one knee, as the Emperor liked them both to do. ‘Yes, my Master.’ Anakin isolated the final word with emphasis, and when the holo’s light crackled out, he turned to fix Obi-Wan with a look. Perhaps he hadn’t been visible in the background, but still, Vader found Obi-Wan’s pride distinctly irritating. He had done for a while now.
‘You look uncomfortable, Obi-Wan,’ Anakin twitched an eyebrow. ‘Is something bothering you?’

Out of the roar of the wind and the shingle of ash and snow, Lord Vader appeared on footsteps soft as a child’s. His skin was stained with blood and sweat, his gaze never faltered from Kenobi crouching on the ground before him, but it was just Anakin. All the vaingloriousness of Sith Lords suddenly forgotten, dissolved into the force. After all, it was of no use down here, just the two of them. Their bond was thin as gossamer, Anakin could feel it so clearly; he could almost see it settling around his master like a bluish halo; illuminating this lightless planet where Obi-Wan had washed up. But Anakin would always find him. ‘Did you think I had forgotten about you, Master?’ he asked, with a hint of a smile tugging at the wick of his mouth. When Obi-Wan did not respond in the way he’d expected, Anakin’s smile faltered slightly, but the yellowish shadow behind his eyes still glowed. ‘It’s okay, Master. The Emperor knows you are loyal to him. I told him myself. No one will harm you. Come with me.’
