One thing Goo left behind after his death was a seemingly endless silence. Imagine waking up one day without seeing his silly antics or hearing his unfunny jokes. In the past, you would have protested and kissed him to shut him up for your own peace of mind. But now, you'd do anything to listen to Goo ramble on all day by your side.
You didn't cry during the funeral ceremony, even when the body entered the crematorium, you just stared at the door in front of you with a blank stare.
Gun was by your side that day. He didn't cry when he saw his former partner's face for the last time. But the emptiness in his eyes behind his sunglasses didn't lie to his feelings. If there was one person as devastated as you were when Goo was gone forever, it was Gun Park. He didn't offer you any excessive comfort. He just reminded you to rest and take care of yourself during the days-long funeral. And Gun gave you one last light pat on the shoulder before he disappeared.
Your lips still managed a small smile as people came to offer their condolences. On the outside, you looked strong, but your eyes couldn't lie. They were red and looked very tired because you had been holding back your tears in front of so many people. Even when Crystal hugged you, it was her who was crying, not you.
Your tears only fell a moment after you returned to your house and closed the door behind you. Then your body seemed to give up on supporting all the incredible pain you felt from the moment you heard the news of your lover's death from Samuel until the moment you were finally alone in a place where his shadow filled every corner of the room in your shared apartment. Your legs weakened, and you fell to your knees before you even took a single step out the front door. Your sobs broke out, accompanied by your hoarse voice calling Goo's name over and over again, as if, in your mind, if you did that, Goo would magically be able to return to your arms, and not the square frame with his photo and a black ribbon wrapped around it.
âGoo⌠please, where are you?â
Your voice slowly began to weaken and turned into small sobs between your gasps for breath. You didn't realize when your eyes began to close and take you into the subconscious, without you moving from where you cried last night. You woke up with the cold air of the floor starting to gnaw at your bones. Your eyes were swollen and red from letting out the tears you had been holding back for days. Your throat felt sore from your screams calling Goo's name non-stop. Your head felt like it was going to explode at that moment.
Strangely, your brain seems to have recorded all your daily habits. So, after that, you go to take a shower, get dressed, force yourself to eat because your body is already protesting due to lack of nutrition, then go to work as usual. It's not that you're not grieving, but it feels like you'll just cry all day if you choose to stay at home and stare at every corner where Goo once was. Your heart won't be able to handle it, and you'll start thinking stupid things that will make you (and even Goo) curse yourself later.
At first, people looked at you with pity and compassion, and tried to comfort you, who had just lost your loved one forever. Then, people began to think you were strong as you continued your days as usual.
Unbeknownst to them, every night you still hold Goo's picture frame and hug it while crying. They don't know how hard it is for you not to wake up with a huge emptiness in your chest. They also don't know how every night you pray to whoever holds the throne above to bring back your beloved man in some form.
Gun and Crystal occasionally checked on you. Not out of pity or a sense of responsibility, which had never really been theirs. But deep down, they wanted to help Goo take care of you temporarily. They could already imagine how fussy Goo would be if he were still here and saw you in such a precarious state without anyone to look after you.
You never went to his columbarium after placing his ashes there, even after months of his death.
Your life goes on without you realizing it because your brain and body have already memorized it all. You wake up in the morning with a tightness in your chest. From noon until evening, you're in the office, working, replying to emails, writing reports, and answering the usual small talk from those around you. At night, you'll look for one of his belongings, like a watch, hold it, and then your shoulder will shake again until exhaustion takes you to dreamland.
In fact, you haven't had a dream in months. Then, one night, your brain plays a trick on you and sends you into a dream you hope you'll never wake up from.
The warm sunlight hit your face and made you squint as you opened your eyes. A gentle breeze caressed your loose hair. When your eyes finally opened, you were in a place you knew all too well. It was your living room, with a window overlooking the open sky.
âBaby?â
You froze at the nickname.
It's not that you're scared. But your brain needs time to process what you just heard. It's been a while since you last heard that voice.
You slowly turned your body.
Goo was standing behind you, one hand in his trouser pocket. He stood casually, just as you remembered. His signature lazy smile tugged at the corner of his lips. His eyes gazed warmly at you.
He looked healthy. Not as pale as you last remembered. There were no wounds on his body. He wasn't wearing a white robe with invisible wings behind him, as people had described. He was wearing his favorite blue suit.
âGooâŚ?â You hesitantly called his name.
A second later, you ran quickly towards him and threw your body into his arms until Goo almost fell backwards.
âWoah, easy there,â Goo laughed softly, âso eager to see me, huh?â
Hearing his laughter again sent your thoughts into a mess. Your hands gripped the back of his jacket tightly. Your voice came out half laughing, half sobbing, "Yeah, it must be a dream. It must be a dream..."
You kept reciting those words like magic. Or rather, you hoped that they were true, and that the Goo standing before you was still alive and not just a figment of your memory.
You raised your head to look into his eyes. You smiled while fresh tears still streaming down your cheeks, "Yeah, it must have been just a dream, right, Goo?"
Goo understood what you meant. His lazy smile wavered for a moment.
He gently cupped your cheeks and brought your faces closer. He kissed your eyelids in turn, then your forehead. Goo showered you with soft kisses from the top of your head to your entire face. And in between, he apologized, "I'm sorry, baby."
His voice was low and heavy, as if it was full of regret.
Your body was shaking violently at that moment because it felt like Goo was giving you the answer you least wanted to receive from your question to him earlier.
âHow could youââ Your voice was hoarse as you said it. You couldn't even finish your sentence.
âI know,â Goo replied while gently stroked your cheeks.
âDo you want to leave me alone that badly?â
Goo shook his head slowly, âItâs not like that.â
âBut you left me, right?â Your voice trailed off before continuing, âSo, what am I going to do now? What would I do without you?â
The question Goo had been waiting for finally came. He knew you'd ask something like this. It was the question that broke his heart to pieces.
Goo slowly tucked the hair that was covering your face behind your ear. He gently tilted your chin up so you would look at him.
âBaby, look at me,â he asked gently.
You looked up at him through tear-stained eyes.
âI know youâve been painfully trying every day,â Goo took a deep breath before continuing, âI know you still like to cry over my photo at night. Still like to sleep on my side of the bed.â
Goo continued his speech.
âAnd you know what? Youâve done well, baby. You can still wake up and go about your days quite well. Even though you havenât made peace with the situation, youâre still kind to yourself. And Iâm proud of you because of that,â Goo kissed your forehead at the end of his sentence.
Your face crumpled again, ungraceful. Your lips trembled violently. You shook your head vigorously before speaking, âIt feels empty, Goo. I feel like thereâs something wrong with me.â
Now Goo's eyes were smiling at you. However, they were also filled with sadness and regret, as if he was still holding back so much he wanted to do for you.
After a while, Goo replied, âThereâs nothing wrong with you, baby.â
You replied, a little annoyed, âBut I feel like Iâm getting more and more broken every day!â
Goo's hand moved down from your cheek to your wrist and held it tightly. He gave it a few gentle squeezes before replying, "Broken things don't mean you don't deserve to live and to be loved again."
It was like someone was squeezing your heart. Even though you know this is just an illusion played by your mind, the pain is so real, you refuse to believe it's not reality.
But well, Goo is still Goo. Even if he's just a projection of your memories, his playful nature hasn't disappeared, even in times like this. But maybe that's just what you need right now.
He then gently pinched your cheek. âDonât say things like that again. You can still love other things. You can also fall in love again if you meet another good man.â Goo sighed dramatically before continuing his sentence with a slight grumble, âUghh, but maybe Iâll be jealous⌠a little.â
You chuckled softly at his lame joke, âAre you sure itâs just a little?â
Hearing that, Goo then dramatized the situation by pretending to be surprised and clutching his chest, "Huhâdon't provoke me. Just be thankful I have no intention of cursing an imaginary guy who might not exist."
You both paused for a moment before bursting out laughing simultaneously.
âThere,â he mumbled softly, âthat suits you more.â
Your laughter slowly died down, and you suddenly felt like crying again. But before you could, Goo had already distracted you.
"Can you promise me one thing?" Goo asked carefully.
You nodded quickly, âWhatever it is, I can try.â
âThenâŚâ Goo trailed off for a moment before continuing, âPlease stay alive. Iâm not asking you to forget me. Please live because you loved me.â
You fell silent, listening to his request. You studied his face intently, as if trying to capture his face for the last time, knowing that Goo would be gone by the time you opened your eyes.
Goo pulled you back into his arms, which you immediately returned with a tight hug. Then Goo whispered into your ear, âSo, donât make that face again, okay? It doesnât suit my girl.â
Goo kissed the top of your head one last time before you felt the world around you fade away. So did Goo's warmth in your embrace.
âNoâŚâ you gripped Gooâs arm desperately, âNo, no. Please, donât leave me yet.â
Goo gave you one last smile as if he said goodbye, âDonât be eager to follow me. Iâm not going anywhere here.â
âI love you.â
Then you woke up gasping for breath.
The darkness of your bedroom replaced the atmosphere of the living room where you had just spoken with Goo. Your hands instinctively sought warmth on the side of your bed, only to find it cold and untouched. That's when your thoughts returned to reality.
You pulled the blanket tightly around you. Your body curled up and began to tremble violently. You wanted to scream, but no sound came out. You hugged your frail body, which could still feel the warmth of Goo's embrace from your dreams.
It hurts so much.
It's not that dreams are cruel, but quite the opposite. They're very nice, as if they're giving you something to keep moving forward and not being trapped by the shadows of the past anymore.
After the day Goo appeared in your dream, you began visiting his columbarium regularly, almost every day. At first, you still cried. But gradually, the tears turned into your voice, telling him about your day, as if Goo himself were there in front of you, not just a remnant of him.
Then, a year later, you still visit him, but not as often as before. From daily to once a week. Not because you've forgotten Goo, but because you've begun to accept the situation and try to live with it.
You sometimes bump into Gun there. It turns out he sometimes visits places like that too. He just casually asks how you're doing and then leaves after making sure you're okay. Crystal sometimes accompanies you there between her busy schedule. You're very grateful for that, but you still assure her that you're fine and won't worry her anymore.
Time continues to pass as if it doesn't care about the people living in it.
But time also heals things that no amount of medicine can cure, because the wounds are invisible. Your inner wounds are no exception.
Ten or five years later, the universe brings another good soul into your life. It doesn't happen suddenly. It happens naturally and gradually.
A kind and stable man who isn't jealous or trying to compete with someone who's no longer in this world. A man who listens to your past stories with ease without childish jealousy.
One day, he asked out of curiosity, with no other motive, âSo, who is Goo to you now?â
You answer with a small smile, âHe was the most valuable experience of my life. A page of my life that I will carry with me until I die."
And the conversation will stop there, because he knows everyone has a moment in their life that will leave a mark forever.
You saying that doesn't mean you don't love your current partner. Goo was right, you can still love someone again. But it will be a different kind of love than what you and Goo had before. However, that doesn't change the fact that your current relationship is also full of affection.
And you also kept the promise you made with Goo in the dream years ago.
You lived happily for a long time until your skin slowly began to wrinkle. Your firm voice became soft and somewhat slow. Your hair turned gray. You also began to lose memory in certain ways.
Until one day, when you were eighty years old, you sat in your favorite rocking chair and looked through a photo album of your youth.
Of course, there's a picture of you and Goo in it.
Your wrinkled fingers gently brushed his face in the photo. You wondered, was Goo aging there as much as you were here?
Your question was answered years later when your destiny eventually reached its final point. In your final moments, your mind reeled back memories of your happy moments, and of course, your beloved blonde hair was there too. You left with a peaceful smile on your face, as if you had no more regrets in your life.
Warm sunlight washes over your vision as soon as you try to open your eyes. You're sitting in a vast, seemingly endless field of flowers. A gentle breeze carries strands of your long, black hair as they blow gently. The wrinkles on your skin also disappear, replaced by soft skin that tingles with the tall, swaying grass.
You were still trying to figure out where you were when you heard a familiar voice from behind you.
âTook you long enough.â
You turned your head so fast you almost lost your balance. You recognized the voice from that remnant of your old memories all too well.
Sure enough, it belonged to your beloved Goo Kim.
He leaned casually under a willow tree, one hand tucked into his trouser pocket. His lazy posture remained the same. And what stunned you was his unchanged appearance. Goo looked as youthful, handsome, and beautiful as the day you first fell in love with him.
He chuckled, seeing you not moving at all from where you were standing, âDo you still want to stay there, or do you want to come here?â
Goo then spread his arms wide. Seeing that, you immediately ran towards him. It wasn't graceful, but you didn't care. Goo nearly fell backward as he embraced you. It felt like dĂŠjĂ vu.
You wrapped your arms around his neck and gripped his shirt tightly as if you were afraid he would disappear again if you loosened your grip even a little. But this time, Goo didn't disappear. He hugged you back tightly. One hand was on your back, pulling you closer to his chest, and the other was on the back of your head, gently stroking your hair.
The warmth of his body now felt so real. You started crying again. This time, not out of sadness, but out of relief. The huge hole in your heart felt like it was slowly closing.
âIâm sorry,â you whispered, âI kept you waiting.â
Goo tightened his hug, âDonât apologize. Iâll be waiting for you no matter how long it takes. Iâm not in a hurry.â
You pulled back slightly to get a better look at his face. Your hands began to touch his hair, his cheeks, his nose, his mouth, as if to confirm that this is real.
Goo let out a soft sigh, like a chuckle, âSee? I'm real, baby.â
Before you could say anything else, Goo had already moved closer to you. Now it was his turn to confirm that you were truly there by kissing your forehead. Then your cheeks. Then your eyelids.
Maybe he got carried away, or maybe he was just teasing you. Goo didn't stop his onslaught of kisses, and each time, the duration got longer and longer, moving from one place to another, until you chuckled and squirmed in his embrace, "Goo, stop it."
âOops. Sorry.â In fact, Goo didnât feel guilty at all.
You hit his arm playfully and rolled your eyes, which were still red from crying earlier.
Ah, he misses your adorable responses when he used to annoy you.
It was only then that he realized that his decades-long wait was finally over. Honestly, time had no meaning here. It felt like it was passing so quickly, but it had actually been quite a while.
Goo remembered the lonely moments when he waited for you here. He stopped counting days after he learned that time is useless here. Believe it or not, Goo Kim, who couldn't sit still for five minutes, for the first time lingered in the same spot where he first arrived. Sometimes he sat in that flower field and just stared at the sky for an unknown amount of time. Sometimes he stood under this willow tree.
He remembered how other people passing by would ask him to go with them, and he'd declined every single one. One time, someone asked him, "Why are you always here?"
And Goo replied enthusiastically, âIâm waiting for someone.â
Remembering that, Goo became sentimental.
But before his emotions could escalate, he did one thing he was very good at, throwing out inappropriately timed jokes.
âOld,â he said suddenly.
You looked at him with a straight face, âCan you NOT.â
Goo laughed at your response, âItâs okay, I like older ones too, princess.â
You pinched his arm, âYou jerk. Who told me to live a long life??â
âMe,â Gooâs eyes filled with tears.
âThank you for keeping your promise.â
You shook your head.
âNo. I should be the one saying thank you. Thank you for believing in me.â
Goo's gaze softened. He let his tears fall now, and you gently wiped them away with your thumb. And you let your tears flow again.
The atmosphere around you was so quiet and peaceful that you could hear each other's heartbeats.
Goo was the first to break the silence and quickly wiped his eyes with the back of his hand.
He walked a few steps forward before turning around and extending one of his hands towards you with an open palm.
âCome on, there's a lot of things I wanna show you.â
You slipped your fingers between his without hesitation. You tilted your head and asked, âWhere?â
A sweet smile spread across Goo's face at this moment.
âHome,â he replied softly, âour home.â
Writing this instead of finishing my assignment lol. Anyway, I'll do James (idol DG) fluff next time (if I have free time to finish my draft, collage are killing me right now đŽâđ¨).
