Found you when your heart was broke I filled your cup until it overflowed Took it so far to keep you close (Keep you close) I was afraid to leave you on your own
I said I'd catch you if you fall And if they laugh, then fuck 'em all (All) And then I got you off your knees Put you right back on your feet Just so you can take advantage of me
The last two years have been a lot of this for me. Thinking that I could save you by filling you up. Thinking I could save you by setting a good example, even if it came at the cost of my social life or wants/needs. Thinking I could create a barrier around you, your heart, your mind, your soul, so that the things that you said hurt you couldn’t do it anymore.
Tell me how's it feel sittin' up there Feeling so high but too far away to hold me You know I'm the one who put you up there Name in the sky Does it ever get lonely? Thinking you could live without me Thinking you could live without me Baby, I'm the one who put you up there I don't know why Thinking you could live without me Live without me Baby, I'm the one who put you up there I don't know why
But what I did instead was put my life on hold to try and create a life with a person who was never fully there, and never fully able to be. There were always excuses; most of them projections. I was abusive. I was mean. I was all of these things that actually... weren’t me at all.
The thing I have learned from all of this? A person will smash a mirror you put in their face. You knew the things you were doing were wrong, mean, and hurtful, but it didn’t matter. The love that I pumped into you and this relationship didn’t matter because you were going to do whatever you wanted anyway, even if that involved manipulation and lying. Accountability was a foreign word.
Gave love 'bout a hundred tries Just running from the demons in your mind Then I took yours and made 'em mine I didn't notice 'cause my love was blind
I had two options: keep my autonomy, leave town on a trip and suffer through the hungover text messages, lying about drinking, lying about being hungover, projection, etc. Or bring you with me and either be embarrassed that you couldn’t socialize for whatever reason (likely because you were sober) or worry that you were anxious and it became my problem. I did not like either option. Your problems became mine. I had to constantly think: is this event going to make her anxious? Is this event going to trigger her because there is alcohol? Will she be able to be present? Can she be that person who she said she was when we first met? The one who was so interested in self-improvement, didn’t drink, loved therapy, had her shit together, etc.
The answer to everything started becoming no.
You don't have to say just what you did I already know I had to go and find out from them So tell me how's it feel
Tell me how's it feel sittin' up there Feeling so high but too far away to hold me You know I'm the one who put you up there Name in the sky Does it ever get lonely? Thinking you could live without me Thinking you could live without me Baby, I'm the one who put you up there I don't know why
And when I tried to create a boundary, you shat all over it. When we broke up and I said we shouldn’t talk because I had already tried to be your person -- your ears, eyes, heart, soul -- you continued to try and push the needle. Push the boundary. Insist you didn’t have any friends. Insist I was the only one who got you. You said we are two people who get each other. You said I was the light of your life. (Of course, this was after telling me any hurtful thing you could and putting the couches on their sides and packing up the toilet paper and light bulbs because you didn’t want me to be able to “use anything you purchased” before I moved out, while you weren’t there.)
You said whatever you had to, manipulative as it could be, to get me to feel badly and entertain your conversation. And then the moment you make a new friend, the moment I tell you something that makes you consider the truth or how you hurt me, you say we need a boundary and shouldn’t talk.
I’m not a fan of this kind of slap in the face.
All I wanted was more than an empty promise or words to fill space. All I wanted was consistency. I tried to keep you in that mind frame, but your brain wouldn’t let you.
I miss feeling like “we’re living in a romantic comedy.” I miss feeling like I had a person, however fleeting that may have been. I miss you. Or who I thought you were. And the thing that kills me is you are now working on the things I’d begged of you. And now someone else will get to benefit from my mirror in your face.
I’m the one who put you up there.
There is nothing more unfair or hurtful than this. Justice and fairness don’t play a role when there isn’t an even playing field. Relationships shouldn’t be politics.
