dean spends a lot of time complaining abt how rioās always ~around but they barely have any scenes together (Clear Sign Theyāre Hanging Out A Lot Offscreen)
the Presence of dean in beth and rioās first two sexual encounters (plus arguably the third too actually, everyone WAS just banging on abt how married beth is)
rio once hid inside an ugly car so he could do a surprise reveal for dean <3

FURTHER!!!!! you only have to scratch the surface of deanās storyline a BIT to find the comp het take and i MAINTAIN a dean coming out storyline could have been GREAT (i mean yes it could also have been terrible) bc it would have GIVEN HIM SOMETHING TO DO which wasnt annoying or boring or both, and itās a way to give the audience something to connect with him abt (and, more crucially, something for annie to connect with him abt.... a dean-annie teamup couldve been just as fun as a beth-stan one tbh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!). and like itās fine...canonās over...iām mostly over this... but like....ok.....if this wasnt the plan then explain to me WHY

26. Who likes to eat healthy/ Who loves junk food?
ooh ok, so this is interesting!
cos we know that beth cooks a lot, and uses (making) food as a way to express care (and guilt). but also that if sheās sad, and doesnāt have other ppl to perform those duties for (and i do think perform is the right word), she stops doing all of that, and dramatically eats depressing lean cuisine meals at the dining table by herself (bc both beth and rio need to moon around like theyāre in an emo music video at all times, apparently).
now *I* would probs describe her lean cuisine stuff as junky, but idk if it exactly falls into the typical category of junk food? particularly bc when annie and ruby are rinsing her for her pathetic dinners, theyāre trying to lure her into a big mac instead. [sidenote: mcdonalds patties are gross, if theyād suggested something edible like bk or kfc i feel like she mightve bitten.]
AND while i think that beth probs has some thoughts abt supplying the kids with healthy food, i dont really think itās at the forefront of her obsession with it? itās more of a display of attention, and i think in direct opposition to the flashback we get of her and annie meeting ruby for the very first time. i donāt think thatās played as beth being resentful at playing provider, or annoyed at having to look after annie, in fact itās almost like itās an adventure? BUT the issue is they literally donāt have groceries at home, and i definitely think that preparing elaborate meals for the family to eat together, creating personalised, detailed lunches for the kids to take to school, and being known as the attendant baking mother, are all things that became important to her bc of not (always?) having such markers of affection from her parent/s growing up.
and then rio definitely seems enthusiastic abt food, but idk that i necessarily getĀ ājunkā (or at least fast) food vibes off of him? firstly, he seems extremely pretentious, and also is clearly a wildly irritating neatfreak. i canāt see him allowing a greasy bag in his car, lol (maybe if the foodās quintuple bagged??? and even then probs not...)
i do think that both beth and rio are probably v pompous abt food, and kinda pious abt their child/ren eating healthily in public, but both have some junk food/s theyāre really into, which theyāre kinda secretive abt. and i think especially in a post-dean scenario where the divorce has happened and beth is getting comfortable with not always having the kids around, sheād start to indulge a lil more with things SHE likes, and thatād include whatever her fave junk food is (again: not a big mac, cos theyāre gross), but in a fun, thrilling way with a big glass of wine, not in a depressing lean cuisine at the dining table alone kind of way. AND i think if beth and rio did get closer, revealing their secret junk food faves to each other would be a big deal bc theyāre both so private and prickly and image-obsessed

27. Who takes a long shower/ Who sings in the shower?Ā
beth definitely takes a long time in the bathroom when she has time for it, but i think sheās more of a bath person than a shower person if she can indulge? (or a sobbing on the floor while leaving the water running person, i suppose.)
and i feel like beth currently isnt a singing in the shower kind of person, and i do find it fascinating that weāve had both annie and ruby singing (and have a sense of their music taste), and we dont really have that for beth, and sheās the main character! and christina can sing!
iām really hopeful that thereās a trajectory where beth comes more into her own and re/discovers her own (music) tastes. feel like beth starting to sing in the shower would be the perfect cap to finally getting dean out of the house for good!!!
given rio apparently has all the time in the world to devote to stalking and dramatics, i assume heās the one taking long showers atm!
and maybe fitzās nugget abt rioās special country club showering wasnt actually foreshadowing shower sex - bethās going to wander in on him singing there and thatās the beginning of the musical episode????!????!!!

deffo beth come on, but i donāt think rioās a bad cook. and i think bethās so used to cooking for other ppl that sheād kind of short circuit over rio cooking for her? so sheād probs think it was better than it was, lol

Okay, so I think I first read this when I was a little tipsy or something and I just absolutely loved it. I went back to it to see if it was as good as I remembered and it TOTALLY is.
It's not...nice? Or soft. And I love that, because it totally captures their dynamic accurately. And yet there's still something incredibly hopeful there.
It's a great look at Beth's guilt and grief and coping mechanisms, and the line about her not being her mother totally slays me.
I absolutely adore the idea of Beth moving out of that house. It must feel like an albatross around her neck, weighted with bad memories.
I don't want to give too many details away but the fact that rio announces his presence to not just Beth, so it can't be imaginary, yet she still avoids confronting it (with kinda twisted but kinda reasonable logic) is just soooo spot on.
And this take on rio (and how annoying Beth still finds him!) is just perfection. Ugh!
And also, maybe a small thing, but I just love this title too?!
I would do a lot for a follow-up, but it stands perfectly on its own, you know? Anyway I think it's amazing, and different, and it should have waaaaaaay more attention!
