Soulciety Receives $250k!
Alameda County Probation has given Soulciety a grant in the amount of $250,000! This grant is to help build the capacity of our organization to better serve re-entry youth within the county.
With this grant, we will be working with consultants that will build our organizational capacity and effectiveness. This includes consultants in project management, organizational development, fund development, and fiscal management. We will be working on restructuring our staff and board, refining the direction of our organization, developing a culture of philanthropy throughout the organization, and we will be developing a fund development plan for our organization’s sustainability.
In 2015, Soulciety received its first capacity building grant from the Thomas J. Long Foundation. The $300,000 grant enabled us to hire an organizational coach, grant writer, accountant, and fiscal advisor. This was a game changer for us, and was instrumental in transforming Soulciety into a more professional and sustainable organization.
We are very grateful for this funding support and we are looking forward to effectively serving more youth that are system-involved.

Soulciety is Looking to Hire a Marketing Consultant!

Soulciety is looking to hire a Marketing Consultant. Soulciety is a growing 501c3 nonprofit organization based in Hayward, CA that conducts a county-funded youth employment program as well as theater and performing arts events. We are looking for someone who is experienced in marketing, promotions, and branding and can take the lead in developing a strong marketing plan to promote Soulciety’s programs and event productions, increase visibility both online and in the community, and to develop our identity. Contract amount commensurate with skills and experience.
Responsibilities
- Create, develop, and implement various marketing strategies - Develop a strong social media strategy to improve the organization’s visibility - Manage a marketing team that will execute numerous marketing tasks within the allotted timeline - Build partnerships with companies, organizations, colleges, high schools, etc. to ensure that the community is aware of Soulciety's programs and event productions and opportunities to get involved - Create content and update the organization's website

Soulciety is hiring a full-time, full charge Accounting Supervisor. Soulciety is a growing 501c3 nonprofit organization based in Hayward, CA that conducts a county-funded youth employment program as well as theater and performing arts events. We are looking for someone who is experienced in non-profit accounting and can be driven to helping our organization achieve its goals. Salary and benefits commensurate with skills and experience.
Requirements
At least 3 years nonprofit accounting experience Relevant college degree from an accredited institution (BS Accounting, Finance, or Business) or equivalent work experience Strong, practical understanding of GAAP and non-profit accounting Experienced and familiar with single audit and OMB 133 requirements for accounting Proficient in Excel, MSOffice, and Quickbooks Online Human Resources experience a plus Ability to multitask and problem-solve with great analytical and communication skills
Responsibilities

What is a Fund Development Strategy and Why We Need One

Soulciety just met with our new consultant, Seth Kaplan, in Ashland, Oregon to develop our fund development strategy!
Fund development is the process by which organizations use fundraising to build capacity and sustainability. It is concerned not only with raising money, but doing so in a way that develops reliable sources of income that will sustain the organization through the realization of its long-term mission and vision. Fund development usually involves building relationships with people and other organizations that will support the charity. It requires a strategic plan that relates funding to the purpose and programs of the organization.Â
So why does Soulciety need that now? As we near our 10 year anniversary later this year, Soulciety is in need of diversifying our funding and developing an organization that is more sustainable. We are learning the importance of creating a culture of philanthropy throughout our organization, from the board to our staff. We are learning that sharing our stories, successes, and challenges is important so that the communities that we serve are aware of the work that we do. We are also learning that building relationships is at the heart of developing a successful fund development strategy, but more importantly, a thriving community-based non-profit organization.
Seth was the Chief of Staff for Alameda County Board of Supervisor Nate Miley. He was also integral in finding the funding for the REACH Ashland Youth Center in San Leandro, CA. Last, he has helped Soulciety in getting the county contracts for our youth employment program since 2011. Needless to say, we are very fortunate to be working with him on building our fund development strategy. Excited to see where this takes us.
Soulciety has just received a City of Hayward grant!

The City of Hayward has just awarded Soulciety a $40k grant for our computer refurbishing program! The program trains system-involved young adults between the ages of 18-24 to refurbish computers and provides an entry point for a career in the technology sector. Hundreds of used and refurbished computers will also be donated to low-income, system-involved youth and young adults.
In July 2016, Soulciety received innovation funds in the amount of $13k from Alameda County Social Services Agency for our computer refurbishing program. These two grants will help to bring computer education to low-income communities in southern Alameda County.

Soulciety’s Co-Executive Director, Ron Carino, just received a 2-year executive fellowship with Leaderspring worth $30,000! The objective of the fellowship is to develop nonprofit executive directors in the San Francisco Bay Area into effective leaders for their organizations and communities.
Leaderspring's theory of change is if the leadership of a nonprofit is strengthened, the agency’s capacity is strengthened, enabling it to deliver improved and expanded services. Ron is part of a cohort of 15 executives in the East Bay that was accepted into this fellowship, where they will share evidence-based practices and resources and will establish a lifelong network of Bay Area nonprofit leaders.
In regards to receiving the fellowship, Ron said, “ It is an honor and privilege for me to take part in Leaderspring’s fellowship program and network. I am looking forward to learning from other leaders in our community and to develop Soulciety into a more effective and innovative organization for our youth.”

Soulciety’s Building Computer Labs in the Philippines Just got back from Bohol, Philippines working on Soulciety’s Bridge Program. It was an amazing feeling to once again touch the land, breathe the air, and reconnect with good friends. In the past few weeks, I’ve met with school staff, consultants, coordinators, and contractors to put together plans to build computer labs and to develop computer literacy and performing arts curriculums. We’ve identified 3 high schools where we will be building the computer labs and teaching these programs. The focus is to improve the educational and employment outcomes for youth through computer literacy, creative development and employment.
Soulciety is participating in the East Bay Community Foundation’s one-day fundraising campaign on May 3rd called East Bay Gives. Our goal is to raise $20,000 for The Bridge Program during the midnight-to-midnight fundraiser. Please help us to spread the word to your friends and families. Soulciety launched our new website!
For the past few months, a project team worked together to develop a new website for Soulciety that would better represent the work that we do. We finally released it over the weekend!

Soulciety’s YEP has provided 745 internships and has paid over $900k in payroll to our youth!
Soulciety started out as a performing arts organization. In 2011, we were given the opportunity to run a youth employment program providing job trainings and placement to system-involved youth and little did we know that we would make such an impact through this program.
Since then, Soulciety’s Youth Employment Program (YEP) has provided 745 paid internships to youth and of this, 662 were system-involved. They worked a total of 79,349.50 hours and every hour was paid. In total, we paid them $907,595.
Soulciety has become an emerging leader in workforce development in Alameda County. What makes us successful is that our program coordinators (or job coaches) are relentless in getting our youth to overcome the barriers which keep them from achieving employment and educational goals. Our program coordinators go out of their way to go to the schools and homes to get youth back on track, they advocate for their youth in court, and they give them continuous support through thick and thin.
Thanks to our YEP team, funders, partners and worksites who have made such a difference in so many of our youth’s lives.
Soulciety receives $300k from the Thomas J. Long Foundation!
Last year, Soulciety received a phone call from program officers at the Thomas J. Long Foundation. They wanted to schedule a meeting to learn about our services. It turned out to be an amazing meeting, and a few months later, we received another phone call. One of the program officers informed us that the foundation was giving Soulciety a $300,000 capacity-building grant! To say the least, we were in shock.
Fast forward nine months later and we’re seeing how this grant has been a game changer for us. Here is how these funds have helped Soulciety to grow:
Restructured the staff to better streamline processes and to be more efficient with our programming. Developed a management team consisting of a youth services manager, young adult services manager, and contracts administrative manager. Recruited and trained board of directors in governance. Hired consultants/contractors for finance, fund development, accounting, human resources, and an organizational coach.
We are also currently working with our management team, board of directors, and consultants to develop a strategic plan for Soulciety’s near future. It’s incredible to see how hard work and determination can bring about so many opportunities.
We are very thankful to the Thomas J. Long Foundation for believing in our work and for investing in our community.
Soulciety Receives Funding from the National Endowment for the Arts!
Soulciety is very proud to announce that we have been awarded a grant from the prestigious National Endowment for the Arts to develop our next theatrical production! We are honored to receive this $75k grant which will elevate our performing arts programming to new heights. Our next production entitled “Unincorporated” will explore current social issues such as youth incarceration, racism, and social inequity. Soulciety is further developing The Bridge Program as we continue to help those that are in need in the rural parts of the Philippines.
We are currently looking for Businesses, Schools, Organizations, or any other groups to donate their used desktop and laptop computers!
Soulciety has partnered with the California Technological Center and The Stride Center to refurbish donated computers to not only decrease the eWaste in the Bay Area, but to recycle equipment for the youth in the Philippines to be prepared to compete with an advancing global society. Our goal is to connect these students to the vast wonders of the world and allow them to believe that any dream is possible.
