Do you ever get that horrible secondhand embarrassment while reading a fic so you switch tabs for a second or scroll across your home screen looking at the way your apps are placed before it's safe to return?

“What transness and especially a pre-transition dysphoria actually feels like, to me at least, is much more internal and intangible. The language that I use to try to talk about it is language that I'm borrowing from the surrealism of David Lynch — the dreamlike nature of his films — or the body horror of David Cronenberg.” — JANE SCHOENBRUN, I Saw the TV Glow writer/director (x)

so much of the horror genre is informed by the metaphor of queer/transness as monstrousness. especially emphasizing the amount of horror that depends on the audience's repulsion at seeing a human body changing into a new, other body. I Saw the TV Glow is about the horror of NOT transitioning. the horror of static. the horror of looking into yourself and being terrified of what you see. the horror of seeing who you are and choosing to do nothing about it. the horror of looking away. and by god is it terrifying.

Someone beautiful and powerful.
Someone buried alive and suffocating to death.
Very far away,
on the other side of the television screen.

I almost wish there weren't a holiday season. I know nobody likes me. Why do we have to have a holiday season to emphasize it?

Nicholas seems to be considering really hard whether he does something to asleep EJ or not here. The way he looks at the camera, what a priceles menace. And how clueless EJ looks!
