Kayce Dutton 2x04: Only Devils Left
Luke Grimes in El Camino Christmas + Yellowstone
Isabelle found she didn’t mind his teasing. It was better than awkward silence—or starting off on the wrong foot. And honestly, he wasn’t wrong. Her smile came small but genuine, almost bashful.“Dessert for breakfast is kind of my specialty,” she admitted, feeling as though she had revealed a secret, her cheeks filled with some warmth. “I love baking, cooking too. I always have.” Her grandmother had never approved of her spending so much time in the kitchen with the help, but that’s where her love of cooking began.
The turn their conversation had taken reminded Isabelle why they couldn’t just sign the agreement and get on with it. These people certainly knew what they were doing when they said a minimum of three months. And even then, Isabelle doubted that three months was enough time to truly know someone. They still had plenty to learn about one another.
Now it was her turn in the hot seat and that was only fair. He shared the same concern she did, which was completely understandable. In fact, Isabelle would’ve been more concerned if he hadn’t met her with the same doubt. She waited until their eyes locked, and with an unwavering certainty, answered, “I may be ‘young’ but I’ve always dreamt of being a young mother, and just like you, I refuse to let time pass by. ‘Life’s too short’. I want this, more than I can put into words and more than you can imagine, probably. I know you might think I have a whole life ahead of me, but that’s not exactly guaranteed, for any one of us. Is it so wrong of me to be this certain about what I want the way you are? If— ” and it was a big ‘if’ —“If I happen to fall in love along the way, I believe the right person will come to accept the situation. Perhaps they may struggle at first but eventually they will. Don’t you think?” Maybe that was wishful thinking. Had she been convincing enough for him?
Speaking of love, Isabelle had wanted to ask if he had ever been in love with anyone before. It seemed more than appropriate, given that they both wanted to start a family, together at that, although she was quite hesitant to even touch upon the subject, knowing it meant most likely having to divulge her past relationships too. It was hard to broach such a personal topic with a stranger. In all honesty, Isabelle was content with not knowing about Ethan’s past wherever his love life was involved. Sooner or later, the truth would come out.
Her gaze wandered over to the wide, open kitchen window, a gentle breeze slipping in, carrying with it the sweet scent of a late summer morning. As soon as the thought of going outside for a stroll crossed her mind, she remembered Ethan’s condition and decided against mentioning the idea. Assuming she’d be welcomed back to his place, there would be plenty of time to explore the area.
“You any good?” Ethan wasn’t much of a cook. He had learned the basics from his mother. There was once a time when he was attached to her like a piece of gum stuck on the bottom of a shoe. The poor, sweet woman was patient with him as a curious boy when he wanted to help her out in the kitchen, before he grew older and his interests changed from hanging with his mother to riding horses and dirt bikes. The fond memories came flooding back to him though, his expression softening for a fleeting moment.
He doesn’t know her from Adam, but he somehow trusts every word that comes out of her mouth to be honest and true. Either that or she’s the best liar in all of Roanoke County, and he’s fool enough to believe her. It was always the quiet ones to watch out for, wasn’t it? Either way, the man doesn’t have anything else left to lose. If it doesn’t work out between them, he’d end up alone again and he’s already used to being alone. Might as well throw his hat into the ring and see what comes of it. “How about we… cross that bridge when we get to it, if we do. No point in worrying over the future, or things outside our control.”
As her gaze turns to the window, his attention shifts with hers. A knock at the back door kills the silence in the air, and Georgia, his sister, walks through the door. Her knock was only to signal her arrival, not asking permission to enter the place. “Good mornin’! Oh, I’m sorry - didn’t realize you were having company today, Ethan.”
Even though her tone sounds surprised, he knows she’s lying through her teeth. He told her what damned day it was and not to bother coming over to check on him. Guess curiosity got the better of her. He shoots her a sideways glance. “Georgia, this is Isabelle. Isabelle, Georgia. Since you’re here now, Isabelle wants to take a look around outside.”
She had hardly expected a warm reception from Ethan. In fact, his reaction was precisely what Genevieve had imagined it would be after being absent for so long. He hadn’t changed in that regard. And although the words immediately stung, for the moment it was enough that he was even willing to speak to her. With a weight sitting far too comfortably on her chest, and fully aware he hadn’t exactly invited her to sit, she slid into the booth across from him anyway, hoping he wasn’t about to shut her down before they even had a chance to talk. “I know it did…” God, she resented that fact so damn much. With every fiber of her being, she hated that it was the truth. There was a knot in her throat. The words were there, waiting to be uttered, but it felt impossible to get them out without feeling as though she had just swallowed a lump of dry sand.
When she was met with nothing but silence, Gen continued, “I wish I coulda’ come back sooner, a whole lot sooner, but I couldn’t come back ‘til I knew I wasn’t just gonna waltz back into Willy’s life only for me leave him all over again. For a while, I couldn’t trust myself there. And I wouldn’t do that to him, Ethan. I’ve already done enough damage to him. You understand that, don’t you?” Genevieve clung tightly to her own promise, the one she had made when she had said her last goodbye to the both of them, that she wouldn’t hurt their son by leaving him ever again. Twice in his young life was already too many times. “I wouldn’t be here now if I wasn’t sure I was really ready. Even if you don’t believe me, I’m not goin’ anywhere unless I have Willy right by side.”
This wasn’t easy. Dealing with somebody like Genevieve never was. She hurt him too many times, more times than he could count. She messed him up for anyone else to come in and patch him up. No one tried to, either. To this day, folks still brought up the hell she put him through, how much he had changed since. Then again, he had let her walk all over him like a welcome mat. As much as everyone liked to blame her, maybe the fault was his own.
He doesn’t know what to say anymore. They’ve been here before. It’s always the same song and dance with her. How was he supposed to believe history wouldn’t repeat itself? “Well, you’re right about that - I don’t believe you. What makes this time different than the last, huh? Or the time before that?”
Feeling peeved, he pulls out money out of his wallet to cover his tab and rises from his seat. “We’re not doin’ this in here.” If she thought she was gonna waltz back into their child’s life that easy, Gen had another thing coming. The man had many words to say to her but it wouldn’t be right for him to lecture her in a bar. Too many eyes around to witness him scolding her. “C’mon, follow me.” Sets the bill on the table then walks off, not looking back to check if she’s behind. She’d follow.

The man sits at the far end, hunched over a half-empty glass of bourbon, staring at nothing in particular. The place is quiet, save for the low hum of a country tune on the jukebox and the soft clink of glasses being washed behind the bar. Same old joint as it’s always been and will always be, most likely. Smells like stale smoke and stories folks don’t tell each other sober. It’s like any other evening, except it’s not.
The door swings open and with it, warm rain rolls in with her, coat clinging to her shoulders. The second he lays eyes on her, the world just... stops, including himself without realizing it. His whiskey’s half-raised to his lips, but his hand’s still as stone. All the noise around him dulls to nothing but the steady pounding of his own heartbeat. It’s been years without a word of her, not even a phone call for William on his birthday or a gift tucked in the mail for Christmas. Nothing.
He’d waited at first. Hell, he waited longer than a man should. Kept his ringer on loud, checked the mailbox every damn day like a fool, told himself maybe she was just figuring things out. And now, out of the blue, here she was. When their eyes finally met, all he could say was, “Took you long enough.” Before taking a drink and placing the glass down again.
