Cylinder vase
Maya Late Classic Period A.D. 750â780
Object Place: Ikâ polity, El PetĂ©n, Guatemala
The Hero Twin Yax Balam holds a large plate containing the jadeite jewelry of the Maize god. His twin brother Hun Ajaw carries a large bundle supported by a cord around his neck. A woman, identified in the adjacent hieroglyphic phrase as a lady of the Ikâ polity, presents shell jewels to an eroded dancing figure who is likely the Maize god. The dedicatory phrase around the vaseâs rim ends with the name phrase âYajaw Teâ Kâinich, divine lord of the Ikâ polity.â Short hieroglyphic phrases in the scene record the date (13 Eb? 9 Tzek), specify the nature of the event, and name the depicted figures.
The Maize god-perched on a saurian (a serpent-like, mythical being) symbolizing the supernatural realm-dons jewelry prior to ascending from the Underworld.

Since then he has developed a particular and passionate interest in recording the wildlife sounds of animals, habitats and atmospheres from around the world. As a freelance recordist for film, TV & radio, Chris Watson specializes in natural history and documentary location sound together with track assembly and sound design in postproduction.
