Day 15:
Floral
so this fanart is so beautiful it inspired me to write a little ficlet based off of it. i hope that’s okay, @krisrix ! this is probably my favourite piece of yours to date.
There must be a smile on Simon’s mouth, even though he’s using everything he has not to show it. The flower petals tickle the backs of his arms, shifting restlessly with his every step towards Baz. Who is still frowning.
Simon can’t really blame him for that. Baz is a fiend for punctuality any day - but today, especially, means something to him. To both of them.
They kissed for the first time, four years ago today. They sneaked back to Pitch manor and sat in front of the fire, and kissed some more. Held hands and talked until the sun came up. They fell asleep together, and they woke up knowing things were different.
Simon knows Baz has all kinds of things planned for today. He’s always been the one out of the two of them to go for grand gestures. Simon usually sticks to making dinner and nearly burning the house down. But he felt like doing something new this year.
He sees Baz’s face change once he gets closer. The frown slips slightly out of place, into a more puzzled look. “Snow, did you put on perfume?”
Simon makes his best confused face. It’s hard. “No? Why?”
“You smell like…” Baz shakes his head. “Roses.”
“Oh, no. That must be from these.” And Simon pulls the bouquet out from behind his back.
It’s a beautiful arrangement. Simon made the trip right into the heart of town to get it, from the florist Baz likes. (Baz has never gotten anything from there, but he’s commented something nice about the display every time they’ve passed it.) The roses are vivid, fresh and abundant - it takes two hands for Simon to hold it properly.
Simon doesn’t think he’s ever seen such a look of surprise on Baz’s face before. His mouth is open. His eyes flick between the flowers and Simon’s face like he can’t decide which one is more astounding.
“Simon…”
Simon’s finally let his smile free. It’s making his cheeks hurt. “Happy anniversary, Baz.”
Baz is kissing him before he can get the flowers out of the way. Simon laughs against his lips and gently pushes him back. “Bouquet! I didn’t pay so much just so you could crush it.”
Baz is shaking his head again. His cheeks are tinted red. He reaches a hand out, and Simon presses the flowers into his hand. “Simon. They’re beautiful.”
“Good,” Simon says. “I’m glad you like them.”
“I love them.”
Simon moves closer and loops an arm around Baz’s shoulder, pulling him in (sideways this time) for a kiss. “I’ll be better about being on time next year, though.”
“Next year,” Baz says. It’s half a playful threat, and half a promise.
More so a promise.
Oh, holy cow 😭 This is amazing…! Thank you!!! 🖤
Baz: THIS IS NOT WHAT I THOUGHT YOU MEANT WHEN YOU SAID YOU WANTED TO GO FOR A RIDE
Simon: This is fun though!
Baz: *screaming*
i mean yeah sex is cool but have you ever read a book where the villain is also the love interest?
I just love that Rainbow Rowell added a character with literally no magic who navigates a world of dangerous supernatural creatures by being Nebraska friendly

Carry On Countdown 2019 - Day 5 - Carry on Prequel
In which Fiona and Ebb dated while they were at Watford and were the ultimate punk/pastel couple.
I drew this for Rainbow and gave it to her at the NY Wayward Son book launch.
I was too nervous to express to her how much her books mean to me, but hopefully a bit of that came through. Thank you for touching my life with your words and your characters, @rainbowrowell These boys have helped me carry on through this very rough patch I’m in, 🖤
Seemed fitting to post this on American Thanksgiving and for the Carry On Countdown!

i wanna see how big we are
Sorry this is so enormous and likely clogging up your feed this morning. Before I forget, ”No one’s seducing a vampire” is still in production. It’s definitely a difficult adaptation (hello 12 panels of victorian bedroom), so it’ll be a while yet before I’m finished with that one. But anyhoo…
About the art: Chapter 62 was the second most requested portion of Carry On for adaptation into a graphic novel format. However, rather than pull swaths of text from the chapter, I decided to zero in on one little snippet:
(His cross is on the other side of the room now.; Snow took care of it himself this time.)
- Baz, Chapter 62, Carry On by Rainbow Rowell
Given how Simon had used the cross earlier in the novel to drive separation between him and Baz, I like to think that taking it off himself was, in part, a romantic gesture - a symbolic dismantling of that last wall between them.
That said, artistically, I tried to evoke the sensation of falling in love. For this reason, I largely left words out of it and tried to render the format in a way that makes it feel like you’re… descending. The colors deepen. The panels get smaller. And the last page shows Simon and Baz falling into each other’s arms out of frame, with flames dominating the end shot. (*wink* See what I did there?)
Anyway, I hope you guys enjoy it as much as I loved drawing it. <3
PS: Baz’s hair is based on my husband’s when we were married. It’s short now, but I can live vicariously through Simon for a bit…
this is one of the funniest fucking scenes in the entire book
