"It's good to see you," Akira said, arms open. "Be better if you didn't scare me first," Janessa rolled her eyes then hugged him. It was hard to believe they only met this week, they felt like old friends already, "I was about to grab a bite before I head home, you hungry?" "Just ate, but I'd be happy to give you some company!" he smiled, "You won't believe my work day!" He proceeded to talk her ear off about his ridiculous coworkers. Despite her apartment issues, Janessa felt at home with her friends.
"Boo!" "Ahh! What the- Akira??" Janessa was on her way home when she was surprised by a familiar face, "You scared me!" Akira busted out laughing, "I know, you totally jumped!!" "Jerk.." she playfully pushed him, giggling, while he cracked up.
Janessa happened upon a spa & yoga center billboard on her jog, they were advertising a free meditation room and she couldn't pass up that opportunity so she took a cab over to Newcrest. "It's so peaceful here!" she awed to herself as she settled on a meditation stool. This was exactly what she needed, she could feel the tension melting away.
When Janessa returned from her sale, she heard a dripping sound coming from her kitchen, "Oh no..." she went to investigate and, yup, she had a leaky pipe. "Oh, ew, gross!!" she shrieked and ran out of her apartment when she saw it - a roach. She was definitely going to have to call her landlord about this. "I'll get to it before 8," he told her. She was grateful it would be today after hearing so many landlord horror stories but she could not stay in that apartment in the meantime so she put on her workout clothes and went out for a jog to explore the city.
Janessa had another buyer by morning and they wanted to meet up at noon so she spent the morning painting some more. She couldn't believe how well this was going! It made her nervous, this was going almost too well... She had to start thinking about her long term plans before her savings ran out.
Janessa wasn't asleep yet, but it was late and she wanted to be. She didn't want to be that neighbor but she had to knock on Penny's door again - they had been going at it for over 20 minutes! Penny answered the door in a different maid's outfit, "I just saw the time, I am so sorry! I guess I got used to having no neighbors for a while... it won't happen again!" She ran back inside before Janessa could say anything so she headed back to her place. It's not like she was gonna comment on the new maid's outfits anyways...
Penny must've kept her promise because Janessa woke up feeling both well-rested and inspired. She painted some more, taking extra care to use a timer so she remembered to eat better today and one of her listings already had a response! She was able to complete the sale that evening; §75 wasn't a lot but it was money and she she was proud of making it.
In the dead of the night, Janessa was awoken by some rather enthusiatic woo-hoo next door, "I-is that Penny??" She got up, threw her clothes on, and knocked on the door. Penny came out, red-faced and panting. "Penny, it's 2 in the morning!" Janessa tried to stay calm, but she just didn't respond well to being woken up like this, "I appreciate the warm welcome, but I need my sleep! Can you please be more considerate??" "I am SO sorry, Janessa!" Penny was clearly mortified, "I guess we got caught up in the heat of the moment... We'll keep it down, I promise!" "Thank you!" Janessa went back to her apartment. It wasn't until she was about to fall back asleep when it fully registered in her head, "Was she wearing a maid's outfit??"
Janessa's lunch actually reminded her of the food a childhood friend's dad used to cook whenever she stayed over. They used to stay up late playing Spore so she felt inspired to paint a Spore creature, surely someone would see this painting and buy it out of nostalgia! She finished up just as the sun was setting and made a couple of listings online to sell her work before eating some more of that fruitcake she couldn't bare to get rid of.
Janessa's stomach was growling. She had painted from morning through early afternoon. She headed out to the food stands near her apartment. She couldn't believe how delicious the street food was, her mother always warned her about how gross it was but Janessa always had the suspicion that she was too quick to judge - hell, she had said city folk weren't friendly either and her neighbors had already shown otherwise!
When Janessa woke up, she headed straight into the shower. The water was freezing; she figured she shouldn't really be surprised with how low her rent was. She grabbed some leftover fruitcake from the fridge. She honestly hated it but letting food go to waste was more painful to her than eating it. After breakfast she started painting, she knew there were plenty of people that came to San Myshuno to by ameteur art and she needed simoleons as soon as possible.
"It's not much, but it's mine," Janessa took the time it took for her air matress to inflate to set up her easel in the spare room where there were two large windows to let in the light. She turned in for the night, still nervous, but content with her choice to take this risk.
Janessa opened the door to her new apartment, "Oh..." There was a literal chalk outline in front of her sofa. "I can't believe they left that here!" Penny exclaimed, "I know this looks bad, but once they investigated they figured out there was no foul play. He had some undiagnosed medical thing, I don't remember the name for it..." Janessa wasn't sure she believed her but she'd have to take her word for it. The place was dingy and even had a couple off mouse holes in the baseboards but she had a bed and a full kitchen so she didn't complain. The neighbors shared the fruitcake and got to know each other and, before everyone knew it, the sun had been down for a few hours and the neighbors headed out.
Janessa was nervous. Moving out to San Myshouno with no plan was a risky move and she was doing it all on her own. As she exited the elevator, however, she was greeted by three friendly faces. "Hi new neighbor!" a woman in a flashy dress beamed at her, "I'm Penny and these are my friends Akira and Miko. We wanted to welcome you, do you need any help moving things in?" A man in a leather jacket gave a shy wave that Janessa wouldn't have expected from someone that looked so cool and a girl with pink hair and a romper that matched furrowed her brow. "Wait, you don't have anything with you? Just that backpack?" Miko asked. "Not really, the landlord said he could provide the basics and I'm kinda..." Janessa felt her face turning red. She really should've planned ahead, this was so irresponsible but she had big dreams of being an artist in the city, "Well I don't need much.. as long as I have my easel, food, and a place to sleep, I'll be alright." "You're an artist??" Akira's eyes lit up, "That's so cool! San Myshuno's got a great art scene, I'm sure you'll fit right in!" "We've got great food too," Penny added, "Including my family's famous fruit cake! Please, enjoy!" She handed Janessa a loaf tied up with a red ribbon. Janessa wasn't a fan of of fruitcake, but she wasn't about to turn down food, "Thank you so much! I'm Janessa, by the way. Thanks for welcoming me, I didn't expect such friendly neighbors!"
Meet Janessa Byers. She’s a little clumsy and a lotta creative. She’s moving to San Myshuno to follow her dreams of being an artist in the city despite not having much of a plan. Can she adjust to city life or is this all a big mistake she’s wasting her savings on? Starting tomorrow at noon Eastern time, there will be one post per day following Janessa’s story! My writing is definitely rusty but I hope y’all will enjoy ^^
Hey y’all~ it’s been a while! My grandmother very kindly got me Discover University since it was on sale so meet Janessa! She'll be heading to school very soon!
