He stood up from the couch, picking up his coffee cup so it didn’t seem like he was trying to get away from the conversation on purpose. 𝘏𝘦 𝘸𝘢𝘴. But it didn’t matter.

“No marriage then. No worries.” He said quietly, turning away from her so he could walk out of the living room and into the kitchen.

“Hey,” she calls gently after him, getting up from the couch. She can tell he’s upset. “Hey,” she says again when she gently takes the hand that doesn’t have the mug in it. “I love you and I love our life exactly the way it is. And I know, for whatever crazy reason, that you love me too. And that’s enough - that’s all I need.” Though she was suspecting it wasn’t all that he needed.

He’s not sleeping, however his eyes are closed when he hears her enter their bedroom. It felt like forever in which they’d slept side by side, so he wondered why she’d picked tonight to finally make her way up to the room they shared. He doesn’t move at first, then when he hears her say that she loves him, his eyes do begin to open this time.

She’s so close he can practically touch her, but he moves one hand to rest at her waist, hoping that tonight would be the night she wouldn’t distance herself from him. “I love you too,” he whispered, his eyes closing again.

“You’re awake,” she whispers, a half amused chuckle managing to fall from her lips. “Thought you’d be asleep by now.” Her gaze shifts down ever so slightly when she feels his hand on her waist, warmth radiating from it. There’s a part of her that feels the need to pull away. The same part of her that always wants to run and protect herself - regardless of the fact that it’s Will, that she loves him, and that they’ve been together for years. That part of her has always been there lurking in the background. Then, of course, there’s the urge to pull away because she wants to protect him from what she knows. But instead of letting either of those parts of herself win, she instead shifts and places a hand on top of his, gently stroking the back of his hand with her thumb.

When she rests her hand on his, he lets out a sigh of relief, one in which he didn’t even know he was holding in. But he forces a smile anyways, using his free hand to run gently over her cheek. “You okay?”
