In 1786 when Louisiana was under Spanish control a law called the “Tignon Law” was passed under the governance of Esteban Rodriguez Miró forcing Creole women of varying degrees of African ancestry to wear headresses to cover their hair. This was supposed to be a way to subdue their beauty and to ward of the gaze of white French, Creole, and Spanish men and to mark us as inferior. But, unbeknownst to Mishé Miró this law did nothing but enhance our beauty because as usual coloured women know how to make lemonade from the white man’s bitter lemons. We wore tignons of bright colors some with jewelled accents and beautiful ribbons. This is one of the many examples of black girl magic in full effect. Some creole woman from across the diaspora still wear Tignons to this day.

the best thing about this is that when there’s plenty of resources, domesticated cats will naturally form colonies. in these colonies female cats raise their kittens communally with their kin. so you get situations where moms will raise kittens with their daughters from a previous litter, cats from the same litter will raise kittens together, etc. so not only does this little old kitty see her human as family, she is also excited to help her with her kitten.

As a fiber artist, it BREAKS MY HEART when creators post in one of the fiber art Facebook groups I’m in that “I made this, I’m charging X, is that too much?” and the picture will be a stunning queen size afghan and the price they’re worried is too high is 50$. i just want to shout “PRICE OF MATERIALS + TIME IT TOOK TO MAKE @ MINIMUM WAGE” at the minimum.
