I think part of what makes Johnny Cash’s cover of Hurt so sincere is that WAS sincere being sung by him

Johnny was far from a saint and there was periods of his of life that were one hubris induced screw up after another when he was young and stupid. Drug abuse, infidelity, foolish pride, property damage (the man once started a forest fire while drugged out)

As he grew older you could tell by his music how heavily his mistakes and the way he hurt the people close to him weighed on him so when he sings a lyric like “I will let you down/I will make you hurt” it’s REAL. It’s actually a tired old man wracked with guilt expressing his regret for his mistakes.

Especially with the change from “Crown of Shit” to “Crown of Thorns” because it becomes a line about bearing the cross for his own sins.
