It seemed like mot people had the same opinion about the Belles, he wasn’t sure if he met one of them, as he was new, so he honestly didn’t really know that many people around the town, but he was in their party, so maybe that would change, “That’s what I heard, but I would just be able to agree or disagree, if I knew one of them,” he could be really shy, rarely was the one that started a conversation with someone, as he got extremely anxious about it, so not always was easy to meet new people, “That’s different, when I’m with my uniform it’s different.”

Lele always felt like she could never fit in anywhere; born in Madison but a first-genner whose family was not part of the town’s rich history while on the other hand, she wasn’t born in Mexico and visited her family members every other year, so she wasn’t as connected as she could be. So it sucked that she couldn’t understand or help Amelio in adjusting to the Southern town’s  unspoken social norms. “Nah, they love our public officers so I’m sure they’d never yell at that sun kissed face.” She said with a flirty smirk and walked up to smooth over his lapel. “Is it now? Does your uniform make ya like Superman so that you’ve got all these powers? I mean, unless someone brings ya kryptonite.”

The moment that he heard her voice, he started to feel that familiar feeling in his stomach. How she didn’t notice the fact that he was always nervous around her, was beyond him, “That would have sucked, not that I can’t handle being yelled at, but it’s never fun…” he would avoid it as much as he could, it was just an unpleasant situation, “Hm… Thanks… I’m not really sure how I did it, my reflexes aren’t always that fast…”

It was really adorable to see him so flustered after that incident, Leticia just wished it had been about her instead of some stupid shrimp cocktails.  “Oh for sure, the Belles are pretty intimidating. I’ve learned to mind my business and be polite with them if I’m ever in a situation.” She said with a nervous bite of her lip. “Now come on, I know that’s not true. I remember that time you caught my neighbor’s cat in that huge willow tree by my house, woulda been a goner if it hadn’t been for you.”

Ximena leaned up against the bar, turning her head to look over at Lele, chuckling at her words. “Hey.” She opened her purse and pulled out a little flask, holding it out towards her friend as  little smirk came along her lips. “You said tequila and I make dreams come true.” She teased.

Lele clapped lightly and quickly grabbed the flask, attempting to sneak a drink just in case members of the Belles Board were nearby. “See, this is why we’re friends.” she said with a smirk. “Am I remembering wrong or did you also have a quince?”

Briar felt out of place. There she was, a Belle in all her glory, vice-president even, and husband-less. Of course, the divorce had been har fault, but that didn’t soothe the feeling of standing there in her dress without the same date she’d had for nearly twenty years prior. “I’m pretty partial to the ball myself, but that does sound like a wild event.” She’d never been to a quince, but the supplier she used for ball gowns made some beautiful quince dresses she’d had the pleasure of ordering a small handful of times for girls in town. 

Lele’s back immediately straightened as soon as she heard that voice in her rearview. “Miss Nash! You look just lovely tonight.” She said with a large smile, hoping she’d be pardoned for her rudeness earlier. “Y’all just did a fantastic job tonight, really well done. Captured the classiness of the Belles!”

The only time that he was not clumsy at all, was when he was working, as he knew that if he did something wrong, someone could end up hurt, but when he was out of his uniform, the same couldn’t be said. So wouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone that he almost bumped into one of the waitresses when he turned around, “Oh jeez, sorry,” thank god he managed to stop in time, as the tray was filled with glasses, it could end up hurting someone, “That was close.” he said it out loud, but mostly to himself. @madison-starters​

Lele giggled as she saw the fireman maneuver his way from an accident that would have undoubtedly gotten him yelled at (in the most polite Southern way that only Belles could do) or possibly kicked out of the Ball. “Dang, you really saved yourself there from getting cussed out by Lou Dunn if she’d have seen ya, this event is really her baby.” The Xicana said with a smirk. “It was really impressive how you dodged that waitress though, fireman.”

Nimet was waiting for her drink while swaying to the rhythm of the soft music, she prefered more upbeat music but it was not up to her and she had to go with it. Turning around when she heard someone talking she smiled at Lele and nodded in understanding, chuckling at the mention of… someone sneaking tequila. “That sounds so fun! You did the right choice. I did it because… well, my mom thought it’d be good for me, be part of the whole group, I wanted it too, sure, thought it’d be fun to make friends and stuff. It was fun but it found out I’m not belle material, I didn’t take it as seriously as some other girls did. I just wanted to have fun.”

Lele smiled at Nimet’s recollection of when she debuted as Belle. The Xicana woman had remembered that Ball well, since it was the first (and last) one she had attended due to Jules debuting at the same Ball. Few women who had debuted didn’t go through in joining the Madison Belles, and Nimet was one of them- and she respected the fuck out of that, going against the town’s traditions. “I remember it well! You had such a beautiful dress back then, it was so different from the other girls that were debuting that year.” She said with a sip of her julep.

It was rare for Roman McGregor to actually be a good mood and there probably wasn’t a single person in this town who got to see the softie side of him. He held the pool stick between his hands as his eyes lifted up to look at the person who was bending down to look at their shot. He let out a long irritated sigh as his gaze drifted over towards the clock on the wall. He tapped his foot against the ground as his eyes flickered back to the person. “Come on already, man… Don’t got all day like you do apparently.”

Lele sighed and knocked the final two into the corner pocket. She turned around with a cocked eyebrow and her pool stick by her side. “You just gotta concentrate, McGregor. Maybe that way you’ll finally win a game and you won’t have to owe me any more drinks.” Leticia smirked and walked away, smirking with the confidence that only the Booze Barn could provide. “Oh, and remember - my special is a paloma.”

“Do my eyes deceive me, or is that Madison Middle & High’s best music teacher... in a bowtie?” Lele said with amusement as her coworker and classroom neighbor waltzed up to her. “I gotta say, Nev, I’m surprised you didn’t switch up the suit jacket for a leather one. Still, it suits ya!”

Avery looked over at the voice, taking the woman’s hand. “Oh, no, it’s certainly alright.” She smiled sweetly at Lele, “I should have been payin’ better attention.” Lele was only a few years younger than Avery and while Avery only taught at the elementary school, she was familiar with plenty of teachers within Madison. “Oh those little ducklings are just so sweet,” Avery awed as she placed a hand over her chest, “Do you feed them often?”

Lele had seen Avery at a few union meetings, but mostly she didn’t talk to most of the elementary teachers unless it was her friend Do. It wasn’t that she didn’t get along with the elementary teachers, she just was always busy with something and didn’t really have friends outside of her coworkers and friends from college/high school. “No, come on my lil bag of feed is so small, it’s my fault!” She said apologizing and picking up the bag. “I feed ‘em every other week, just so they don’t get too spoiled.”

Lele usually didn’t attend the events for those involved in Madison’s “high society”, but she had some of her favorite students ask her to attend as they’d be debuting and when it came to her kids she could never say no. She was plenty surprised to have her old quince dress fit and for so many to have complimented her on her modern fashion style, but she was happy to take them....as long as she’d have a drink in her hand, which she was currently missing. As she nodded to the barkeep, she looked at the person standing next to her. “I’m not saying that I don’t understand why the popular girls in my year mocked me for not doing the belle ball instead of my quince. I’m just saying that my quince was much more fun with surprise dances and less stuffy with my tios sneaking in some tequila.”

BELLE BALL

Lele had rarely attended the Belle Ball- when she was younger, her parents had encouraged her to have a quinceañera instead and only the popular girls in her class were Belles when she had (shortly) considered it. But with her best friend Juliana and her sister Lou helping plan this year’s shindig, it made her get out her old quinces dress out, and surprisingly it still fit like a glove.

Ximena pressed her lips together as she put the block of cheese back into the bag.  “You had me at cotija,” she laughed as she let the woman help her with her groceries as she started walking towards their apartment complex. “Ah,” she chuckled a little. “Yeah, things have been good. I have mostly been hanging out with my abuela.”

Lele laughed along with Ximena as she gripped the groceries better as they got up to the steps of the complex.  “How is she? I haven’t seen her since the huge Christmas bash, she’s always so nice and makes the best flan!” She said as she waited for her friend to put in her key. “But more importantly really, how are you? What are you doing now with your life?”

Luke didn’t really think that anyone would mind him shirtless, but his southern manners told him that it was his responsibility to apologize regardless. “Ah, so you’ve somewhat of a goose whisperer?” Teased he. “Please, o great one, tell me the secrets. It can’t just be food”

Lele smirked as she put her hand on her waist. “It’s real simple, you feed ‘em every two weeks. Not once a week cause then they get greedy and expectant, you do it every other one that way they’re grateful and nicer to ya.”

“Yeah, she had some thing with her cousin’s kid or whatever. I don’t know, she was up in Savannah when I called.” Hunter let out a long sigh, rolling his eyes. “If you hear of anyone needin’ a job, you send ‘em my way. But only if they’re not completely useless, alright? Tequila sunrise comin’ right up.” He moved to start mixing the drink of choice for Lele, glancing back over at her as he did. “I heard you got third place, right? Gotta say, I’m impressed. I didn’t know you were hidin’ those guns under those sleeves of yours. Any other secrets you got up there?”

Lele pouted at Hunter’s bad luck with coordinating with his employees. “My kid brother needs a job but he’s not of age yet and I’m not sure how good he’d be to ya.” She said with a smirk and a tap of her fingers on the bar. “Ugh, yeah. I wanted to beat Mitchum’s ass but without an entire football team on my side I wasn’t so lucky.”

“And he’s a good kid? With all due respect, I just can’t have any trouble around the farm. If he’s a good worker and doesn’t mind getting his hands dirty, then send him my way.” With the menu in hand, despite not needing it, Riggs grinned. “Anytime you need a little extra money or something, don’t be afraid to ask. I know you’re good for it.” He’d always offer a helping hand to anyone in need, mostly because he had the luxury of doing so. “What are you gonna order?”

“Come on, you don’t trust my brother? My mother raised us better to flake on manual labor, you know that Riggs!” Lele said with a smile and a sip of her sweet tea. She never wanted her family to be seen as a charity case, but her little brother was well, a little shit, and needed to stop coasting off their parents hard work and do something with his life. “Stop it, don’t do that! I’m only letting you pay for this meal cause I covered ya last time. You know my usual order: ribs with a side of coleslaw and mac and cheese with a piece of cornbread!”
