Sally stopped dead in her tracks when Jun Moon yelled out to her. He was quite the figure, but they never had problems. Why would they? She didn’t talk to him.

He might hate her hair, her eyeliner, her altogether alternative look. But she wasn’t like the ruffians he usually was so outspoken about. “What? Why?”

Was there another demon storm brewing, a dastardly plan to ‘Carrie’ his dear cousin? Or did he simply hate fun and revelry?

How likely was it that lightening and a car struck the same family twice?

Sally wondered if the probability was less than a million to one and if her and her mom were really that special. She wasn’t possessed. That’s what she told herself when Dipper’s machine stirred and lit up. Whatever happened to her, she wasn’t housing the dark energy of a powerful demon at least… Not a powerful one.

She stood stone still. Looking to Dipper, wide eyed, for guidance. Sally’s gaze shifted in circles around them but her vocal chords froze. She could play cool and nonchalant all she wanted, but at the end of the day she was just a scared girl in the woods somewhere.

“W-What….” She couldn’t finish her sentence.

In Enchantra, it could be anything,

But Dipper had a hunch.

He’d caught wind of some Sorrow Shade activity in this area before. He had a theory that one of them might’ve slipped away from that chaotic summoning in 2023 and been lurking in the woods since. One or more. 

The shadows around them started to lengthen. 

“I’m pretty sure it’s a Sorrow Shade,” said Dipper. “If you start to feel really really sad… well, then that’s confirmation.”

If Dipper was alone, he’d probably try to withstand it longer — he knew a thing or too about wrestling with the metaphorical demons of his mind, so he knew how to shake a Sorrow Shade’s influence. But he wasn’t about to be held responsible for this girl getting possessed.

He fumbled in his backpack and pulled out a high voltage flashlight.

“Here,” he said, thrusting it to Sally. “If you start feeling really sad, shine the light. It lessens their power. You can, uh, run out of here if you want -- I need to grab some readings, though."

Sally was scared.

“Sho-Sorrow Shade?” She stuttered on the alliteration. Fumbling with the torch. She turned it on immediately. “What do you mean?? Run from sadness?!”

Were these demons a metaphor for the scars left behind on Enchantra? Did he mean a literal demon? Like, not just a demonology theorem?

Sally worried the sad she felt now was more because of its own realization than any demons outside of her. “Dipper, what do I do?” She didn’t want to die… perhaps, again.

April's eyebrows twitched curiously. She had a vague memory from...New Year's? Where she and Sally had bumped some coke together and spent a little time dancing...

Had that been Sally's first time?

"I mean--yeah!" April said, flipping some of her hair and laughing. "It's the best way to have a good time." Especially when commemorating the death of your father!

"Why, do you need a hook up? I can totally do that for you," she said, very generously.

Sally remembered a very different experience with her first time on hard drugs. She remembered a clown wailing and being so strung out she actually believed that happened, but deep down she knew the sad eye's she remembered were simply reflections of her own.

"Ah, oh, nah. I'm good, just wondered if you were good. You seemed a bit out of it." Once her concern for herself had been sated, another concern arose. April was hardly her friend, but she was being nice to Sally when she never had to be. And Sally could tell there was something equally as sad swimming behind her green eyes.

Sally Finklestein was talking to her......why?

It wasn't that April disliked her. She just knew very little about her. Even though they were both Swynlake natives. Living in a funeral home was kind of metal, but besides that--Sally didn't really get out much. Her dad had always been kind of weird.

So, while April was also the overly friendly type, she didn't expect it from Sally and it threw her off a little.

Or maybe it was just Sally's energy...she seemed nervous about something.

"Oh, it was great!" April said after a moment. "Were you there? I feel like...maybe I saw you?" To be honest, she didn't remember much of the night, so if she and Sally had talked, she didn't want Sally to think she had forgotten.

She absolutely did see her. That's what had Sally's spine shiver. The way she was acting, though, didn't seem like she remembered at all. Half hurt, but mostly relieved, Sally thought she could play it off.

"Oh, yeah. In passing. Just... stopping through. Did you...?" She wiped the tip of her nose pointedly.

Playing the role of an addict was not something Sally saw herself falling into. She didn't see herself actually doing hard drugs in a club bathroom either... but that's what craving flesh does to someone apparently.

Salynís lived most of her adult life in solitude until that day on the beach that changed her life forever. She had mediocre magic for an elf, nothing too special about her, and she kept away from the other elves. Now her silver palm and iridescent dragon mark her decidedly above the rest.

Fifty years had passed since then, and Salynís still didn’t like people all too much. But their world was rapidly expanding as she wanted Madilinea to see more of it. She wouldn’t admit that she did too, even though it scared her to hope for more. The world was at peace now. Nothing to fear outside Du Weldenvarden other than the nonmagical bigots. She supposed it was just their lack of this bond that made them so bitter. She could have been like them had Madilinea not hatched for her. Perish the thought. Still, even with that understanding Salynís vowed to fight against the bitterness and fear. The Earthbound Shields were pitiful and they cannot sever the bond between a dragon and a rider. Least of all Madilinea and her. Though her dragon’s ever growing curiosity and distraction could cause a rift they have never faced before. Maybe they overcome with something new learned about themselves and each other.

"So you don't think Ashmedai is a demon to worry about?" She says, incredulous standing mere meters from the mouth of the cave where he resides.

She didn't think he actually meant that, she was simply being adversarial. Her mild aggression was only a reflex for the prickly feeling his words gave her. A mildly powerful demon summoned would be worse than a demon who could live on its own. Sally wondered if the gap in her memory protected something dark in the forest or herself. Either way, she was risking it all to fill it back in.

"This all sounds painfully interesting, but... do you actually want demons out here just to, what, prove a point?"

“I’m saying Ashmedai isn’t going out of his way to hunt people down,” Dipper said, bright and bouncy. He didn’t miss the confrontational tone in the girl’s voice, but it was nothing that he wasn’t used to from students in discussion groups and professors during review. “Think of it like… getting struck by lightning. Really terrible if it happens, but the likelihood is way less than a car crash.”

Maybe a bit morbid to talk about such fatalistic events in such a chipper tone, but Dipper continued on. 

“And well… demons don’t wanna be stuck in the underworld. They have more freedom here. They like it here. We don’t know a lot about where they come from, but most sources say it isn’t great. It’s less to prove a point and more to just get the fuck out, y’know?” 

The forest felt quiet. Very quiet right now. One of the detectors in Dipper’s hand started to beep. He looked at it and then glanced at the girl.

“There might be something nearby…”

Sally spent all Valentine's Day sobering from her high and hoped April did the same. She hoped she did it very far from her and the Ball. Sally came and went like April did from the cemetery.

Her body felt refreshed. The bones in her skin didn't twinge with every movement, her lethargy left her. All it costed was someone's life.

And potentially any chance at a friendship with one of the coolest girls that ever spoke to Sally. If she remembered... If April remembered, Sally hoped the writhing creatures in her stomach ate her from the inside out. She couldn't bear facing her actions, it would be easier to rot into the floorboards leaving only greasy stains of her guilt.

Sally caught her in transit to somewhere. The sun painted her hair even more golden.

She practiced this: 'Hey, April. How're you? You didn't look so great the other night...' No mention of the cemetery, no blood, or nightmarish horrors.

She fell in step with April and immediately spewed, "Hey, April. What did you do the other night? N-Not the Valentine's night... I mean before. Like... was Friday the Thirteenth at Pierrot's any good?"

What the fuck, what the fuck. Stunted social growth was more likely to kill her than any monster hunter.

tbh it was pretty awkward. I ended up leaving early.

Zero expectations is smart though, I met some nice people but no one that I reeeeeally connected with. I wish I could say I didn't care.

The balls are fun, even if just for people watching. That's what I end up doing most of the time. Just feels safer on the sidelines because I also have a shit storm in my life right now. I won't pry too much about your business, but it's not as if I have anyone to tell if you ever want to unload.

I think I'm changing in a bad way. I don't know how to stop it and I feel trapped. That's my simplified drama.

Dipper meant it. He wished his professors asked questions like this, because he had a ton of theories. But they preferred not to think about demons lingering in Enchantra. They claimed it was a bad look for the department.

Think of the funding cuts! 

What would people say if we were going out into the woods summoning demons?!

But he wasn’t doing that! He was just proving that the demons were there and that people were going to summon them and that somehow they were lingering.

“My theory is that if it’s a strong demon, it absolutely has enough energy to linger in Enchantra for… well, for a long time. The stronger it is, the longer it can survive. But I don’t think the strong ones are actually the ones to worry about.” He paused for dramatic effect. “Because they can last longer without a tie to a human, they’re not gonna be as worried about finding a potential host. If they need a bump in energy, they could probably get it without fully possessing or making a deal with someone. The really weak ones won’t even get a chance to. So it’s that mid-tier of demons that are almost strong, who really want to extend their time with this newfound surge of energy. Those are the ones that will be actively looking for hosts.”

APRIL: Friday the Thirteenth felt like a perfect way to celebrate the night before the two year anniversary of her father’s death. 

While everyone else was giddy with butterflies over the letter writing event, April’s nerves made her nauseous. She didn’t want it to be tomorrow. She would do anything to turn back the clock. If only she could rewind her Cartier watch her daddy had bought her on her sixteenth birthday and that would set everything back in time. 

But, she couldn’t.

And there was no reason to dwell. 

“Do you think I should do my hair up or down?” April asked, reaching behind her to put her hair up in a sloppy ponytail, frowning at her reflection, and dropping it down again. “Is a red lippy too much?” 

There was a flash of movement in the mirror and April’s heart jumped. She turned quickly, hair flying, but May was still on the other side of the room. Gooseflesh broke out on her arms and she stared at her sister wide eyed for a second before schooling her face.

Did you see that? she almost asked, but swallowed it back down. 

“C’mon, hurry up and tell me,” she whined, trying to cover up her panic, “we’re going to be late.”

Bram felt indifferent about the whole thing anyways. Now he felt bad making Sally feel awkward. The whole thing was fucked. Nothing good ever came from him and this stupid “gift”.

“Yeah I don’t know either.”

He finally propped himself up on one letting his long legs hang towards the dirt. Bones trotting a big circle around the adjacent stones and sat next to him looking over to Fang with some interest.

“I uh yeah.” He said quickly. “I’ve got one particular problem around here actually but I’m not trying to attract her right now.” The last thing he wanted was for that spirit to come do what she did to Mim…to Sally.

“I honestly don’t even know what’s super fucked to ask.” He shrugged. “I don’t really know how to be a medium I just sort of am one.” His eyes darted back to his new friend. “My family well…they said I was cursed by the devil so they weren’t much help in the honing in the craft department.”

Sally's eyes pulled towards that lonely corner of the graveyard again. She made an effort to ignore it. "Yeah? Well, she lives in my backyard so I could always evict her." She joked.

"That's fucked up. Family can really suck. Uh, my dad, he doesn't tell me I'm cursed by the devil or anything but I'm pretty much trapped in that house because of his rules." She nodded towards the window Bram would always find her behind. "Does coming here help hone your powers, then? And here I though you just liked the view..."

Sally smirked cheekily.
