have been thinking about driving as a symbol of personal autonomy and agency and taking control, and it’s really interesting to me how in the first season of the silt verses faulkner is literally doing all of the driving whenever he’s w carpenter or carpenter&paige (well, other than that one time when he’s unconscious cause a giant crab fucked him up real good). which kinda goes nicely together w the whole thing of him starting to carve out his story. the boy is fucking desperate to be behind the wheel of his (and honestly others’) life!!

and then in season 3, he’s often in cars (the drive from the Katabasians’ Council to the Gulch, from the radio station to the ruins of Gulch and from there to his dad’s cabin, and once again from his family home to the Grand Aquifer) but all of these times he’s being driven around. not onceeee is he himself behind the wheel. and that, on one hand, is obviously due to the position of power/authority and thus comfort that he’s now occupying—now he has people to perform these kinds of services for him. butttttt i also think that it shows that the reins aren’t fully in his hands and in actuality he’s really not as in control as he’d like to think he is.

good job, buddy, you’ve made the narrative of your story into a self-perpetuating machine, now it can run along all on its own!:D you’re now stuck in the passenger seat of your life<3

Do you think Caine greets them as friends? Do you think Pomni and Ragatha turn to each other with gazes that indicate that they're glad the new person came in now and not before?

Do you think that if the new person is scared, Pomni takes it upon herself to figure out what's wrong? That Zooble or Kinger offer advice, or Gangle distraction, even though they don't know if they can lose anyone anymore. They don't want to risk it.

Do you think that tours of the circus grounds are group-led now? That everyone agrees to go out and show them all of the adventures? That they talk about memories, of when they thought it wouldn't get better?

Do you think they made sure anyone new felt at home in the place everyone once tried so desperately to leave?

adulthood notes:

The Rodeo Rule: you only have to do it for the first time once.

The Rohan Rule: if you are at a social function full of new people and you want to be liked, find someone doing important work like setup or food prep and offer to help.

The Tutorial Mode Rule: to navigate an unfamiliar situation where you fear you will mess up an interaction, preface the interaction by mentioning that you've never done this before, and let them know if you have a specific concern or question.

The Rocket Science Rule: most new things you want to try seem very complicated but are simple when taken step by step.

The [X] Will Remember That Rule: if you need to make small talk with the same person on a regular basis, try to save one fact or current event in their life from a given conversation and bring it up next time you talk.

The Cool Binder Rule: by wearing clothes and accessories that are to your taste instead of trying to blend in, people will be more likely to compliment you and show interest in you as a person.

Even in a post-capitalist, post-consumerist world, you still need to produce goods, as a result of this, you need factories because it is more effective to have a few people making a lot of clothes in a factory than every woman being forced to sit down and spin wool all day.

The issue with factories is poor wages, unsafe working conditions and environmental impact, all of which can be fixed through things like regulatory bodies and unions, the issue is not the fact that goods are no longer all made at home
