the ongoing thread of South American but espeicallllllyyyyy Argentine football fandom saying “you’re only calling out this behaviour because he’s South American” when it’s some behaviour literally no one else is doing to this extent is like. I’ve rarely seen anything in professional sports that infuriated me this deeply and that will age so badly but there’s something so brutal about the football culture constantly bringing in these identity politics based issues of South America vs European Colonizers and then accusing others of global north identity politics yanqui bullshit when people point out so many of the most harassed Western European players in these confrontations - Jude Bellingham, Lamine Yamal, Virgil Van Dijk, most of the French and British teams tbh and the overwhelmingly despised Mbappé- are Black

like I think this match has seen the collapse of a really specific kind of utilized identity politics that will not bear out well in many ways given the genuinely unequal relationships between South America and Western Europe at political and and economic levels! It’s a messy situation where many things can be true and several are

a) the presence of people of color in Europe does not absolve colonial crimes anywhere let alone in Latin America

b) the presence of people of color on European teams does not absolve neocolonial inequalities

C) At some point in the day you just genuinely have to treat everyone well no matter their country of origin

d) several South American countries esp Argentina pull identical tactics when playing African, Eastern European, and Asian teams

e) it becomes some kind of something to hear “wooo Argentina versus France downnnn Argentina versus Netherlands take thattt colonizerssss” kinda of rhetoric when the players going down with violent tactics are Senegalese-French and Indo-Dutch and Jamaican-English players. It’s the idea of like creating this post colonial proxy war and then having willful ignorance of who is actually going down so that when the Western European teams that complain about these tactics bring them forward the response can be “colonizer tears” as in the realities of the ongoing England vs Argentina and Netherlands Vs Argentina rivalries

anyway I’m not saying that ALLLL players do this or alllll fans do this just that these are significant pieces of online and official team discourse that have been widely joined in on and will hopefully have an end to them because they are appealing to many people, but they’ve camoflauged some really egregious behaviour against precisely the people these teams are supposedly representing

I do think I am being passive-aggressive-d by the gender critical couple infesting my eco circle. Like, I used to know you! We weren't friends friends, I didn't know them like that, but we were comrades, you could say. We worked together on eco activism stuff, alongside a lot of other people, united in a cause. Now you're going to passive aggressively offer to get drinks in to everyone but me at our mutual friend-comrade's wake?!

#i swear i am not imagining that this happened.#fyi i have decided that comrade is a good word to use to explain this relationship #we aren't a communist group as such but i think the dead communists would be fine with my word usage if you asked them :P #it's such a useful term to explain the kind of closeness you have with people in your activism group #even if you don't know them that well as individual people- you are all united #anyway these 2 are the poster children for hard left gender critical views but luckily we barely see each other as they joined another thin #but this local area has like 50 eco crusties in it max so we ALL know each other and see each other sometimes #it is unavoidable. there is no way i can still be involved in any eco stuff around here and not be on their margins. such is life.#the thing with hard left gender critical ideology is it latches onto the parts of it that are framed like an activist cause #it is very easy to frame gender critical ideology in a way that certain old school radicals just eat up #because at the end of the day a lot of radicalism is about lack of compromise- give us this or don't even bother #so the idea that gender might be more complicated and that is to be embraced is very scary to some of the radical old guard #once they realised i was actively transitioning they just pass-ag me now in a way that's socially approved so no one else notices #not sure any of this makes sense and maybe some of you who have much more options for activism in your areas #will be like disgusted that i don't flush out the filth or distance myself from everyone in principle or cause a ruckus #but like...i have a realistic idea of what might happen. and that's the reality of small town organising. Like it or lump it.#*shrugs *#anyway much love to our lost lady...she was 80 had a long and amazing life and never stopped causing trouble #i'm glad i learned about the rest of her life at her funeral as i knew her for less than the last decade of it

I don't think I'm going to the trans parliament activism rally on 25th June

I talked it over with my work LGBTQ network. A member had been last year when they did this just after the supreme court ruling. The member said that it really would work best and be most useful if my MP would meet me. I said there's basically no chance that he will. :( In my town in the eco activism circle, we are all familiar with his constant refusal to engage with anything. He knows that the best way to keep his seat is to never, ever do anything you wouldn't expect from a Tory MP who has been MP of his constituency for a VERY long time.

Then the member said, what has he said on this issue? Maybe there's something you could work with if you green card him for a discussion on the day? So I looked it up and turns out he is indeed a vocally anti-'trans lobby' pro 'common sense' man who was quick to praise the supreme court ruling.

So I decided there is nothing there. I'm sorry, I can't. I don't want to talk to him at all and I cannot see any benefit in doing so. He won't budge on any green issue, there is basically 0% chance he would budge on this. And on top of that, it's forcast to be like 33C that day and for UK infrastructure that's put out a weather warning heat, so I don't feel I can even justify going out there just for a show of numbers.
