The fact that Shadow is willing to kill, maybe even too wiling, while Sonic is wary about even imprisoning people actually really works for me because in a lot of respects Shadow is supposed to be the mature and serious one while Sonic is the big goofball, but then that dynamic is kind of reversed in a way that reflects how Sonic has more actual life experience. Like Sonic, whose life is disproportionately leisure time and traveling, has had the time to form this whole philosophy that he's clearly thought about a lot as to why freedom is important to him and how it informs the way he lives his life. Of course, it's a worldview that runs into a lot of obstacles, but that's what you'd expect from a philosophy formulated by a teenager from the ground up. Meanwhile Shadow was this barely socialized science experiment who lived on a space station before he was suddenly thrown into a world full of things trying to kill or imprison him as his first impression, so he approaches it in this simple, adolescent kind of way and concludes "we should just kill all the bad people, easy."
