One thing skam fr really gets right is the isolation and bitterness being closeted creates. Like even if rationally you know that those around you will be ok with you being gay, you just can’t stand to identify yourself with all the negative things associated with homosexuality you’ve internalized over the years and that’s what gets you. You feel like no one else can get it, which really straight people can’t, in most cases. It makes you angry and sad and a version of yourself you probably don’t like very much. And the worst part is, you can’t completely blame your friends, your parents, or yourself - just the pervasiveness of heterosexuality which is so engrained in society. Except you, your family, and your friends have probably participated in upholding that heteronormativity. And coming to terms with all that, with the realization that homophobia is everywhere and nowhere, and everyone and no one and that that’s just something you’re gonna have to deal with… It’s hard. But skam fr manages to capture all of that in 20 minute episodes.
