TODAY at LA Art Book Fair we’re hosting a signing with Corine Vermeulen for her long-awaited publication “Your Town Tomorrow”! Stop by booth O01 from 2-3pm and say 👋. 〰️ The photo book “Your Town Tomorrow” (2007 - 2017) acknowledges a resilient community in the midst of challenging transitions. Although documentary in format, it is also a very personal series as it chronicles my life and work in Detroit, the communities where I have lived, and my friends and neighbors. 〰️ Detroit has been the site of complicated change since I moved here thirteen years ago. Real estate developers and corporate investors have altered the character of the city. The national media claims Detroit is a “new” city of great economic opportunity, but it hardly recognizes the people who have lived here throughout the changes. A city’s residents define its identity; the people of Detroit are essential to its culture and vitality. 〰️ These images are not meant to survey a Detroit 'as is.' Rather, they function as a glimpse into an alternate reality, where everyday life stands at a crossroads: between hope and despair, vulnerability and strength, the past and the future. 〰️ #spacescorners #corinevermeulen #yourtowntomorrow #detroit #laabf19 #printedmatter @corine_vermeulen @printedmatter_artbookfairs @spaces_corners http://bit.ly/2IwsH5B
Come visit Spaces Corners today from 1-7pm at Printed Matter’s 2019 LA Art Book Fair. Be sure to flip through one of our latest releases “self-portrait by the house wall” by @anastasiadavis_. We’re at table O01 between @jandlbooks and @aperturefnd! ➖ self-portrait by the house wall is an expressionistic portrait of a state of being that exists somewhere on the fringes of consciousness. In her debut book, Anastasia Davis depicts the sometimes-alien qualities of a claustrophobic internal existence and its blurred boundary with the outside world. A theater of muted domestic details are contrasted with anonymous exterior surroundings. A disembodied staircase or the undulating light pattern against a bedroom door are experienced with the same fragmented scrutiny as an outcrop of exposed rocks in the forest, the sharp pitch of a rooftop or the shifting texture of ocean waves. Within this dreamy body of ongoing work, Davis evokes a sensorial experience that taps into memory, displacement and the mysteries of our perception. ➖ Anastasia Davis was born in 1987 in the Ukraine and grew up in Israel and the United States. She studied psychology at Northwestern University in Chicago and photography at The International Center of Photography in New York. She lives and works in Pittsburgh and is the winner of the Silver Eye Center for Photography 2018 Publication Prize. ➖ #spacescorners #silvereye #anastasiadavis #laabf19 #printedmatter @printedmatter_artbookfairs http://bit.ly/2IhOXRd

We’re so thrilled for next week’s launch of "Social Studies”, a Spaces Corners Reading Room at Silver Eye! The reading room launch coincides with Silver Eye’s annual book fair and the Penn Avenue gallery crawl. Drop by and visit us Friday, Nov 2nd (6-10pm) and Saturday, Nov 3 (11-6pm). 〰️ Social Studies examines social documentary practices pioneered over 100 years ago by photographers seeking social and political change, beginning with the reformers and activists Jacob Riis and Lewis Hine. The reading room turns to artists who have updated, revised, and redefined this tradition over the decades. Cultural and social realms are foregrounded in these works, providing a window into different lives and ways of living around the world. The books collected here reflect an urge to recognize ourselves, feel that we belong, and enact change to create a more just world. The photographers in Social Studies are often members of the communities they have documented—giving personal access of their own experience to a wider audience. 〰️ #spacescorners #silvereye #socialstudies 〰️ @spaces_corners @silvereyecenter https://ift.tt/2D6x7yj
