what i’m learning the hard way today:  compression reduces the volume of a sound over a certain threshold; limiting removes it. i always thought a limiter was just an extreme compressor but no. i was working on a vocal track that was giving me trouble and switched the compressor for a limiter - cleaner, fits the mix better.
