“I… I can explain, Mama, I swear…” Lovino leaned heavily against the doorframe, and stared at the ground. He was too embarrassed and ashamed to look Carmen in the eyes. “I… I just wanted to get out for a bit, and I may have gotten into some trouble?” He mumbled, and it seemed that that was all he was willing to give as a response for now. “Can I please come in..?” He asked quietly, honestly not sure if Carmen would accept him.

Carmen stared at him, giving him a glare, her hands on her hips and she huffed. “Come in? Mijo, of course you can come in! What kind of a Mama would I be if I turned you out!” She stepped to the side so he could come in. “But don’t think that means you are out trouble with me! I want an explanation, Mijo! You had me worried sick!”

Her anger with him was mostly rooted in worry, and she was not going to let up on that. When she found out that he wasn’t where he was supposed to be, and then he took so long returning, she had grown more and more worried, that worry turning to anger as she had banged pots and pans around, cooking up a feast in a desire to do something with her energy that didn’t involve going out and finding him herself.

“You will sit at that table and eat the food I have made, and you will tell where you were and what happened!”

“Look, I know you’re angry, but for the love of God please stop yelling at me!” Lovino snapped as he slowly walked, more like limped, inside. He took a minute to look around; he had really missed Carmen’s home. He hesitated, then walked into the dining room and sat at the table as told. He put his head in his hands and sat silently for a few moments, before finally looking up again. “If you want to know what happened, I have to give you some background, and I know you won’t be very happy with me…”

He took a deep breath, and then sighed. He still refused to look Carmen in the eyes, and resorted to staring at the table. “You know how I’ve been going out more lately? Well, I’ve, um, been smoking…” He didn’t want to specify what. “And a few days ago, I went out to, y'know… buy some more, and I got caught up in the middle of something I shouldn’t have been involved in…” He had to stop, and took in another shaky breath. He figured he could let Carmen react to that before he’d continue.
