She was a naive 14 year old in a horrific situation and people complained that she was acting like a naive traumatized 14 year old.
Toriel:

Toriel is frequently flattened by fans into being The Perfect Mother character. When she strays away from that and showcases character flaws and flaws in her parenting, she is immediately criticized and treated like the worst person alive. People say she is a nuanced character but they dont actually want to see that in action. They also for some reason believe that "perfect mothers" exist and that when Toriel isn't one, she is abusive and neglectful. There's a lack of thought and concern put into her character by fans to the point where Toby Fox (writer/developer) on a stream had to say "your family in Deltarune loves you" because people were concerned that she was somehow a bad mom because she cannot read her child's mind. She is criticized whereas her ex husband who spends more time harassing her and believing he can "make everything right again" and get back together with her - despite her expressing clear disinterest - than he does spending time with their child. He didnt even know they have problems, whereas Toriel pays enough attention to them to know something is wrong and is happy to see them with a friend. Communication is a two way street but for some reason Toriel is expected to have all the answers. Oh yeah, and she's supposedly somehow the devil who was "taking their kid away from her ex husband" and then that was proven wrong by him not spending time with their child.
Rarely do we see mother characters given nuance or as more fleshed out characters. Toriel was created as a response to the way that mothers are so often demeaned and treated with zero importance in video games, and she is there to make you consider her feelings. She isn't perfect, but she is traumatized and bound to her motherhood and the loss of her children and it informs her actions in Undertale. In Deltarune, she is again a loving mother, but is criticized far too harshly for her mistakes. And yes, she makes mistakes. But everyone does, its only natural. There is no such thing as a perfect mother, and Toriel always exemplifies this. But she tries her best and cares so much, and remains a really compelling character across both iterations. She deserves better than to be hit with a weird madonna/where complex for mothers.

I tried to make an extended art this time, and really challenged myself with the setting/background. I used some CSP Image Materials for the details on the blanket and pillows, and I really think this came out well :)
