The second half of @namosagaâs ask, the Volo x reader holiday fic. Was it originally supposed to be headcannons? Maybe, but Iâm a sucker for Volo and he takes more nuance.
Anyways, this is written more with an OC in mind, so the reader has got some a lil sass. Also, this is modern era, but the reader is still supposed to be the PLA protag, just in PLZA Lumiose (you got sent home, congrats). It's short, it's sweet, it's pure fluffy and it's my first time writing and posting an x reader one shot!
This is self indulgent as hell and Iâm not sorry.
I am incredibly normal about Volo I promise
And a Happy New Century! Modern!Volo x Reader
You would be downright lying if you said celebrating the holidays in the modern era wasnât a weird readjustment to make.Â
Ironically, it was not a difficult adjustment to your partner, despite not even originating from this era like you did. It was a bit frustrating, really, how easily Volo adapted to your time. He claimed that âthe traditions are still the same at their core, so it really shouldnât be that much of a jumpâ, but that didnât explain how he learned to shop online over the course of a day. And he was better at it than you! It was infuriating, but at least you could blame that on him having a background in sales.Â
Today was upsetting for a different reason, though. He had been out for hours, and told you he wouldnât be back until late, so donât wait up for him. That had you worried already, not knowing what he was up to was always a risk, but around the holidaysâŠ? Who knew what he could be up to. Hopefully this had nothing to do with what you had told him about Jirachi and how important wishes were to modern tradition⊠You needed a distraction from the Volo-induced stress - a phrase you had never spoken aloud, but were tempted to at times - so, you ended up on the streets of Lumiose, wandering around and staring at the pretty decorations.
You were on edge, incapable of truly relaxing when outside, despite the wild zones keeping pokemon from just attacking out of nowhere. And you were always a bit nervous someone might recognize you, despite no image of you being in that museum exhibit. The cold didnât bother you, though. Hisui in the winter was much colder than this, even with snow drifting down softly, it didnât feel as bad to you as it likely did to the residents of the city. Honestly, it felt pretty nice. Nostalgic, even.Â
Eventually, you let yourself settle, grabbed a coffee from one of the cafe trucks dotted around the city, and sat down on a bench, facing a wild zone. Your mind was still stuck on trying to decipher what Volo was up to, so much so you didnât notice the presence behind you- At least until there was a hand on your shoulder. Before you knew what you were doing, you shot your elbow back into whoever touched you, immediately earning a groan. One you definitely recognized.
âOh you dumbass!â You huffed, turning around to face your partner, who was now doubled over with a hand on the bench for support, all while laughing softly. âYou scared the shit out of me! Stop doing that shit!âÂ
âIâll stop when I stop getting that reaction out of you,â He teased in turn, half out of breath as he brought himself around to sit beside you. âHow is my favorite hero doing this fine afternoon?â
âPissed at you, but otherwise fine now that I know you arenât blowing up some building across the city.âÂ
âNow who said I wasnât doing that?âÂ
âIâm kidding, donât take it so seriously.â He slung an arm around the bench behind you, and sighed. âGlad to see your reflexes havenât gone anywhere.âÂ
âHow would they? You still sneak up on me like a jackass. What have you been up to?âÂ
He turned to grin at you, and placed a finger on your nose with his free hand. âItâs a surprise, darling!âÂ
âYouâre shit at those.âÂ
âSays the one who just elbowed me for scaring them. Regardless, I was out shopping, I got done earlier than expected, and came back to see that you werenât home. Had to use the tracking on your phone to come find you.â
âThatâs kinda creepy, yâknow?â
âAnd if you mean that in a serious way, I wonât do it anymore, but with your refusal to use a map in this city-âÂ
âI get it, I get it! I wasnât being serious.â
His arm shifts from behind you to around your shoulders, then pulls you against him. âRegardless, I came to get you and bring you back home. If you stay out much longer, youâre gonna get frostbite- plus, I got stuff to make dinner.âÂ
âWhat are you thinking?âÂ
âNothing much, just an old favorite of yours.âÂ
âHow did you even find the ingredients to that?â
âMerchantâs secret~â He chimed with a wink, causing you to elbow him in the side half-heartedly.Â
âYouâre not a merchant anymore- Actually you hardly ever were.âÂ
â...Now that is just hurtful. Either way, I found them, so do you want food or not?â
âWell, not right this second, but I guess itâs about time we head home.â You rose to your feet, pulling him up with you. He slouched for a moment, just to not completely tower over you while you were dragging him around, but stood to full height once you let go.Â
The two of you walked back through the streets, now much quieter due to the snow piling up, hand in hand. You had both realized a long time ago that words couldnât always tell each other the right thing, so silent walks became the most common thing you did, especially in the snow. It worked fine, after all, what more was there to say in the moment?Â
After you both returned home, you quickly made for the couch, grabbing a blanket to wrap around yourself as you got comfy in front of the TV. Volo wasnât far behind, sitting beside you and pulling you into himself like he had at the cafe. It made for a startlingly peaceful scene, considering it was composed of an exhausted former hero and a man who wanted to overthrow God. Snow drifting softly outside, the TV quietly playing whatever obscure holiday movie happened to be on, and the two sat cuddled up on the couch. Who could ask for more, right?Â
âHave you thought about what you want to do for the new year?â The blonde asked, breaking the peaceful silence with a question that immediately had you stressing out.Â
âNo, I was just curious. I normally wouldnât have even been concerned with it, but finding you again definitely changed things.â
âYeah, well this last year has been hectic enough. Honestly Iâd be happy just spending New Yearâs here at home.âÂ
âUnderstood, cozy night in, maybe a drink or two to celebrate-â
âAs if you could ever celebrate something in a relaxed way. I think weâre both fully aware of what weâll be doing.âÂ
âWell I wasnât going to say that.â
âYou wouldâve eventually.â
âYou know me too well. I hate it.âÂ
He let out a soft chuckle, and placed a gentle kiss on your head. âMore than youâll ever know, love.â
