Ian Fleming’s debut novel, Casino Royale, was first published on 13 April 1953, introducing the world to James Bond.

Fleming had been an intelligence officer during WWII and stated that the novel was based on his “experience and imagination), but also thought the novel was a "dreadful oafish opus" and had no expectations for the book, which he completed in 1952 at the age of 44. The publishing house (Jonathan Cape) was not enthusiastic about the novel either, but published it at the urging of Fleming’s brother who was a well-known travel writer with Cape.

Casino Royale was an immediate hit in the UK, selling out of its first edition in less than a month, but was not popular in the US until the films began running in 1962. Casino Royale was not adapted for the screen until 1967 (the fifth Bond adaptation) and is considered one of the worst Bond films. It was remade in 2006 with Daniel Craig in his first appearance as James Bond (and the 21st bond film for Eon Productions, which had been given the rights to the film in a trade for Spider-Man) in an adaptation that is much closer to the original novel and is considered one of the best Bond films.

April 10th, 1912 - Southampton, England

On this day, RMS Titanic, White Star Line’s newest leviathan, departed from Southampton at noon. There were nine-hundred and twenty-two passengers aboard. A few minutes later, the Titanic nearly got into a collision with the SS City of New York, which was luckily avoided. Four hours later, she arrived in Cherbourg, France and picked up an additional two-hundred and seventy-four passengers while twenty-four disembarked.
