       the  trial  is  over  and   the  gates  have  closed,  locking  him  away  once  again  in  the  institute’s  darkened  hallways  until  the  next  time  the  entity  deems  fit  to  unleash  him  on  the  realm’s  inhabitants.   he’s  come  to  appreciate  the  silence,  the  calm  that  accompanies  the  fading  rush  of  adrenaline  through  wired  veins--  but  a  noise  catches  one  bandaged  ear,  and  only  then  does  he  realize  that  he’s  not  alone  after  all. 

       the  presence  is  not  altogether  unfamiliar,  nor  unwelcome ;  it  is  simply  unexpected,  and  without  the  entity’s  lust  for  blood  clouding  his  mind,  he’s  able  to  track  the  sound  of  boots  scuffing  purposefully  across  tiled  floors  back  to  his  office.  years  of  dust  collects  on  book - lined  shelves  and  the  large  cedar  desk  seated  at  an  angle,  where  he’s  left  the  facial  equipment  that  so  regularly  adorns  his  head,  twisting  already  gruesome  features  into  a  maniacal  grin  and  ever  vigilant  eye.  

       ‘  why  did  you  come  back?  ’   he  rasps,  imposing  frame  casting  a  long  shadow  from  the  doorway.    ‘  your  escape  was  nothing  short  of  a  struggle.  ’

@overindulges  /  i’m  always  on  the  run  from  the  addict  i’ve  become. 

     léry’s  decrepit  halls,  years  after  closing  their  doors,  have  welcomed  a  new  patient,  one  that  reeks  of  a  chemical  that  carter  can’t  readily  identify.   it’s  curious,  the  little  blue  vial,  clutched  in  what  he  can  only  imagine  are  hands  caught  shaking  from  nerves,  coated  with  a  thin  veneer  of  sweat.  the  small  rubber  stopper  proves  no  match,  its  contents  too  tempting  an  indulgence  as  the  intruder  takes  a  whiff  and  seemingly  steadies,  the  trembling  in  his  hands  and  ghostly  pallor  gradually  fading  and  giving  way  to  a  sense  of  alertness.  how  soon  that  would  change.  sparks  slither  across  filth - caked  tiles  as  he  makes  his  approach,  the  air  buzzing,  crackling  with  electricity,  and  the  high - pitched  giggle  that  bubbles  up  from  his  throat  cuts  through  the  silence  like  a  pristine  scalpel.  

      ‘  you  shouldn’t  be  here.  ’

pulled willingly into the realm of the entity powered by the idea of revenge.  without her father as an option  ,    it is acted out on the survivours.  over and over.  for as long as the entity keeps her here.  vengeance  /  anger overwhelming her during each trial.  but there are reminders of her father even here    ––– –    merciless killers.  murderers.  her pale – grey face  /  that rin finds she has little control over now  ,    the muscles warping and twisting into all the emotions she felt in those final moments.

but now  ,    the twisted frown that creases her forehead and leaves a snarl on her lips works quite well.  voice dragged over shattered glass  ,    a  soft yell  constantly echoing at the back of her throat.  or is it a scream  ?     ❛  i do not like what you do.  ❜

     he  understands  more  than  most  that  the  entity’s  grasp  is  a  powerful  one,  often  forcibly  adorned  with  garb  a  few  steps  short  of  sado - masochism.  this  instance  is  one  of  few  in  which  he’s  spared  the  electroshock  headpieces,  scarred  flesh  still  tender,  still  bloodied,  from  its  straining  hold.   the  brief  time  between  trials  is  allotted  almost  solely  for  replacing  the  bandages  tied  ‘round  his  head,  securing  wounds  left  after  what  he  could  liken  only  to  a  massive  craniotomy,  the  jagged,  punctured  mass  of  his  brain  bared  for  all  to  see.  

     heavily - lidded  eyes  consider  their  newest  addition  with  only  the  vaguest  interest,  thinly - sparsed  words  dragging  from  a  dry  throat.

    ‘  few  do,  though  i  suppose  the  same  could  be  said  for  you.  ’

     kate’s head is canted to get a good look at his features. he almost appeared flushed, & perhaps she got the tiniest kick out of it. the blonde twirls herself into his arms in a guiding motion, securing one around her and tossing her chin upwards. grin grows a tad mischievous, but ever so playful. she prided herself on being able to help people let loose. if a teacher she must become, a teacher she will become. 

        “ really now ? mister fancy - shmancy don’t got at least a little waltzin’ practice ? can’t believe th’ cowgirl a’ all people’s gotta whip you into shape. put one hand on my back. “

         he’s  nothing  if  not  compliant,  one  large  hand  coming  to  rest  on  the  slight  inward  curve  of  her  spine  with  a  faint  smile.  he’s  certain  that,  were  they  discovered,  the  other  survivors  might  question  if  this  was  the  best  use  of  their  time  --  but  if  he  learned  anything  from  his  time  in  residency,  it’s  that  the  most  traumatic  of  events  often  required  a  period  of  rest,  of  happy  distractions  to  counter  the  dread  that  lingers  on  the  horizon  and  threatens  to  consume.  instinctively,  he  draws  closer  until  their  bodies  are  nearly  flush  against  one  another.

      ‘ fancy? ’   he  repeats  with  amusement,  one  eyebrow  quirked.   ‘  do  i  really  give  off  that  impression?  ’

on carter’s survivor au:      –  he’s gravely serious when it comes to survival and utilizing everyone’s skills to benefit the team.  he’s altruistic to a fault, often running back into the fray to carry an incapacitated teammate through the exit gates  –  but only if it’s a viable, relatively safe option.       –  his unyielding rationality on certain decisions makes him somewhat unpopular amongst a few of the other survivors, and he’s taken part in numerous arguments about how something could have been done better, or how leaving someone behind was their only option.         –  he spends a great deal of time studying and learning from their previous trials, in an attempt to plan ahead for whatever awaits them in the next one.  these ideas are shared with the group, and while some are more cooperative than others, his frustration is aimed mostly at himself when something doesn’t go as he’d so meticulously envisioned.
