A key priority for UN Peacekeeping and the United Nations community is increasing the number of female uniformed and civilian personnel deployed to our missions. Our mission in South Sudan (United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS)) recently launched an initiative to connect female military peacekeepers from #Australia, #China, #Ethiopia, #Japan and #Nepal who are currently based in Juba. The network’s goal is to have female military peacekeepers share their experiences, learn from each and provide support. This environment reflects the women’s work in local communities. Women peacekeepers are able to connect and talk with local women “in a way they just cannot with our male counterparts,” noted UNMISS Military Gender Advisor, Major Bettina Stelzer. Local women will talk to female military peacekeepers about issues that directly impact them, such as gender-based violence, helping our troops to provide more protection. The number of women participating in UN Peacekeeping military deployments has slowly grown over the years from 1 per cent in 1992 to 3 per cent in 2014. As of December 2016, almost 3,000 women military personnel were serving in UN Peacekeeping missions, including MINUSCA,Mission des Nations Unies au Mali - MINUSMA, MONUSCO, UNMIL, Opération des Nations Unies en Côte d'Ivoire (ONUCI), AU - UN Mission in Darfur (UNAMID) and United Nations Support Office in Somalia - UNSOS.

Loved this little David Wojnarowicz, “Fear of Monkey/Evolution” (1988), in “Fast Forward” at the @whitneymuseum. Can’t wait for their Wojnarowicz retrospective next year! (at Whitney Museum of American Art)
