Time passed with Enid walking back and forth increasingly dusty and paint splattered as the number of notebook papers surrounding Wednesday increased. Noon came and went followed by Enid walking over to set a bottle of water down beside Wednesday. The werewolf set down with her own bottle. "You need to drink water."
"I do not want to risk spilling on any of my notes."
Enid rolled her eyes and took a drink then paused, eyes rolling back toward Wednesday. She swallowed hard and closed her the bottle as she cleared her throat. Looking around and taking a deep sniff of the air before she looked at Wednesday again. When she next spoke, she let her minimal wolf rise into her throat. "Wednesday."
The oracle froze and turned to face Enid eyes wide and attentive. Someone walking in on this scene would likely have read the expression as fear rising to terror, but Enid's nose was telling her a very different story and she was very much trying not to give any sign of what she was picking up from the oracle.
"Drink the water."
Wednesday met her gaze and looked down to the bottle of water. Then her eyes narrowed just slightly, still far wider than she normal held them. She set down her pen and notebook to pick up the bottle and open it up. She lifted it to her lips, watching Enid. The werewolf let a wordless growl rumble in her throat as she fixed Wednesday with her eyes. Enid wasn't sure but she thought Wednesday's pale skin was turning a deeper grey. Her heart beat was certainly getting faster.
The oracle took a drink of water, tilting her head to the side so she could keep her eyes meeting with Enid's while she emptied a third of the bottle in one pour. She lowered the bottle, taking a deep breath and capped the bottle.
Enid smiled and growled out "Good girl." and before she realized what she was doing, the werewolf reached out to pat Wednesday's head.
Her eyes widened and the blush became impossible to hide as she pulled her hand back from its place on top Wednesday's head. Wednesday composed herself and straightened posture as she continued staring at Enid, and realized the werewolf had done that very deliberately.
"Touché."
"Umm, what?" Enid asked, voice flowing back to its normal tones.
"I acknowledge the point." The oracle said, continuing to stare into Enid's increasingly flustered eyes. "And I shall prepare my counter."
Enid's eyebrows shot up in the center and pulling down at the outside points. Her mouth twitched into a... worried? anticipatory? ... nervous smile and a small trickle of laughter forced itself out as Wednesday's eyes narrowed into her normal intensity and a thin but broad smile slowly spread across her face.
Enid's phone started ringing and the werewolf reached into a pocket for it but refused to pull her eyes from Wednesday. "Uh, that's Rumi."
Wednesday nodded. "Best see what she wants." Then she shifted into Spanish. Slow, tonally flat, but sharp and deep words that flowed one to another like the sound of a knife cutting fabric. "I'll still be here when you come back."
"Okay, I don't speak Spanish." Enid said as she fumbled with her phone and stood up, Wednesday rising with her. "Hey, Rumi."
"I'll teach you words to peel skin from the soul." Wednesday continued in her dry, unexcited precise manner.
"Umm... its telenovela... yeah t...the, phone is...uh weird. What..." Enid cleared her throat.
"Challenge you to take hold of my dead black heart and char in the heat of your fury." Wednesday licked her lips in what she thought was a seductive manner.
"The subtitles aren't uh working, It... it... looks like a college lecture? Maybe a seminar?" Enid refused to break eye contact as she licked dry lips.
"Every profane and sacred utterance you can imagine will be laid at your feet." Her voice held all the energy of a morgue accountant and all the intensity of a black hole.
"What do you need me for?" Enid asked, reaching up to pull the bandana off her head. "Mmhmm. I'll be right there."
The phone disconnected and slipped out of Enid's hand as she tried to put it back into her pocket. Wednesday caught the phone, reached out, and eventually found the edge of Enid's jean pocket and... after three attempts, managed to get the phone into Enid's pocket. There was an extended moment of silence as they clutched onto the remaining momentum until Enid weakly said.
"Point."
Wednesday turned on her heel and returned to sitting at her studies and listened as Enid headed upstairs to change for courier work and heard the wolf mutter, bewildered. "What just happened?"
The thing that gets me about Celine is that she tries to be both a mother figure and a demon hunter, but she fails.
She tries to be a mother but fails because she can't love her daughter wholeheartedly, because Rumi is a demon and Celine is a demon hunter. She tries to be a demon hunter but fails because she can't kill a demon even when the demon is asking her to, because Rumi is her daughter and Celine is her mother.
hey since i saw your commission art on ao3 just wanted to let you know that its against ao3's tos to mention things you post there being commissioned/paid for due to ao3 being non-profit and it can get removed! you should edit out the commission mention to be safe
Hi anon!! I did check their TOS before posting first, and made sure to follow their guidelines (not mentioning it is a "paid" work, not advertising and putting commission links). In their TOS, there's a section that says "Because not all commissioned fanworks were created for pay, we do permit usage of the word "commission" as long as there is no indication that a monetary transaction was involved in the creation of the work." So I followed that! I'll still edit a few things in my latest author's note just to be sure. But thank u for the concern!! (And pls lmk if this is still not good) 🙏🙏
