End of Summer 2013 update
Hey everyone!
It's been a while since I've been able to blog...
A lot has happened in the last year! In addition to getting a new piece premiered in Nebraska by the outstanding Mezcolanza Reed Quintet and performing my Junior Recital at UTM, I have been busy as always with lots of composing, practicing, and studying for classes. Only one year of classes and one semester of student teaching till I get that Bachelor's degree!!
Anyways, I have a couple of updates for you:
First off, please feel free to follow me on soundcloud here: https://soundcloud.com/josh-spaulding-music
This is where I will be putting all of my new audio clips for my compositions. I'll also probably be posting more on my Youtube account as well (http://www.youtube.com/user/jdorsuhm). I'll be posting videos from my junior recital there as well here in the next couple of months.
Next, I would like to introduce you to my new website!
http://joshspauldingmusic.weebly.com/
This new site has given my old site a much needed facelift and also a better organization system that will make it so that my website won't freeze up or take forever to load if you are visiting!
Some other cool things are in store for the future... I am still in the process of putting together my debut CD project which will feature numerous commissioned works for solo marimba and vibraphone as well as a couple of my own percussion compositions! Stay tuned for more details on that!
Also, tentatively my senior recital is going to be in March 2014. I still don't know the date, but I will keep you guys updated!
Many more updates will be coming in the future! For now though, I thank you all for supporting my musical endeavors, and I am looking forward to what the future holds!
Other summer news...
In addition to the new website (http://joshspaulding.tk/), I have also been really busy so far this summer with several new projects and compositions!
The first of these projects is a CD of solo marimba and vibraphone literature that will consist of pieces by great upcoming composers like Lucas Garner and Molly Joyce commissioned by me, several of my own compositions, and a couple of other cool pieces! More details to come of that project soon! I hope to have the CD in stock ready to sell by the time I graduate from UT Martin!
I'm also starting to dig into some great percussion literature for the upcoming Nief Norf Summer Festival here in a few days! I will be playing in John Cage's 1st and 2nd Constructions, a cool looking bass drum duo by Gerard Grisey called "Stele", and Paul Lansky's new, cool quartet "Patterns" just to name a few... If you want more info on Nief Norf, check out their site here: http://www.niefnorf.org/
As my Junior year is just around the corner, I have begun doing some preparations for my Junior Recital at the University of TN Martin which will more than likely be in the Spring of 2013. I spent the last bit of the previous semester learning "Asventuras", an awesome snare drum solo by Alexej Gerassimez. If you haven't seen the work performed, definitely go give it a look! I honestly think it is one of the most creative and entertaining snare drum solos I have ever seen/heard! I just hope that I am able to play it at just a fraction of the superior skill that Gerassimez showcases when he plays it! As for the other lit. I'm looking at for the recital, I have several other cool pieces in mind including a drumset trio by Dr. Rande Sanderbeck of ETSU, a chamber trio for violin, marimba, and clarinet by Kevin Puts, a vibe solo by Ben Wahlund, and many more! More details to come!
Last but not least, I have many exciting composition projects (too many to list!) that I am getting to work on during this summer. Three of the biggest ones include my first commissioned work (yay!) for a low brass octet (4 tubas, 4 euphoniums) and rhythm section (piano, bass guitar, and drumset). I've called the work "Three Tones for Low Brass", and it will be a three movement work with very contrasting textures: a rock/funk opener, an ethereal jazz ballad movement, and a Salsa for the finale! (That last one should be interesting!) If all goes well, the whole thing should be finished this fall and it will be premiered this coming spring!
Another project worth mentioning is a collection of six short(ish), independant marimba "reflections" that I have been working on since my senior year of high school. I'm hoping to finish these for my aforementioned CD project.
Third, I am currently working on sketching out some ideas for a brass quintet for the Mirari Brass Quintet. I am very excited about how this project is going to turn out, and I will be giving more details on that one in the near future!
As always, thanks to all of you for your interest in my performances and compositions, and I hope you all will stay tuned and continue to follow my musical journeys and musings!
~ Josh
The new website is up!
Hey everyone! After finally getting some time to organize after a rather crazy semester, I am glad to finally present my new website! This site will now house all of my performance/composition news and it also features an online store to sell my self-published compositions! Please check it out and contact me if something doesn't work!

and so it begins...
Go figure... just a few months ago I never figured I would be a blogger. However with my recent experiences in performing and composition I have been inspired to open up the doors a little and share my experiences with you all! So, without further ado, I present the official blog of Josh Spaulding: The Music within My Soul!
