“Do you want to finish that sentence or am I going to die of anticipation?” Eros asked in a singsong voice as he sat in the tree nearby. Visiting the mortals had always made for a good story here and there, this one looked like she would entertain if he poked hard enough.
“Not particularly.” She answered without a look around her. Voices that appeared out of nowhere only meant one thing, a hindrance. “Though to perish without knowledge, that seems almost unfair to all. What a thought..” Cassandra rattled on, her mind racing with hundreds of thoughts, as it so often did. “To what do I owe the pleasure?” She asked, finally, barely turning after fingers drifted over the petals of a whatever bloom had taken residence in the area.
At the sound of someone else approaching, his hand moved instinctively to the hilt of his sword. Not that the danger was promised, but it was possible. Then he turned around, and dropped his hand once more to his side. She was beautiful, certainly, but there was more than that. Something a little off-putting. “Um.” He cleared his throat, watching the woman curiously. “The beginning of…what, exactly?”
“Do you often make it a habit to question those you eavesdrop on?” She asked, her voice like music, each word dripping with the sort of finesse that couldn’t be ignored. “The beginning of.. change.” She said finally. “Nothing you need to worry about.” She said, gesturing towards his sword. “That should be safe at your side, and will be.” Meaningless words to those who heard them, for every ‘vision’ she shared would be forever marred by the distrust weaved into her life. “What brings you here?”
Cassandra’s face slackening at his touch hurt him more than he was prepared to admit. He was hoping for a reaction but this absence of one was a resounding silent admonishment. Apollo’s face flushed and he removed his hand.
At her cryptic remark about the solstice his curiosity was piqued. While Apollo had the same access to foreknowledge that Cassandra did it was something he was not burdened by, it was a pool he could choose to drink from instead of a stream he was trapped in. One that he drank from sparingly, knowing that observing the future changed it. It was why Apollo used mortals to channel these glances, mortal interference with the future was much less dangerous than prophecy told directly by a god, which was much harder to divert.
Hand on hip Apollo questioned the slip of a girl, “Why so vague my dear, surely you’d appreciate divulging the details to one of the few beings who would actually consider believing you?”
Throughout her life, Cassandra had grown accustomed to being used for the needs of others. As a girl she had seen how childlike glee could shift aggression and cease the rage of even the mightiest warriors. To a young woman who had been taught a subtle shift of a gown could bring almost everything one desired. What she hadn’t ever, and still wouldn’t get used to, she refused to, was being a way to predict for those who could, if they wanted to, see the events that rested ahead. Instead of having the gift, she had the version no soul would ask for.
A version given to her by a man who was no more than a boy with a bruised ego. Words she would never utter out loud, much less think about, but being in his presence had the girl slightly off her game. Hearing the sickeningly sweet voice was different than imagining it during a bout of restlessness. There was no denying his power, even then, she felt the draw, one that had been, and still was hard to ignore. Yet it was substantially easier once fact set in. He had single handily changed her life forever due to rejection.
“Appreciate?” She repeated, almost laughing at the word. Oh how wrong he was. “I suppose one would appreciate your word choice.” With a shift of her dress, the brunette moved with ease, one hand guiding against the tree branches until nimble feet met the warm and soft dirt. “To offer the god of truth my insight would be but an insult, surely you are better off without my words.” She toyed, knowing better than anyone the ire that fiery hot man could bring, but aside from death, what was worse? Yet the chance to frighten the downfall to a man who not a single soul would listen to, not when her words were brought up, did cause a single turn in her behavior. “The beginning marks the end. To the veil we’ll enter..” Lofty words fell as she busied herself counting the flowers that grew alongside the wall.
“I should be going now.”
Achilles pulled his sword out of the freshly-slain body on the sand, the Trojan scout who thought he could infiltrate the Greek camps. As if Achilles and the Myrmidons would let that happen. He peered up into the darkness, hearing someone near the wall to Troy, murmuring to herself. “Come out, come out…” he called, sing-song and cocky. “My sword is hungry for more blood.” He paused in his tracks when he saw it was a slim woman, but didn’t lower his weapon. She could still be a spy.
“You won’t be needing that.” She spoke down to the warrior, clearly not too surprised to see him there. The whispers of the whipped around so often it was hard to go anywhere without hearing of the many, many accolades. “Today isn’t the day.” Any of her sisters would’ve turned and ran faster than Hermes could travel within a blink of an eye, his presence would only instill fear in those who didn’t know better. Without giving him anymore mind, the princess fell back into her turns, humming her mantra as if it was the most alluring of tunes.
Apollo’s eyes roved lasciviously over the girls thinly clad body, he felt the same stirrings that had devolved their relationship to this bitter toxic place. He noted her body stiffen as she addressed him, not even the hint of a bow.
A mixture of rage and lust seethed within him, it was this kind of plucky rebellion that had attracted him to the girl, her strength was commendable he knew Artemis would approve of her. At Cassandra’s feigned nonsensical excuse to leave his ability to see through the half truth showed him where she was off to.
“Tsk, tsk, Cassandra, you’re not lying to your God of Truth now are you, surely you would know better” Walking up to her he held he loomed over the small mortal, looking down at her he chided “I mean you wouldn’t want to risk the ire of a God now would you?” He reached out an index finger to lift her chin trying to get eye contact.
Rudeness had never been a trait embraced by the princess, to her it was an easy way of avoiding what could be sidestepped with little to no interaction. It wasn’t as if every moment had to have a reaction or the drama that would surely follow. Not even a few minutes in front of the god and the girl was ready to turn and go. If only.
“Lying?” She repeated the world. Lying. Only a fool would attempt to pull the wool over such a being's eyes. “Of course not. Wounding the ego of any man would.. dampen my mood considerably. Yours.. even more so.” She danced around the conversation, for what punishment could be struck down next? Not that she had the focus to think of anything or how being around him truly made her feel. The madness that tinged her life and thoughts tripled at the brief touch. Yet instead of giving into the predictable and pulling away, Cassandra pulled off an even more wounding move. Indifference. Holding back would deny Apollo everything and then some. “Of course not. Which is why I should let you be on your way. This winter solstice isn’t one to be missed.” She hinted vaguely.
Apollo smirked as he watched Cassandra from the top of the wall, the girl obviously talking to herself. The curse he laid was obviously taking it’s toll on her sanity. He watched over her from time to time, a great believer in admiring his own handiwork. Jumping down as she walked below him, he leaned against the wall nonchalantly, “What is it you were saying my love” He cocked an eyebrow, hoping to irritate the seeress.
The prickled hairs upon the back of her neck had been enough of a hint for Cassandra to know something was to come. A small sign of sorts, a sign she appreciated given the company that soon joined her. Apollo. That voice alone was like a hot blade. One that stung no matter how hard it was ignored. “Nothing.” She stated matter of factly, stirring the thin layers of her gown to shift as she did. She avoided any chance of their gazes meeting and ignored the usual customs in favor of a swift dip of her head to count for a hint of respect while in his presence. “If you’ll excuse me. I have the water ripples to take note of.” Her blood boiled inside, and the urge to snap heightened tenfold, but the princess knew better. Thankfully.
“Speaking to yourself is the first sign of madness” Aphrodite interrupted the young woman, not minding that she was clearly deep in thought and she may not want to be disturbed. She enjoyed walking through the cities in a mortal form on the odd occasion she didn’t want to burst through and demand worship, however infrequently that was. “What do they mark the beginning of though? You have my curiosity now.”
“Is madness something to be swayed by?” The girl questioned with a subtle raise of the brow as her head dipped as respectfully as she could force herself. Though she had issue with them as a whole, Cassandra knew the importance of respect. She cringed at the words, the request, the push for more and it was then the lickings of the vision she’d had came back. Forcing her eyes to meet the goddesses for the first time. “The end.” She spoke, her tone taking on a thicker tone before a blink of both eyes had her snapping to. “Looking towards the festivities, are you?” It was as if nothing had changed, the conversation, to Cassandra, seemed smooth and on course. It was always the first few minutes that got her after a peek. At times they were harder to deal then the full vision. In reality it was more than that. There was no chance of the love goddess believing her, no one could. And so it was with a quick smile that Cassandra turned to begin back.
“To beginnings, then. Waiting for me?” Hades chuckled. The irony was to good to go unnoticed. “That’s certainly a first time I’ve heard that from a mortal. I’m flattered. Though I suppose for the sake of the fragile egos of the other divines here you do mean waiting for all of us?” He held out his arm for her, half hoping she’d take it, the other half hoping she was scared to. “Shall we then?”
“Some of us know better than to fear.. certain things, death amongst them.” It was a bold remark, but one she carried without sarcasm. When one could see how things would go, the end wasn’t all that scary. “But of course.” Wounded egos.. they were at the bottom of her list of things to care about. They were fickle and far too easily offended, and playing fair had never been on their list of important points. “So we shall. It’s only for a day.” The last words fell, already forgotten as her hand fell in favor of his hand. “I always forget to take a breath right before and I regret it each and every time..”
“Beginning of the what, pray tell?” Hades asked as he spotted Cassandra walking along. “It must have been a pretty interesting though it if it’s enough to distract you from the divine beauty of the gods of Olympus.” He kept his tone as sarcastic as possible to be sure his contempt wasn’t lost on the girl. “Do you need to be escorted in?”
“-- Everything.” She replied cryptically, knowing the man before even having to turn. The voice was too familiar but new all at the same time. Without answering Cassandra laughed. It was hard to hide her distaste, and harder to find others that understood what it entailed. Even if said being was a god himself. A god, who like all the others, confused her to no end. “It’s why I’m here. Waiting for you.” Her hand dipped down, expecting the others to offer assitance for some reason. There wasn’t a need for a vision when intuition did just fine.
“Celebrations that mark the beginning of the..” The girl spoke to herself, wandering along the city wall, one foot in front of the other. One. Two. Three. Step. It was the mantra in her head. The only thoughts to be allowed. For even she knew it wouldn’t do to dwell.
{{ CHARACTER INFORMATION }}
NAME: Cassandra
TITLE: Princess of Troy - Seeress
PARENTS: King Priam and Queen Hecuba
PLACE OF BIRTH:
Troy. The city was once a place she held dear, but when the curse was set and her visions never believed, Cassandra began to dread the people and the events that were soon to come. With nothing she could do, she bided her time until she was able to see her truth. No longer does she hold a love for it, but instead can appreciate it for what it was. The start.
CONSORT: None.
HOME: Cassandra spent the rest of her time in Mycenae.
{{ POWERS }}
POWERS:
Precognition: Cassandra’s ‘gift’ from Apollo allows her to see into the future and gain knowledge and information of what has yet to happen. They come quickly, the visions, hitting her and her body hard. Visions appear and take her over completely, causing her to enter a trance-like state that is impossible to disturb. Unlike some of those gifted with the sight, Cassandra has never experience the ‘dream like’ aspect that some speak of. Her visions are too real, so vivid in description one has to marvel at the intricacy. There is no way to bring them on that she had found, but she hopes there is more to this ‘gift’ than meets the eye.
Enhanced Agility:
Enhanced Charisma - In part to her role as a Princess, Cassandra was raised to understand the importance of charm and interest. It came easily to the girl who could go for hours, talking and listening, gaining someone’s. Trust that remained.. until her visions were brought into the mix.
BLESSING: ( Explain briefly one myth that demonstrates your character using their gifts for the benefit of others. As a God this can be blessing a mortal, as a Mythic Mortal this can be a heroic act etc. )
CURSE: She learned rejecting a god will come with cruel consequences. What could have been an enviable ‘gift’ was made into the bane of her existences. The privilege of seeing the future is marred knowing at the same time there is nothing to change it. What will be will... simply be.
{{ SACRED CONNECTIONS }}
SACRED ANIMALS: The serpent. Cassandra sees the beauty in an often unappreciated and feared reptile. They find her easily and their movements offer a hypnotic image to admire while losing herself in thought.
SACRED CITIES: Cassandra holds no city close, as they all in one way or another simply hold bad memories. However given the chance to enjoy a walk around a restored Troy one last time, she would.
SACRED PLANTS: Hyacinth have always been favored by Cassandra for its simple beauty and heady scent.
SACRED GEMSTONES: Gemstones are not something of an interest to Cassandra, but she has always appreciated the beauty in opal and emeralds.
SACRED ITEMS: Two thin gold bracelets, gifts from her mother and father upon maturity. As well as singular laurel leaf. The latter is a reminder of times spent careless losing herself with her siblings before everything was to change.
kashilascorner:
Greek Mythology: Cassandra of Troy. The daughter of Priam and Hecuba who foresaw the fall of Troy, though no one ever listened to her.
Cassandra they scream your name now it echoes off the walls of burning ilium they are screaming themselves hoarse with it
Cassandra they plead now in cracking voices it echoes in your head, voices overlapping, begging your forgiveness they are bleeding themselves dry for you
Cassandra they are screaming, they are pleading, the people of proud ilium but you have had your fill of echoes and you do not care to ease their minds
