Urgh Fitz!

Her lips pressed together in thought for a moment, trying to find the right response. Her current relationship with SHIELD was complicated, at best. It had nothing to do with Simmons, or anyone else on the team, but it didn’t feel like where she needed to be right now. Right now, she needed to do whatever needed to be done to not only find Kate, but protect inhumans as well. Unfortunately, that meant doing things that she just couldn’t do right now as a SHIELD agent. Finally, she gave her friend a nod. “Yeah, actually.. I have stitches that opened and you’re honestly so much better with them than the horror show I’d do trying to fix them myself.” She reasoned, not wanting her to leave yet but knowing she couldn’t fairly get Jemma too involved, not without asking her to compromise herself as an agent.

Jemma was relieved when Skye gave her something to do, she had felt a little foolish for turning up unannounced but the fact that Skye had wounds that needed suturing meant that it wasn’t a wasted trip. “Of course,” she said as she jumped up, picking up her bag from the ground and opening it to get the first aid kit that rested inside, Jemma was always prepared, she had been a girl guide growing up after all. She waited for Skye to show her what needed to be done and situate herself so Jemma could do her work. “You know that we’re still here for you right?” she said, wanting Skye to know that the lack of Shield affiliation didn’t affect their relationship. “Fitz and me, the rest of the team, we care.”

“Of course.” With a wink and a nod he raced out of the building, returning moments later with her sandwich. “Here you are.”

She was surprised to hear him agree and minutes later he was back clutching her sandwich, “that is very impressive, I could get used to having your around.”

Just the Two of Us || Fitzsimmons

Mack was everything he wasn’t, for most of everything, but obviously they couldn’t be different physically and yet, they connected easily enough. He had been the only one around that didn’t treated him like he was broken and took time to make him feel normal. He also liked the fact that he gave him a nickname that wasn’t a lame one like the ones he was used to growing up as a genius, But Mack was dead and maybe the others were too by now. He was no fool, that was a possibility, the worst case scenario but he had to hope for the best. He had to believe there was still hope, like he did with Jemma all this years. Slowly rubbing the back of her hand with his thumb as it lingered on his as he let his tea cool down a bit, he surely didn’t mind it as they indeed already had on multiple occasions, hold hands before and it wasn’t that much of a display since it was subtle. Yeah, they still had some details to work out about that part of their relationship but right now, it felt like the right thing to do, regardless of what the others may say or think about it. “Mine too, I’d wish I could just switch it off.” he said almost bitterly. Turning his head towar her as she asked him if he wouldn’t mind staying over with her, he nodded. “Sure. Always dreamt to be your personal pillow.” he tried to joke to ease her a bit.

Jemma found herself wondering if going into the field was such a good idea after all, she’d pushed Fitz into it, convinced him that it was an opportunity that they couldn’t turn down and now it just seemed like it was causing them problem and after problem. If they’d stayed in the lab then Jemma would have never faced death and risked her life jumping from an airplane, Fitz never would have chosen her life over his and suffered a brain injury as a result and Jemma wouldn’t spend most of her days worrying about Skye because she never would have met her. Life would’ve been simpler if they’d stayed in the lab that much Jemma knew for sure but she also knew that being on the team had not been all bad, not at all.

Her eyes darted to their hands for the moment, feeling a little more calm as his finger moved across the back of her hand, Fitz always had that affect on her and the little moment of affection meant so much to her. She nodded as he mentioned switching his mind off and she sipped a bit of her tea as a distraction more than anything else. Truth be told Jemma had multiple pills in her cabinet that could do exactly that, switch off her brain for a few hours and it was getting harder and harder to resist the temptation, to just make it all stop for a night. She smiled and turned towards him slightly as he joked and she gave him a little nudge with her shoulder after checking that he wasn’t holding his tea. “It’s most men’s wish,” she joked back with a little smirk.

Why couldn’t he just jump in the Tardis, go back and time and fix all this ? Or take a Time Turner, get his hands on a freaking DeLorean or a timetravelling spaceship ? Silly questions of course, as far as science had reached today, time travel was still very much only sci-fi material but right now he wished so hard it wasn’t. It felt like they were trapped in a time loop and back to square one with Skye gone and the team divided. He still hadn’t fully accepted Mack’s loss and now this. No wonder he’d burried himself in his workshop in order to avoid just loosing it completely. Fortunately for him, one constant remained: Jemma. He was glad that they were back to almost complete normal behavior between them, as far as work was concerned since for the rest, everything changed, for the better. Leaving his bench when he saw on his watch that it was already 10:32. He headed straight for the kitchen and smiled for a second as he caught sight of her figure. Reaching out to his cup, he sat next to her. “Thanks.” He knew he didn’t have to thank her for it, it was somehow part of their rituals, dating from their Academy days but he also knew she was barely holding up too. “Did you manage to sleep this time ?” he asked, out of concern for her but he didn’t get much of it himself to be honest. Too many things on his mind right now for that.

Jemma knew that Mack hadn’t exactly been the biggest supporter of her connection to Fitz but his loss had still hit her hard, he had been there for Fitz when she’d been unable to, he’d rebuilt the man that Jemma had left behind. Skye was that for Jemma, sure she hadn’t been broken in the way that Fitz had but Skye had been there when Jemma had been unable to lean on Fitz. Now they were both on their own, but at the same time not really. In the last ten years Jemma hadn’t felt lonely very often, Fitz had always been there, even at times when she had thought she wanted to be alone, he always knew better. In fact, she could only recall one time where she’d been truly lonely, a loneliness that had lasted longer than a day or two, when she’d been undercover at Hydra.

She smiled as he thanked her for the tea but she didn’t say anything, feeling that it was pointless to say your welcome because he already knew it. Jemma would make him tea twenty times a day if he wanted it, one because she liked tea and two because she liked the look on his face when he accepted it. Her hand moved to linger on top of his that sat between them, she wasn’t sure where they stood in terms of public displays of affection but she also knew that holding hands wasn’t exactly a new thing for them. “A little, but my mind just keeps working, trying to figure out a way to kind them,” she said speaking of the missing Avengers as well as Skye. “Can you stay tonight?” she asked, looking up at him earnestly, she felt ridiculous but she was sure that she’d sleep better if he was next to her.

Just the Two of Us || Fitzsimmons

It felt like they’d gone back on time, Skye was gone again and it seemed like the whole team was falling apart. They’d lost most of the original members and at this point it seemed like the only person that Jemma could really depend on was Fitz which was why she was in the kitchen preparing  two cups of a tea and a selection of biscuits, she knew that Fitz would be arriving for his 10.35 tea break any moment. Ever since they’d become more than friends Jemma had been doing her best to keep the work relationship the same whilst everything else changed. They’d always been best friends and nothing was going to change that, Jemma wouldn’t let it, they’d been through too much already. So she readied the two cups, putting the extra splash of milk into Fitz’s and extra biscuits onto his coaster. 

She’d lost count of how many cups of tea she’d made for Fitz during their friendship, it was what she did whenever someone needed cheering up, her mother had always told her that tea could work miracles and sometimes she started to believe it. Today wasn’t cheering up tea though, it was conversation tea, it was missing Skye tea. Her mind flashed back to the last time that Skye had been MIA, Jemma had gone crazy with worry, using every last trick she had to try and find the girl who had become her sister. Now was different, Skye had gone away on her own but that didn’t stop Jemma from missing her, the last time Skye had gone missing Jemma had clung onto Fitz for dear life and it seemed like she was doing it again.

Henry didn’t really have many choices, but still, the thought of being around people and hurting them….he just couldn’t do it. “I can’t. I’m sorry, I’m just….I got to go before anyone gets hurt.” Finally he managed to turn and run. He felt bad for just leaving her but the longer he stood there in the open, the better chance he had to be spotted and as nice a person as Jemma was, he couldn’t just go with her to this SHIELD. No one could help him. He was on his own.

She was disappointed when he decided that he was better off not getting help. She knew that SHIELD was the right way to help him. She wanted to give him her card, let him have her number if he needed it but before she could say anything he had started running in the opposite direction, there was no more that she could do.

“I don’t know. I…I would like to think that he would. I could only wish that he loved me so much.” Sjofn shook her head again. “I logically know that it’s not just my fault, but…It feels like it is. And I know that my guilt doesn’t bring him back…”

“I understand, sometimes it feels like your brain and your heart are disagreeing, though of course it’s all in your brain,” Jemma said, not allowing herself to be completely scientifically inaccurate.

Sjofn shook her head, sniffling her tears back. “He…I shouldn’t have even been there. I had no business thinking that I’d be able to be useful in that battle.”

Jemma was worried about speaking out of turn but it seemed the only card that she had left to pay, “do you think he regrets it? Because from what you’ve told me it seems like he would make that choice over and over again. I doubt he’d want you wasting your life blaming yourself.”

“Sounds perfect.”

“I want to believe you…..I just……….”

“In all honesty, what other choices do you have? If you come to SHIELD and change your mind you will be welcome to leave at any time, I promise. You can trust me, I’m a genius remember”

There was part of him that wanted ot trust her, but he just douldn’t bring himself. He didn’t want to hurt people. “I can’t…” he said, slowly backing away. “ can’t be near people.”

“So……I’m an Inhuman?”

“Ah, no. Inhuman refers more directly to a group of powered people whose powers are a result of something specific that I’m not sure I’m allowed to disclose, your sister and you got yours from the scepter, I don’t know if there is a word for that.”

“My friend…He…We were in battle, and this thing was possessing our friend and he moved in to take the hit instead of letting it kill me.” Sjofn tried to clarify. “My friend, Fandral…He.. I loved him. He was the only person I’ve ever been in love with and I managed to get him killed.”

“It sounds like he loved you very much too,” Jemma answered though not entirely sure that that was helping, “he chose to sacrifice his life for you, you had no control in that, you didn’t get him killed.” It was a hard concept for her to explain but she hoped the other girl would understand.

So there were more people like this? What the hell was happening to New York? this was all too weird. This was crazy. “You do realize this is all weird, right? I mean, you’re talking like this is a normal thing! This is not normal!”

“I apologize, I have a tendency to do that. I’ve had plenty of time to come to terms with the idea, but I must admit it put me on edge originally too.” She continued to speak with a soft voice, hoping it would calm him somehow. “I’m not usually the one who does the talking, there are people at SHIELD far better at explaining this than me.”
