The love/hate relationship with naptime as a disabled person could fuel the galaxy for millennia
anyway, Thought Of The Night:
when i was 6, i started experiencing back pain. said it hurt, kept suggesting a doctor.
no one listened.
by the age of 13, i should have been tested for scoliosis.
the school fucked up, and i wasnt.
at the age of 14, i went to the doctor for a bad back.
she looked at me, looked at how criminally large my breasts where, how fat i had become due to inability to exercise properly.
looked at my back. said i might get scoliosis if this kept up. do these exercises, youll be fine.
sent me home.
at the age of 15, i walked around New Orleans for a week in flats. gave myself tendonitis and plantar faasciatis.
no referrerals to a proper PT specialist. no rx drugs that might help. just...
here, do these at home exercises.
by the age of 16, i was having stomach pain every day from acid caused by my OTC drug use.
the stuff i used to mitigate the pain.
the doctor gave me what was essentially topical Ibuprofen. told me i couldn't injest painkillers anymore.
i was 20 by the time i saw a doctor and got my diagnoses. i was 20 before i knew i had fibro and scoliosis. i was 20 before i knew that drugs that weren't narcotics or OTCs that messed with my stomach existed, that i should use a cane, that i might need a wheelchair some days.
kids don't say "I'm in pain" over and over and over for attention. they don't fake being hurt in a chronic way.
i feel like everything i went through was preventable. i feel like i might be abled had i had proper care and treatment.
parents, caregivers, loved ones of children:
When a kid says they're in pain, please listen.
if abled people wanna use mobility aids i think thats fine and good actually.
Like, don’t wear disability as a costume, don’t buy up the good and cheap mobility aids that people who actually need them should have access to (or buy them and redistribute them for free/at cost if u want). And don’t use finite resources like electric grocery carts unless you need to.
but if you just like having a cane with you? go ahead. they can be great stim toys, look cute, and serve as a weapon. hell, some people use them to get stuff off of high shelves. thats rly cool if you just want the option not to walk sometimes? by all means, get a wheelchair. Want extra storage and a place to lean/sit while walking? a rotator/walker with bags might be great for you! Plus like, you’ll probably be disabled one day if you live long enough. already having familiarity with mobility aids might make a huge difference with how well you transition into your disability. I’m just one person, i can’t speak for all disabled people. some folks might disagree. but at the end of the day, theres more than one reason a mobility aid or accessibility device can be good for someone, and if you want to/do use them for a reason other than physical disability, i think thats fine and good.
this shouldn’t have to be said but if someone who struggles with cognitive issues such as fibro fog, autism or adhd etc has difficulty speaking or getting their point across, do not point it out. im talking about stuttering, misremembering words and definitions, using the wrong words in place of other ones, mixing up words or merging them together. you are allowed to help us find the right word but wait for us to ask first and give us a chance to find it ourselves. blurting out random words causes a lot more confusion for us and we often end up losing our train of thought.
also, in a similar vein, we may pause to think about what we’re going to say next, and it’s important that you not interrupt. for me, my train of thought is already on the verge of derailing. if i stop talking mid-sentence, give me a second to find my words and sort out my jumbled mess of a brain. don’t start speaking like we’ve finished our sentence and please don’t just abandon the conversation. it’s very frustrating, especially when you make jokes or tease us for forgetting words or misspeaking and it makes it much harder for us to get to our point. and tbh it’s embarrassing and it sucks because our brains aren’t doing what we want or need them to do and we don’t need a reminder every time it happens.
like the jokes might seem harmless or lighthearted but it hurts nonetheless because we are constantly in a struggle against our own brains. it seems like it should be such an obvious thing, not to tease or make fun of someone with cognitive issues, but so many people do it, including some of you who don’t think you do— particularly if you don’t think the reason behind it is a disability. it’s not the same as joking about your friend making a typo in the group chat. those are minor slip-ups and they happen to everyone. for a lot of us, they’re constant. we’re almost always trying to get our brains to work with us rather than against us and pointing it out only makes it that much harder to concentrate on actually articulating our thoughts instead of focusing purely on avoiding misspeaking so you won’t point it out again. obviously this will vary from person to person, not everyone with these symptoms feels the same way i do, but i think it’s a good rule of thumb to just. not interrupt and/or draw unnecessary/unwanted attention to our speech problems. i don’t think it’s too much to ask.
I would argue that even the "typo in the groupchat" deserves nuance.
I'm not dyslexic, but my brother is, and he makes what seems like typos all the time in messages and emails and essays. A typo once in a while in a group chat might be funny, but if it's constant typos, maybe stop and think about if they're not typos but the result of dyslexia. I have a stutter and brain fog and it's horrible when people make fun of me for it. Dyslexia can present itself online because of the text format of everything, and it can be extremely easy for dyslexic people to feel alienated and humiliated because of their genuine misspellings and not "typos".
It hurts me just to think and I don’t do pain
It’s okay if you as a disabled person are not independent. It’s okay if you need help doing even the most “basic” of tasks. You’re not less of a person, or less worthy for it. You are not any less lovable, and you certainly are not a burden.
It’s absolutely vile that there are people who believe no longer needing help is the absolute goal of living with or treating a disability. Independence isn’t the goal. Happiness is, quality of life is, being able to enjoy things day to day is. If you need a helping hand to get there, that is more than alright.

people acting like accessibility tools are an inconvenience to them and would rather they not exist are annoying little shits. no, the captions aren’t ruining the movie. no, that ramp isn’t making your life harder because you have to go to the side entrance. abled people are so entitled to think that other peoples accessibility is a nuisance, especially considering disabled people rarely get the same kind of access abled people get automatically. equity is not oppression of the privileged
Standing while cooking hurts, so I've been using my legs to push a spinney chair and it is so much fun to be able to not dread cooking just cause my chronic illness is acting up

Why don’t some of these CC creators just go to Second Life or Daz3D to make money, like geez. Daz3D brings in money and can be a stable career or extra income.
Or are they just too afraid their custom content, which apparently the game can’t exist without, isn’t good enough for people to outright buy instead of pledging donations.
What’s interesting is some of them probably did come from Second Life, or IMVU, or some other 3d site, but they were probably copybotting, and/or reselling other people’s meshes, got in trouble, and left to find some other gullible group of people to look the other way for a few pieces of converted kitchen clutter.
I don’t know how many times I’ve seen eaxis content and cc from The Sims 3 on the SL Marketplace, for like 60 Lindens, these people’s only interest is money.
Yep a lot of these ppl came from second life and brought the shitty rise and grind LinkedIn attitude with them. Second life banned gacha in 2021 and a lot of modellers and “brands” moved here bc they couldn’t exploit people through gambling (literally what the gacha system was) or exorbitant prices on fat packs m. Any time you see some tier system that looks like a tax form, please know it’s some freak from sl that gets off on these weird games instead of selling honestly and directly.
The system here is easier to exploit people bc you don’t have to put up money for a store, rig for multiple bodies, have money to participate in events, learn caspervend or make demos for how many bodies. You put out a pretty render and it’ll look like dogshit in game or pop at the seams when you put it on a sim that’s not a twig
The copybotters that come here can’t go on sl bc they’ve been run out or can’t make money on sl anymore. A few came here when patreon just started and it’s why a lot of stuff is in adfly hell. Please look up what happened to Leo on plurk or google Leo second life and see the old tumblr posts where sl ppl are arguing with her for her stealing shit and calling it hers lmao
A lot of these luxury weirdos on instagram are ppl I legit think who got priced out of sl (their currency is worth less than linden 💀) . It’s the same “gaming is a luxury “ “you’re all poor” attitude I see from these goofies
still trying to figure out drawing again. heeeeeere's johnny. 👽
i am begging you all to stop treating this site like instagram if you dont want it to be content free by next year
actually i'm reblogging this again with commentary, fuck it.
There's people in the notes talking about "not basing your worth off numbers", and like. that isn't what this post is about. It's not a threat, either, it's a comment on how this site works, at a mechanical level.
Likes are worthless. Let me say that again.
Likes. Are. Worthless.
They don't do anything. They're a bookmark. They were never part of how tumblr works - in the early days we didn't even have a like button, and the site still more or less acts as though we don't. They're personal bookmarks and the only people who "get" anything from them are you (you bookmark the post) and the OP (maybe a very slight serotonin boost), but they don't keep the post in circulation, they don't keep it alive.
Without reblogs, a post will be dead in the water within an hour. No matter how good it is, no matter how many hours of painstaking love and attention its creator put into it, it will be dead within an hour and never seen again. It gets pushed down the dashboard and nobody aside from the followers who were online when it was posted will see it. And there's a huge difference in engagement on posts that get even one lucky reblog from someone with wider reach - that one reblog shows your post to five, ten, fifteen other people, and if one of those people also reblogs it, and so on and so forth, that's how posts stay alive and in circulation. It's like a contagion, but we're sharing creativity instead of disease.
And that matters. That "lifespan" of the post matters, artists and writers give up on this site and go to sites where posts have longer lifespans because it sucks to spend hours of your life, maybe even days, to get two notes and some fucking pocket lint for your efforts. We create for ourselves, but we share because we want people to see it, because that engagement offers positive feedback and encouragement to continue. But more than that, if every post (whether art, fic, gifset, whatever) is dying within an hour or a day of being posted, that means it's not making it onto your dashboard. And if it's not on your dashboard, you won't see it. This kills the site, after a while. You stop seeing the posts, because nobody is putting them on your dashboard, because this site doesn't have an algorithm like twitter and insta's and it shouldn't, it's the last bastion of chronological timelines.
Forgive my giant fucking rant I am so tired right now and full of the plague but like stop acting like artists and writers are just being whiny little babies, or "threatening" to withhold our fucking work (you're not entitled to it! it's ours! if we get nothing out of sharing it we're well within our rights to keep it private!) when we say this site will dry up without reblogs. We're just stating facts.
also I’ve seen some people in the tags say ‘oh there have always been more likes on posts’ no there haven’t ????
these are posts from 2013, look at the ratio
not to sound like a nursing home resident but back then people know that the point of this site was to reblog things and share them, not to bury them away among your other 23k liked posts
Likes are just to haunt yourself. You read a post and get to the bottom only to discover you’ve been here before.
